The Bridge of Sighs... (Not the one with the people on it; the enclosed one over the gondola) These days, gondoliers take couples under the bridge using the Rio di Palazzo where it is considered romantic to kiss as you pass under it. That, however, is not what the bridge is named for. It is the passage from the Doge's Palace (Interrogation rooms) to the "New Prison". The "sighs" are from the prisoners because it is the last glimpse they will have of the outside world before they have served their sentences.
