Cold... everything felt cold and heavy for Kieran. His sight was watery and blurry as he was slowly sinking into the deep sea. He barely was able to make you out; just when he felt cold lips pressing against his own; Kieran senses slowly came back, became sharper again and the pressure on his lungs became lighter, before he took his very first breath under water—without drowning.
It has been pretty much the 5th time alone this day when you’ve hidden yourself behind a rock, watching the people at the docks working; or more likely one specific person, who had caught your line of sight the very first time you’ve swam closer to the surface of the sea and caught a glimpse of the fisherman, throwing out his net to catch some fish. The sun was just high enough, illuminating the man just the right way; a thin layer of sweat already glistering on the skin and the messy hair bundled up to a bun.
Since that day, you’ve sneaked up to the surface, watching the man from a distance until he somehow managed to catch you the first time; bundled up amongst all the fish Kieran had pulled you out of the water, a shocked expression on the otherwise tired and exhausted face, when he was about to load his catch into the barrels he had prepared. Kieran had stepped away from the net, sitting now on his arse and was rubbing his eyes for a moment, just after he’d looked back at a beautiful human face; wet hair framing the pale skin. It wasn’t longer than a moment, but you’ve used it to jump off the boat and swam back down the sea; just deep enough the human wouldn’t see you again; leaving him confused on his boat. But surely this wasn’t a one-time occasion; nonono. Since that day you would’ve let yourself be caught over and over again; leaving a very confused and slightly paranoid Kieran back on this boat every time.
On some days Kieran was already questioning his sanity; on others he was wondering if he would see your face again or not. Then the questions started. Occasionally a “is this real?” or “am i really going insane?” until it became almost normal for the older man to see you amongst his catch of the day; Kieran even sometimes caught you just in time, seeing you in your full glory, before you slipped off his boat yet again... a merperson... something from the fairytales and drunken fishermen tales at the bar; never had Kieran thought that these tales were real; he would’ve never imagined that his little stalker was indeed something other water pioneers were afraid off. Many different tales were told about the merfolk; many of them being similar as they lure in fishermen and sea pioneers with their beautiful voices, making the humans drown in the sea, but Kieran never believed it. Not then and certainly not now, after he noticed, that you were able to understand him. The conversations weren’t that long—or informative at all; Kieran just watched you grinning at him from time to time, while you laid amongst the fish again, this time playfully wrapping some seaweed around his wrists, you brought with you, while Kieran watched everything with an almost blank stare, a cigarette in between his lips, while he inspected the way you’ve managed to rope his hands together; marking your territory qithout him knowing what he willingly agreed to. You laughed at his sad attempt to free himself again; Kieran slightly panicking as he realized how sturdy the fiber was, what also made him laugh for the first time around you. You helped him release his wrists again, before the human picked you up, letting you rest for a moment in his strong arms and let you enjoy the warm, hard feeling of his muscular body, before Kieran threw you back into the sea. This would go on for probably a week or two; until Kieran stopped sailing out and catching fish. Of course you were sad about that, but you couldn’t change it. All you could do now was waiting for him to return to the docks... but he never did... Not until then.
It was a stormy night, when you caught a glimpse of a boat, that looked way to familiar to you. Why would Kieran's boat be out at this hour? And after all why did he chose this kind of weather to sail? He never was out at night; and even less at this kind of weather. Curiously you swam towards the surface, when you heard a faint voice laced with malicious intents and a slight sing sang...the voice of sirens. But before you were able to reach the surface and try to save whoever was on the boat, something or more like someone fell into the sea. The rough sea had swallowed him faster than you initially thought, and when you finally reached the body, it was almost too late. Kieran was already getting colder; no more bubbles left his mouth and nose when you got ahold of Kieran’s body. Your brain was running lapses; he wouldn’t make it in time, until you reach the surface with him, and you also couldn’t let him die like this; so, you pressed your lips onto his. Kieran's eyes opened more up; you felt his senses became sharper again, and he took his very first breath under water, without drowning.
You’ve made it; you’ve saved Kieran. Now you would be able to reach the surface in time, as he was now able to breathe under water for a small period... But there was a small voice inside your head; barely noticeable enough until now. A voice that told you to keep him here; to keep him under the sea, away from the reach of the sirens.
A pair of hazel grey eyes looked at you, confused why he could breathe, before his face changed into a painful expression, and he let out a silent scream; when your teeth sunk deep into his skin, tearing and ripping it open. Blood mixed with the salty water and not long after the bite, you let go of the man, you strangely fell for.
Kieran was obviously in pain, even if you couldn’t hear his grunts; you knew it. The transformation was painful after all. You’ve watched it so many times by now and your heart ached for a moment, when you now inflicted the same pain onto Kieran... but he was yours after all...
