So in my household we love to hate on the upcoming Nolan Odyssey, not because of any of the recent stuff like the casting decisions, no, the vitriol predates that. My partner just hates Nolan (I like a few of his films but I find the hate entertaining to indulge) and loves mythology and has been skeptical to outright loathing of this film from the start.

Well, we were explaining to a friend who was unfamiliar with the Odyssey why my partner found Matt Damon such a baffling choice for Odysseus, one reason being like… look at him. That is not a twisty turny man. That’s just some dude trying to get home, probably to watch the Red Sox game.

But then our friend asked, who DOES have a face in Hollywood that fits what we would prefer? Who just LOOKS like a twisty turny man?

I was stumped for a moment, but my friends, now I have it.

THAT man has a twisty turny face, unlike Matt Damon. He looks like he’s got three schemes backing up the one he’s currently working on and there’s no guarantee any of them will work. He also can pull off pathos even while you feel like you can’t trust him as far as you can throw him.

That said, it was a mistake to realize this because now I would absolutely KILL for a take on the Trojan Cycle with him as Odysseus omg

i don't even know how to properly convey how fucking insane and disappointing that is

like i knew to not expect much from the movie, given nolan's blatant disrespect and disregard towards Greece and it's history and traditions, and also the disrespect and disregard towards the tradition of the Odyssey and it's adaptations in itself, the architecture, the clothing, the battle armour, even the ships all either sourced from another culture or just downright being something he callously made up to satisfy his own weird needs

and now this??? specially given the whole political aspect and climate between Iran and United States??? you have THE star of the modern generation, arguably the biggest name in your crew for your younger audience, attending an hours long event with an illegally sourced, housed in ENGLAND even, millennia old artifact that has nothing to do with the story that you are telling and is also from the country hers country is constantly attacking and breaking ceasefire agreement, it's just tone death and crass, and just as bad as when margot robbie wore the Taj Mahal Necklace to promote "WUNTERING HEIGHTS".

Reasons to boycott Nolan's The Odyssey (that I know of so far):

They shot in the illegally occupied Western Sahara as reported by Middle East Eye (thanks to @fuckyeahdavidandyonatan for bringing that up)

They dumped their props into a protected area of the Italian sea after shooting (thanks to @godslop for finding the article in English)

Zendaya wearing looted 3000 years old Iranian earrings for the premiere of the movie + having her stylist fly on a private jet just to get her a dress for the premiere in London

No Greek actors in a movie about Greek heritage

While people mentioned that Anne Hathaway was flown in to the set every day, apparently it was not on a private jet but on a helicopter that was being used anyway to fly in equipment.

None of these things are new in Hollywood or exclusive to the Odyssey, its director or its actors, but I do think we as audience should start holding Hollywood accountable when it disrespects our culture, heritage, environment, especially when it's movies that are this big and have a huge budged that would allow for more conscious choices.

I highly recommend the book The Five: The Untold Lives of the Women Killed by Jack the Ripper by Hallie Rubenhold and the free podcast, Bad Women (S1) by Pushkin which covers the same material (though the book has more detail).

It's not about the crime or Jack the Ripper, it's about the women who were killed, the majority of whom were not connected with the sex trade at all. Their lives are fascinating and so full of different experiences. The book is an amazing window into the lives of lower/middle class women and their struggles.

Though it's set in the Victorian era, the ways these women and others in poverty were treated and thought of is hauntingly familiar. Disability and mental health problems are a major factor in many of the women's lives as well.

Also, the British military backdated someone's marriage so their kids would be legitimate and I find that strangely satisfying.

I've been thinking... Has anyone noticed the commodification of anime? I'm not talking merch but the artstyle that's replaced slower yet purposeful action in scenes with special effects and fast paced narrative.

Like I just saw the difference between the original One Piece and the current remake and hands down, it doesn't evoke the feeling of enjoyment of the original. Make all the jokes you want, but despite the length, the show has always had an immersive feeling that I can't resonate that much with the latest seasons. The last arc I could enjoy was Dressrosa.

Even with other shows, like SpyxFamily, so many key scenes have been disrupted by special effects covering (the water from Loid rescuing Anya from the pool, the steam covering too much for Twilights silhouette, the proposal scene was not viewed properly because of the dust covering them ugh I hated that)

That's why I appreciate JJK with them being intentional with their animation and creating movements that can be seen from Studio Ghibli. (Though I can't say I agree with their working conditions)

Or maybe I just long for the days of how older anime felt drawn with such details, movement and intentional panel shots that makes me WANT to watch it because that's when you know it's a good story and not because of the hype.

this and also the only difference between fanfic writers and writers who sell their own original works as careers is that fanfics aren’t monetized. that’s all.

being a “professional” writer doesn’t mean your works are inherently better than fanfics. I’ve read so many fics that are more professionally written than some published books.

whether or not a piece of writing is monetized has nothing to do with its quality.
