I noticed Victorās fans called him Vitya even though obviously they donāt know him. So this is acceptable? If one of them got to speak to him in person, would they still use Vitya or Victor? Iām just confused about what fans of public figures call them and if they would also call them that in person (to get attention, maybe) because they donāt know each other, but fans still have affection for the public figure. I hope this makes sense.
But like, we doĀ know him. weāre with him constantly for a full series, we know who he is. I call Viktor VityaĀ all the time when I write my outlines for my fic and such. heās Vitya, our favorite Russian ice skating legend and absolute fool. and heās a fictional character, Russian refers to fictional characters by their diminutives all the time (ie. Misha, Cheburashka, Uncle Vanya - i think those are pretty well known on tumblr at least ?).Ā anyway, I pulled one of the popular text posts from VK to find a YOI specific example (linkĀ ; disclaimer that i didnāt really read thru it, itās just popular) and if you ctrl+fĀ Š®ŃŠ° (Yura) itās all over the place. I mean itās really not a big deal, a diminutive isnāt so special that we canāt call our beloved characters by it just bc theyāre fictional. thereās no harm done hereĀ :)
yknow Iām gonna be real here. I really donāt know a lot about sports. I have no idea if skaters attract the same public fan base as, say, an actual celebrity. like, Idk how Iād refer to Johnny Weir or anyone else if I ever met them, how professional athletes interact with the public is so beyond me. I can tell you that ppl do refer to Russian celebrities by their diminutives. think Vladimir Pozner, who gets called VolodyaĀ bc heās just that well-known to ppl. or like, my favorite and beloved Vitas, whose stage name is literally just his diminutive. iām not gonna go up to Vitas and be like omg Vitaliy Vladasovich. iāve like, never called him anything other than Vitas. so i mean, if real life ! viktor was a public figureĀ then yeah, i could see VityaĀ being used
iām trying to compare it to real life examples tho. and google saysĀ Evgeni Plushenko is where I should be looking so I went thru a VK group and if itās not the FN + LN combination, then I just see Evgeni. iām not finding his diminutive. but like, this is one exampleĀ and i have no clue if Plushenko is personally popular ???Ā would real Viktor be such a household name that i know to call him Vitya?Ā itās a bit beyond me tbh.Ā iāll go through more vk groups if you want, if you can find some more direct representative of Viktor. celebrity culture is just kinda beyond me tho, Vitas is one of these few exceptions where I donāt call a celebrity by FN + LN
iām sorry if this answer was confusing. itās a definitive yesĀ on calling our fictional ViktorĀ āVityaā. but iām of no use in saying if he would be familiar enough to be called anything but ViktorĀ by his fans if this were irl. and the yoi verse seems to be a bit different bc thereās like,Ā āYuriās Angelsā and a lot of familiarity by his fans (tho he also seems to have an instagram following so maybe thatās why) and Viktor gets calledĀ āthe worldās most eligible bachelorā or something. like the popularity of skaters is so exaggerated in the show (obviously) that maybe viktor isĀ a household name. i think my final answer is just go back, think about how familiar ppl are with Viktor, and have fans follow that. and if youāre really in doubt just go by Viktor
