biography :
the van sant family was always called trash. they were a family of seven, living in a cramped, falling to pieces house on the outskirts of ashville. nic is the middle child of the family. they were one of the poorer families in their part of town.
nic’s father worked two jobs to keep the family afloat and their mother did what she could to contribute with her own job and any odd jobs she could find, which mostly left nic alone with their siblings or adultless most of the time. however they were a normal family, even if some people spread rumors about them.
divorce mention / for the most part, life was alright for nic until they turned six and their parents got a divorce. it didn’t surprise anyone. with the problems their parents were having, and little money saved up, tensions were high. nic was old enough to know what was happening. their father left and nic never saw him again.
nic’s mom started dating someone shortly after the divorce and when nic was eight, she remarried. their new mom was more like nic than anyone else in the family, as she was an architect and her job was more math than anything else.
life was beginning to look up, since now they only had to share a room with one sibling, not three. having two moms wasn’t an adjustment, in a town like asheville, it was almost normal, but they felt comfortable living in a house that got them.
but when high school came around for them, nic started noticing that kids had a thing about material possessions. they could never afford the things their peers had and it annoyed them. their family still didn’t have the money for fancy things, but nic knew they deserved those things.
drugs tw / nic got mixed in with the wrong crowd and ended up selling drugs. they weren’t able to keep themself from being involved in that whole scene. partying and drinking and drug use. their senior year they overdosed. they went to rehab and finished their senior year over the summer.
nic followed their brother to berkley where they studied areospace engineering. college was a breeze for them and they managed to graduate in three and a half years. nic got a job in roswell. they plan on getting a master’s degree in phyics.
their two pet fish are named after homer hickman and dorothy vaughan, two people that they really believe helped in space exploration.
“Are you old enough to drink? Can I see an ID?” Bryce was mostly teasing, but the blond really did remind him of some high school student trying to get some booze. “Work, huh?” they repeated as they prepared their drink. “What do you do for work, then?”
“Yeah,” they pulled out their wallet and showed their ID. Sometimes they forgot that they looked so young. Although they never thought they looked that young compared to some people. “I’m an aerospace engineer.” And then sometimes they forgot that a job like that sounded way more impressive than it actually was. “Okay, well, I do realize this does seem like just a tale some young kid would make up to you know look older, but...” Nic pulled their phone out and swiped through to find a picture of them with their moms at graduation. “Me with my parents at my graduation from Berkley.”
It was normal for them to not to listen to what they were supposed to do in situations. Like anything where they were supposed to act like a decent, normal, not a weird person, they failed. In situations where they were supposed to act calm and collected, they often also didn’t do that. Nic had never been in a big huge storm like this before; they usually weren’t this bad back home. And they still hadn’t gotten used to storms like this. “Do I really have to stay here longer? I need to make sure my telescope is okay.” The nurse gave them a look and walked off. They kept asking the question every time they entered the room as if the answer was going to change. The storm probably wasn’t that bad. “What are you in here for?” They were acting like this was hell, when really it wasn’t that bad. Nic just wasn’t a huge fan of hospitals.
it’s totally fine for bryce to flirt with a pretty lady while on the job, right? employee rights or whatever. nonetheless, they have to shift their attention when a customer pops up. “hello, what drink can i get for you?” if he sounds a little bitchy, don’t take it personally. he’s just unenthusiastic about customer service on principle, but really, shouldn’t we all be?
Nic was doing their best to forget about studying. Too many classes, too much math. And usually they were good at math, but fuck. The Wild Pony had to be their favorite place to drink whenever they were frustrated. Nic watched as the bartender flirted with a lady until they finally noticed them. “Uh... how about a gin and tonic with lime?” Simple to start out with. “Or whatever. I’m not picking. Avoiding work.”
