mahler didn’t just write a poem on some sheet music for his wife. he wrote the entire adagietto to her basically as a marriage proposal. the adagietto has only been misinterpreted as a funeral dirge. it has always been a love song. what this means for it’s inclusion in hannibal during the eating of freddie lounds is that freddie lound’s funeral (their eating of her) is only a misinterpretation. in reality, will sitting down at the table and hannibal allowing him to sit at the table to partake in one of the deepest, most integral aspects of his life is both of them saying “i love you.”
