Graded Unit - Research
When Solitude became an important theme in the poems I decided to research how to photograph soitude, and found this site...Â
https://www.stockvault.net/blog/photography/30-beautiful-solitude-themed-photographs/
Here are some of the images that inspired me
Graded Unit - Research
hen researching for this project, I came across a few photographers whose work inspired me to come up with my own idea. Among these photographers were Florian Imgrund who created the following analog double exposuresâŠ
(http://www.thisiscolossal.com/2012/03/double-exposure-photographs-by-florian-imgrund/)
 And Andre De FreitasâŠ
(http://twistedsifter.com/2012/06/double-exposures-by-andre-de-freitas-megatherium/)
I think these are stunning examples of double exposure photography and I hope to create images that are just as visually compelling and unique as the ones above.
Blue and B
The background of these images are simply things that are blue, for obvious reasons
âDeaf feels wonderful Like my favourite colour blue.â
 - Alex Goacher, Meridian Primary SchoolÂ
Look and E (Eye)Â
Again, the background of this one is a macro shot of an eye for obvious reasonsÂ
âListen, not with your ears but with your eyesâ
- Sandra L. Brooks, Silent Hands
Flame and F
âHands flickering like zipposâ
- Raymond Luczak - Mannequins (http://www.lambdaliterary.org/reviews/poetry/)Â
Flower and F
These images are deliberately a lot softer because flowers are softÂ
âI ran down the hill of ever blooming flowers When I enjoyed living in the world of blissful silenceâÂ
- Seeing Voices, Ffion Mary Hare School, Year 12
 River and R
âThe ringing in your ears turned into a flooding riverâÂ
- Raymond Luczak - CounterpointÂ

Silence and S
Silence was obviously a common word that came up in many of the poems that I looked at during my research process. I chose the trees and the water as a background because I find this atmosphere very relaxing and serene, like silence
Solitude and S
Soltude was another theme in most of the poems, both the pillar and the life ring were standing alone and I thought that they represented solitude wellÂ
Move and M
This one is a little bit different, the backgrounds are images that I took with longer exposures and neutral density filters to create movement within the photograph
âAnd I wish that I could tell them Of the music that I see In the buds of spring unfolding And the moving melody In the motion all about it In the birds and in the flowers In the happy eyes of children As they look their love in oursâ
- J Schuyler Long
Sky and S
this one speaks for itselfÂ
âThe answer might be far up in the skyâÂ
from a poem called âWhy Am I DeafâÂ
- Archie Nancarrow, Alun School, Year 8Â
Tree and T
again this one speaks for itselfÂ
âAll is quiet like the treesâÂ
- Amy Loizou, Invicta Grammar School, Year 7
Another step by step of how an image was createdÂ
Process of creating one of the digital double exposures, step by step. Ended up scrapping this one. The lines were supposed to represent the hands moving down and out because thatâs the way the hands move when signing the word âsilenceâ but it didnât look as good as it had in my headÂ
Notes for my project that probably don't mean a lot to anyone else except me, and jotted down quickly so a bit messy and all over the place
Here are some more websites that I used to help me find poems written by deaf people about being deafÂ
http://deafworldministries.com/deafpoetry.html
https://www.signbsl.com/
At first, I struggled with this idea and how I could do this topic justice, so Jim put me in touch with a student he knows whose little cousin is deaf. Â She gave me a few pointers and got in touch with her cousin for me, and her cousin suggested that I base the project on poems that were written by deaf people. I thought this was an excellent idea, so I started to research poems straight away. She suggested that I use the website lifeanddeaf.co.uk. This website among others helped me to pull phrases and common words from poems, which helped me to get started on the project.

These are the images I started out with for my graded unit, but when I showed them to my guidance lecturer, he told me that these were a good start but he needed more. He explained that I hadnât given my project a real purpose. Iâd made it clear what I was going to do and how I was going to do it, but there was no clear direction or purpose to my idea. He made the suggestion that I should consider using sign language to convey messages in my photographs, and that these could be used as a campaign to raise awareness for deafness and encourage people to learn sign language. This gave my project a purpose.
Graded Unit contact sheets....
Lighting practice with nicole today. Was testing out what camera settings to use in order to capture movement like i will be doing with the ribbons in my final shoots
Definitely not cut out to be in front of the camera đ
Graded Unit - Step By Step
For the first few attempts at my graded unit images, I used the following technique...Â
1. Open image of hand in camera raw, sharpen and adjust clarity/vibrance etc where needed
2. Open image in photoshop and use magic wand tool to select the handÂ
3. use select and mask option, set radius to 2 and set output to ânew layer with layer maskâÂ
4. Create a new layer between the background and the layer/layer mask and fill with whiteÂ
5. Open the background image, drag onto hand photo, make sure that the background photo becomes the top layerÂ
6. With the background layer still selected, press and hold control and select the mask below, the marching ants will appearÂ
7. Add vector maskÂ
8. Unlink the mask and the background photo in order to move the background image around freely within the hand shapeÂ
9. Move the second layer to the top, desaturate (optional but in this case looks better because of the black and white background) and select âscreenâ in blend modesÂ
10. Image > Adjustments > Levels, move blacks to the rightÂ
11. Save the project! This process can work differently depending on each image so I intend to document anything that I might do different such as change the opacity of the layer instead of using blend modes etcÂ
