Reblog if its ok to spam you with boops
my writing fundamentally changed forever ten years ago when i realized you could use sentence structure to control peopleās heart rates. is this still forbidden knowledge or does everyone know it now
?????? *raises hand* Iāve been writing for years and donāt know this trick by these words! do tell?
Okay, so a few people have asked for me to cite the dark magics at them, and iām super happy to share because itās my favorite thing ever.Ā
so, letās see if i can explain this the same way that i learned. read a sentence out loud. you come to a full stop when you hit the period, and you take a normal, breath. but, when you hit a comma, you take a slightly longer pause. and when you hit a dash - you take an even longer pause.Ā
this is a natural rhythm that we pick up when weāre first taught to read; we do it without even thinking. but when you startĀ to think about it, you realize that it can become a tool.
think of your heartbeat. a period is badump. a comma is badump-dump. and a dash is thump badump. one breath. a longer breath. two breaths.
that means what you read automatically affects the rhythm of your breathing and your heartrate. which means that you can control the amount of physical tension your reader feels⦠by altering your punction and your sentence structure.
for fast paced scenes, you use short sentences. a lot of hard stops. mostly periods, with just a few commaās thrown in for the full breath. your readerās heartrate accelerates. their breathing is slightly and unintentionally, on their end, quicker. you hit the dramatic ending of the scene - and your readerās body phsyically feels the gasp, the breath of fresh air, of these longer sentences.
now, read that paragraph again ant take note of your natural pauses, and how it subtly affects your breathing.Ā
the same thing can be said of commaās and dashes. while they can be used as a breath of fresh air, they can also cause a new line of tension as they lead your reader to hold their breath. during this section, you should use longer sentences; breaking up the harshness of the pauses by using variations of punction. read this paragraph out loud from the start and take note of how long you go between pauses and full breaths.Ā
and then, comes the biggest trick.
the hard stop.
the paragraph.
because while the periods, commas, and dashes are variations on a short stop, the paragraph is a hard stop. you take a full breath. you pause for a moment, then move to the start of the next paragraph.
which means you can create an entirely new sort of dramatic tension. read the sentences that are in bold. see how you take a naturally longer pause at the end of each paragraph?
see how it makes you feel?Ā
how it makes you breath different?Ā
how doing it once, twice, or three times creates a different line of tension?Ā
this little magic trick can be used to cause a readerās heartrate to speed up during a fight or chase scene. it can be used to cause their breathing to slow down during moments of dramatic tension, sorrow, or softness. and it can be used to create hard breaks that add a new level of physically felt emphasis to your written work.
i hope these examples make sense! itās my favorite writing trick!
Expecting every trans woman to become a full fledged voice actor to have their gender respected is bad actually
itās almost that time of the year :)
NOTE TO SELF-SLOW THE FUCK DOWN!
Slow the fuck down is also the way to avoid scams, social engineering, phishing, etc.
"Oh, no the CEO of my employer is having an emergency and I need to click this link right now!!!"
Slow down...
"Why would the CEO be emailing ME of all people? Maybe this email is a phishing attack that would get my employer hacked and me fired for allowing it." (It probably is a phishing email.)
In general, "Slow the fuck down" is an extremely powerful information literacy skill.

"Today marks one year since the death of the Peopleās Bubbie Shatzi Weisberger. Before she passed, she said, āIāll fight like hell for a free Palestine until the day I die. Then Iāll keep fighting. Your queer ancestor is with you.ā
If youāve been rising up in solidarity with Palestine these past two months, your queer ancestor is indeed with you, along with countless other antizionist Jewish ancestors. For many, family and community rifts may be especially painful right now. No matter what, you are not alone. Remember that you have a long lineage of elders and ancestors at your back.
Last night, Israel resumed its brutal bombing of Gaza and has already killed dozens of people. Shatzi would encourage all of us to do everything we can right now for a permanent, lasting ceasefire. To mourn the dead and fight like hell for the living.
Shatzi died on World AIDS Day, which was bāsheret ("destinedā) because in addition to being a lifelong organizer, she was a nurse for 47 years who cared for people living and dying with AIDS.
From ACT UPās organizing to end AIDS to the movement for Palestinian freedom, we honor the ancestors and movements who made us possible."
We will be forever grateful to the ancestors who paved the path before us. May their memories fuel us to work towards freedom for all people ā no exceptions."
When Palestinianās say āFrom the river to the sea, Palestine will be free,ā they are not calling for the ethnic cleansing of Israeli Jews/all Jewish people entirely. They are just asking for decolonisation.
Between the river (the Jordan River) and the sea (the Mediterranean Sea) lies Palestine, which has been occupied by Israel for the past 75 years. When they say Palestine will be free, they mean exactly that- for decolonisation; to end the illegal occupation of land that was theirs first.
I donāt know where the idea that this motto means genocide or is a ārallying cry for terroristsā came from, but all sources I have seen that spread this message are all pro-Israel and have unreliable propaganda filled articles. There is one article specifically that says that the Palestine flag emoji is used as shorthand for this phrase, and using it is antisemitic.
I hope people keep using this motto, keep chanting it at protests, and know that it does not making them antisemitic, pro-genocide, or an ignorant person. For it to not be obvious at this point that no Palestinian wants an ethnic cleansing of any kind, is shocking.
decolonizepalestine has an amazing article with more details about the history of the phrase and the myths surrounding it.
What level/kind of pressure do you believe will eventually result in cease-firing? what should we do ?
i don't know what we should do but this is the last thing refaat alareer, who was just killed by a targeted israeli strike in gaza alongside his family asked for:
"More pressure on the media more coverage more Palestinian voices more protests"
just more, more, more. what everyone is doing is already good. just keep doing it.
Fuck personality tests. Who comes to your mind when I say āMichaelā
the saddest sight in the world is a married couple at a musical and the wife is super excited and happy and the husband looks like he was dragged along and heās making a big deal about how much he doesnāt want to be there and the wife gets embarrassed or ashamed. this isnāt a funny post, itās actually heartbreaking and i see it happen at like every other musical i attend.
Yeah, as an usher what makes me sad is when I see wives clearly dressed in their Sunday best, beaming and buying merch and smiling at me as I hand them a program, toting some guy dressed in jeans and a sweatshirt who declines a program. And thatās at least a quarter of the couples who come in or more. Like come on man, she really loves this stuff, canāt you try to enjoy it for her at least?
About as bad as when you see a big-eyed kid who looks like this is the greatest day of their life, all excited to see this show, and their parent/grandparent/aunt/Cousin/Friend/whoever they convinced to take them keeps making fun of them and saying how dumb or ridiculous theyāre being. For Gods sake, this is a person you care about and this is a thing that means a lot to them. Smile, get off your phone, and be happy for them.
This goes for ANY loved onesā interests. Doesnāt matter the interest, doesnāt matter the loved one. Example: my hubby loves airplanes. He works in the aviation industry. He basically has avgas flowing in his veins. No matter where we go on trips, heāll find an aviation musuem. I donāt mind aircraft museums, but he will literally stop and take photos of rivets. Seriously. One time I was with him at the National Air and Space Museum and I had my nice DSLR camera and he asked if I could take some photos of the seams of the SR71 with āyour good camera,ā and you know what? It wasnāt my favorite subject to photograph, but I gladly did it because it made him happy.
BTW, weāve been doing this for the 30+ years weāve been together. He comes with me to symphonies and art galleries and lets me have the remote during hockey season to the point where heās now a fan. I know heās daydreaming about airplane engines a majority of the time, but heās there and trying and I love that about him.
So yeah, be present for your favorite people and make an effort. It will pay joyful lifelong dividends you canāt begin to imagine.
I do not give a shit about yoga or education. My sister loves yoga, my mom is in love with her teaching job with her whole self. You better believe I will get excited about that shit. Least I can do for the amount of times theyāve listened to me fangirl various media properties.
man, the way some of the reddit refugees talk about moving to tumblr is kinda depressing; they're saying stuff like "No one has belittled me on tumblr yet" and "people actually talk to me here."
We've got to rehabilitate these users so that they can see what it's like to have a non-hostile internet experience.
redditās pvp experience was unmatched. i didnāt realize how naturally defensive and ready to fight on the internet i was until i didnāt have to any more
how dare you hide this in the tags
