@nightsofblue
My family didn't like that I enjoyed reading.
Well at the beginning they loved it. I was this almost genius child that would say the most interesting things. I knew a lot about science and history and geography and greek mythology. I knew a lot about everything and they loved me for that. I was eight wondering about planets and galaxies and trilobites and dinosaurs.
Later reading gave me something they weren't expecting, reading gave me ideas, ideas of speaking up and running away when I felt unsafe. Ideas of fighting against rude words and abusive fists. It also made me realize how horrible my life was, how unloved I was.
One night when I was fourteen I was on the porch, reading New Moon, yes, from the twilight series. I was devouring those pages with an urge to know what was going on between Jacob and Bella. Suddenly my mom approached and say "If your grandma finds out you're out here reading she's going to beat you up."
I felt anger, sadness, dissapointment, fear. I kept reading, but it wasn't the same, I was afraid of being beaten up at any moment. So at the end I went to sleep.
Later, when I was sixteen my mother said she didn't understand what was the fuss about children that loved to read, that as a mother of one she couldn't understand what were the advantages on it.
Now I'm twenty-six. I live alone. I have no contact with my family. Clearly the advantages of me loving to read were only for me, to save me.
I know one day my child will sit on the porch and will read books without fearing someone will hit them. I know, because I'll be there reading a book on my own.
"Please. Don't make this any harder."
You've seen the Magic of Pegasus AU, now we have the Island Princess AU!! This entire ballroom scene has lived in my head rent free since I was six. It's like the forbidden love / royalty trope for beginners. So here you go! (Click for quality obviously)
zutara x pride and prejudice au
katara, who had a fear of abandonment, deserved to end up with a partner who supported her needs and didn't constantly run away from his problems, she deserved a partner who was unselfishly loving, she deserved a partner who would respect the way she, a powerful master, wanted to deal with her own trauma, she deserved a partner that would help her see, she deserved a partner who did not touch her unless she provided her consent, she deserved a partner she didn't have to mother, she deserved a partner who worked to take care of himself and the world that was his responsibility, she deserved to spend her life being described by her own merit and making her own choices...she deserved so, so much more than she got

nico di angelo is actually so fuckin funny tho bc you have this grumpy, emo, intimidating kid who canonically has an aura of death around him and literally melts in and out of shadows and yet hes,, also somehow one of the friendliest/well connected people in pjo/hoo/toa??? like he’s the first demigod to properly acknowledge hestia in ages, he went between camp half-blood and camp jupiter for like at least 6 months, if not more, and kept the secret to himself, hes pals w/ mrs o’leary, he managed to find the troglodytes, a species so well hidden even the gods thought they were made up, he managed to convince hades to fight in the battle of manhattan, hes been to at least one council of cloven elders meeting, he finds may castellan and manages to talk to her abt the curse of achilles, he apparently chats to clovis and possibly other hypnos cabin kids in his dreams, he knows one of the last remaining etruscan gods, hes basically the only kid outside of cabin 12 that mr D likes/looks out for, he becomes close friends with reyna, probably the most closed off person in the series second only to himself, he visited bob in the underworld, even tho he ‘smells like death’ the pegasi are chill with him after getting the athena parthenos to chb, idk i just find it so funny that u have this lil street rat son of hades who unsettles p much everyone around him and summons ghosts and that hes also like,, the guy who not only knows everyone but is liked well enough by everyone to be able to cash in favours and shit
^ provided the above, if you cannot be friends with Nico di Angelo, I don’t think he is the problem.
yeah it’s you. yes you are the problem.
like he’s friend with a goddess, an ancient Titan, a god-thought-to-be-made-up species, an intimating and powerful preator. he is the (i’m not sure perhaps??) only demigod to have a somewhat family bond with his godly parents. like he refers to Persephone as his step-mother. Hades Lord of the Underworld listens to him and blessed him and warns him and also frequent visits (i bet Nico can walk freely in that castle and play fetch w/ cerberus. fight me).
and you can’t seem to find the way to be in at least tolerable term with him? i’m strongly convinced it’s majorly your fault, really.
video essays i enjoyed this month if y’all’s feed is dry! most of these are abt shows and films. not linking these videos but i also fell down the ghcu (gabbie hanna cinematic universe) so um… yeah if you’re bored out of your mind and have hours to waste, there are thousands of videos abt this bitch tw for sexual assault tho
- you’re not sexually liberated, you’re 16
- why does the voice keep failing?
- styling the winx live action like it was meant to be
- whatever happened to the token british youtubers?
- let’s talk about elite season 4

- tyler perry’s acrimony is actually a stealth masterpiece
- race-baiting, queer-baiting, colorism, featurism, and performative diversity: bridgerton
- the false narrative of aria montgomery
- a deep dive into black femininity and class
- alison dilaurentis: when a queen loses her crown
- olivia and sabrina… today’s miley and selena?
- jeffrey star: the cockroach that can’t be cancelled
- elite: almost, not quite
- the problem with teen dramas
- twilight is a psychological thriller, not a love story
- chilling adventures of sabrina: a frustrating waste of potential
- algorithms and skin tone bias (colorism), to be dark on the internet/“breadtube” and all other videos by khadija mbowe
- not a video essay but this brownie cookie recipe changed my life lmao i’m une baker now
Caption this:
at least the song made their love canon
just focus on the credits’ song It’s TOTALLY Alberto’s Song to Luca.
Pixar can’t fool us, i mean why chose this song at all as the end credit song?
Here’s the English Translation of the song “città vuota” by Mina
“The streets are overcrowded, the crowd is around me,
It is talking to me and laughing
And nothing knows about you…
I see passersby around me
But I know, the city will seem to me empty
If you don’t come back.
There is that one who wants to be next to me every evening
But I don’t care if he gives me his kisses,
I always think about you, only about you
And I know, the city will seem to me empty
If you don’t come back.
How do you want to live alone, without me?
Don’t you feel that our love is not over yet?
Come back to me, my love,
And the city will not be empty any more.
The streets are overcrowded, the crowd is around me,
It is talking to me and laughing
And nothing knows about you…
I see passersby around me
But I know, the city will seem to me empty
If you don’t come back.
How do you want to live alone, without me?
Don’t you feel that our love is not over yet? ”
One of my favorite parts in Luca (2021) is when Giulia's father says a sea monster made him lose his arm, like the typical tragedy where some group is afraid of the other group bcs group B is 'bad', and then he laughs and says "This is how I came into this world" like YES. People with disabilities can be born like that. And it's okay!
Another thing: they didn't make it see like Giulia's father wasn't a good fisherman bcs his disability, but just because as a human, he didn't knew much about the ocean like Alberto and Luca did.
The positive portrayal of characters with disabilities makes me so happy!

articles/essays
the real tragedy of beth march (i recommend this on every chance i get. it's why i find beth to be the most fascinating character in little women)
remote control (read this because of sufjan stevens. a very good account of the tonya harding scandal)
my grandma the poisoner (the horror i experienced the first time i read this is unparalleled. completely, utterly disturbing)
the empathy exams (you've probably heard of this and, yes, it deserves the hype)
exploring q slur (sigh) desire in hbo's succession (on the homoerotic undertones in succession's both seasons. need i say more?)
celebrity culture is burning (this is from march 2020, after gal gadot posted that atrocious imagine cover)
the age of instagram face (spot-on criticism of instagram beauty culture, fantastic read )
the lawless energy of teen-age girls (this is a new yorker piece on an excellent photography collection depicting teenage girlhood)
youtube channels/videos
liziqi (her videos will undoubtedly make you feel better on an off-day, especially on the cold winter days to come!)
goodnight moon (you will not believe the effort put into these themed asmr videos. check out her babblebrook series for cozy fantasy vibes)
asmr in movies & tv (ignoring the one of harry potter, this playlist offers quite a satisfying experience)
barbie movie clips (you did not know you needed this. it's a playlist of scenes from old barbie movies in extremely high definition)
reading my old diary like it's a work of classic literature (such a fun, light-hearted concept! watch this if you feel heavy and need a lil' something to cheer you up)
the immersive realism of studio ghibli and why miyazaki's films sound pretty (watching video essays on studio ghibli films is the highest form of self-care)
that time disney remade beauty and the beast and why the music in the live-action disney remakes is worse than you thought (disney-bashing is another great form of self-care)
how coraline borrows from ancient forms of storytelling (more specifically, it's a video essay on how coraline utilizes classic horror/ghost story tropes. very fascinating)
is titanic good, actually? (a lengthy video essay on the sweeping, epic tragedy that is titanic. enjoy)
parasite - the power of symbols and parasite's perfect montage (on the magnificent brilliance of bong joon ho's parasite)
misc.
the mytholadies podcast (very easy listening experience and fascinating explorations of your favorite ladies from mythology. they also do themed episodes every month!)
all three hadestown albums on spotify: concept album, original cast recording (live), original broadway cast recording (if the myth of orpheus and eurydice lives on your mind rent free, you need to listen to these. my personal favorite is the original cast recording, but all are fantastic)
the husband stitch (the chilling short story by carmen maria machado from the collection 'her body and other parties'. this is a favorite of mine)
the lottery (on the off-chance you haven't read this unsettling masterpiece, do it now)
artist searches childhood bully on facebook, doesn't expect to find this (this comic changed my perspective on everything)
subscribe (another comic i keep thinking about, this one's a critique of youtuber self-care culture)
this post (directs to one of the best writing resources i have ever come across)
