Numbers Never Lie Kataang edition

The aamount of views and likes on this post for The Aang: The Last Airbender movie is very telling. In just a short amount of time, it already surpassed anything that fanfic live action Avatar has done. This is real impact. People want Kataang.

It's pretty strange to frame this as a kataang vs zutara thing. The fandom consensus is that both this movie and natla are bad but both caused a huge surge in zutara fandom. This movie probably even moreso, despite not having any zutara in it.

The movie also barely had Kataang in it. It was established that they were in a relationship, but--and I'm going off of vibes here--it felt like the writers spent almost as much time to making fun of Zutara as they did portraying scenes were Katara and Aang directly interacted with each other as if they were in a relationship (I'm not counting shouting from a distance).

Right? I said when I watched the movie that if I cared about kataang, I would have been really disappointed, because the movie shows me nothing of what I would have liked to see about their relationship. I joked that the movie trailer makes it seem like a forbidden romance between Aang and Taga, and frankly, that relationship has more development than kataang.

Tagaang would be more compelling than what's being established in canon, the fanarts are already great and the spicy ones are oh so sweet.

Also, if Aang is not yet the Avatar he needs to be, and he's dead in LoK, when does he actually become the Avatar? This movie was supposed to be his moment?

I can't tell if Bryan is attracted to his own creation or made Aang into the male power fantasy he and Mike were never able to be.

His implied immaturity at the grown age of 25 is either an excuse for their immaturity, a push of a belief that men don't need to be accountable as adults or a cover up for their bad writing and it's less than loved reception from the leak.

Weird how kataang shippers will cry colonizer sympathizer and genocide supporter while happily embracing incest simply to stick it to Zutara shippers.

Everyone is allowed to ship what they want, but don't lie to me about your selective morality and the fact that you never actually cared about the communities you exploit for moral high ground.

Just because something is canon doesn't mean it's good canon. There are plenty of canon things that are utter trash and when canon doesn't satisfy you, you are absolutely allowed to look for an alternative that does.

It's like eating apple pie when you hate apples. You don't have to keep choking down canon simply because Bryke made it.

Anyway, this singular piece of artwork has made me dislike Zutara

I already covered this but let's repeat for those who are choosing to be willfully ignorant. This art is over 13 years old made by a fan who may have been 16 at the time and was part of a Disney couples series. She also did Rapunzel, Mulan and others I'm sure you'll come up with some other nonsense as to why those are morally disgusting if we wait long enough.

She was a kid who liked Disney, Zutara and wanted to be an artist - something she achieved - and didn't understand the implications because she was a kid.

American history isn't default knowledge, there are a lot of nations with their own histories that even today do not the true story of Pocahontas, many just thought it was a cute movie and only found out years later. America isn't the center of the world.

No one in the ZK fandom praises this art but we're also not going to disparage a child who didn't understand the implications of her Disney art.

You're cherry picking a decade old, kid made fan art to justify a made up moral high ground and it looks incredibly stupid.

Kataang shippers: Zuko and Katara don't make any sense, they never had any chemistry, Zutara shippers are constantly making up things that were never there.

Meanwhile Nickelodeon: From their turbulent, flaming start to their touching, cool end, Zuko and Katara have been through a lot together! While they never ended up together, there is an undeniable connection and chemistry between these two elemental opposites that deserves to be recognized and celebrated!

Every time I saw a bad fandom, I felt bad for the creators because in my naive brain "they didn't deserve it." Well now that I've matured and experienced multiple fandoms, I can confidently say that fandoms reflect their creators beautifully.

The atla fanbase loves props up their female characters as "amazing" and "the standard on how to write women" but when actual women make their opinions known about their dislike for the way the women of atla were written, the fandom immediately runs to stomp them out.

The atla fanbase praises the creators for poc representation but when the actual poc they're supposedly representing speak out about their grievances with the show, they're told that they should be GRATEFUL they even got any rep in the west and that because it's a fantasy show it doesn't need to be culturally accurate. How can you claim this show is a celebration of different cultures while refusing to hear out the people of said cultures?

The fandom is pretentious about how inclusive the source material is and if you say anything BUT glaze they'll type the most sexist and racist shit you'll ever read.

My fav is they need to protect Katara from being shipped with Zuko because he's a colonizer.

Yet they're calling people from colonized countries who try to relate their experiences to atla racist, and saying there's different types of colonization, like you're not allowed to speak unless you were oppressed the 'right' way.

Kataang shipper: Katara could never be Fire Lady because she'd be stripped of her culture and reduced looking pretty and making babies.

I find it so weird that ka's version of Katara is such a push over that she would just let her culture be taken away. You're telling me that the girl that forced an entire tribe to drop their culturally embedded misogyny for her, would just go 'oh, ok' when some idiot told her she couldn't wear furs or couldn't celebrate the solstice?

But we're the ones mischaracterizing her.

The guy who became a traitor to his nation? Who chose to give up his chance at the crown, not once, but twice? The same guy who is canonically changing Fire Nation culture at the school level and canonically had a vested interest in rebuilding the SWT?

That Zuko would tell Katara she can't wear blue? The Zuko that had his life threatened by Katara and knows she could bloodbend him into a pretzel, would tell her fur isn't appropriate for court?

Katara is one of the most powerful waterbenders in the world and the biggest advocate for justice in the series, but apparently Katara is too weak to defend her right to her culture and its practices.

She would be a representative of the SWT possibly the NWT, a friend of the avatar and King Kuei who owes her a debt for helping him get his kingdom back. A councilman would risk pissing off a woman with that many connections and influence over hair loopies?

Even if they did, the fact that they think Katara wouldn't be tenacious about fighting to display her culture or wouldn't possess the audacity to publicly wear her skins, beads and furs even after she was told not to, is an insult to her character. We haven't even gotten to how she happily and easily siezes power and control over situations at only 14, they think she'd do less as an adult? Some of them really do enjoy the cut down caged bird Bryke has made her into and it shows.

Zutara isn't canon, what happens in a Zutara storyline is completely up to the creator to choose and the fact that kataangers are constantly choosing for Katara being stripped of her cultural identity, her power and her autonomy is telling, maybe it's even projection.
