Sans hasn’t really thought about stuff like this before or at this level, and as such he doesn’t really have an answer for all these difficult questions. It takes time before he makes a decision.
Gaster is ostensibly talking to Sans with all these moral quandaries, but he’s primarily thinking about his own situation. He has reasons for thinking this way. (I’m not saying they’re good reasons, but they are reasons)
Gaster passes off playing Chess as a form of IQ test in his notes and such (thus the clipboard), but in actuality he just wants to play Chess with someone new. He’s bored of playing with Alphys and Asgore isn’t… very good at it. Sans took to it pretty quick, which pleased him. On a technical note drawing an ongoing chess game across multiple panels is a nightmare aaaaaaaaaaaghhhh
