Q & A section with Noda Satoru
it was partly translated by someone else but not in full, and i don’t think the existing translations are very good so i did my own. q&a section from the publishing magazine when the manga got an adaptation, original here. reposting it anywhere is fine, but please credit me.
Q1: Have you already decided what’s the actual deal with the gold? And if you have, could it possibly change as the story progresses?
Noda: It’s decided, of course. I don’t plan for any changes for now.
Q2: When did Sugimoto get his scars? He’s already sporting them during the war, as well as in the flashback scene in volume 4 when they’re shown heading to battle.
Noda: Early on into the war, I’d say. 1st Division fought at 203 Hill for three months and then headed towards Mukden as winter came. They’re on their way to Mukden in that flashback, you can see it by the clothing.
Q3: I work as a librarian, and the amount of references you quote at the end of the volumes is impressive. How do you search for and gather references and data?
Noda: The people whom I consult about the Ainu and whose wisdom I trust recommend me sources. They told me that even the most well-known fictional works featuring Ainu contain quite a bit of nonsense and that I should keep an eye out for that. For this reason I try to avoid reading fiction and buy the books that I was recommended instead, and then buy the books that they reference as well.
Q4: Would Shiraishi’s hair be straight or curly if he grew it out?
Noda: It would be slightly wavy.

Q&A section from the Golden Kamuy fanbook
sharing anywhere is fine, but please credit me.
Q1: Where and how did Shiraishi get the hanten (winter jacket) he’s wearing? My curiosity makes me lose sleep.
Noda: A brothel girl who was fond of him gave him her hanten she never wore in front of customers, saying that it must be cold to go home the way he was dressed. Shiraishi promised her that he’ll come again soon and give it back, but he never did.
Q2: Who gave Asirpa her ninkari (earrings)? Or did she make them herself? Noda: They’re a heirloom from her mother.
Q3: Sometimes I look at Shiraishi and can’t help thinking that he’s pretty cool, despite all odds. Is he a hunk or a clown, at the end of the day? Noda: Gentlemen of the world are esteemed by women based on aura and hairstyle. Men who manage to stay good-looking while sporting a buzz cut are the true hunks.

Sugimoto Saichi
Birthday: March 1st Birthplace: Kanagawa prefecture Likes: Dried persimmons, salted brains Dislikes: Locust tsukudani (locust that was simmered in soy sauce and mirin and shredded) Height: Shorter than Vasily, about the same height as Toni and Wilk, taller than Tsurumi and Koito Weight: Lighter than Nihei, about the same weight as Vasily and Tsukishima, heavier than Tsurumi
Commentary:
His emotions are expressed through his scarf. His injuries heal fast due to his abnormally high metabolism, and so do burns. You meet people with this kind of constitution once in a while. He sweats easily so his skin is always damp.
Asirpa
Birthday: January 1st Birthplace: Hokkaido, near Otaru Likes: Salted brains, Sugimoto’s osoma (miso) Dislikes: Snakes Height: Shorter than Ienaga and Nagakura, taller than Cikapasi Weight: Lighter than Inkarmat, about the same weight as Cikapasi
Commentary:
Her face and height changed the most out of all characters.
Shiraishi Yoshitake:
Birthday: March 3rd Birthplace: Southern Kanto region Likes: Sake, candy, white rice Dislikes: Deer brains Height: Shorter than Ogata, taller than Hijikata, Usami and Sofia Weight: Lighter than Koito, about the same weight as Ogata, Nikaido twins, Usami and Wilk, heavier than Kadokura
Commentary:
Sugimoto’s hidden partner, although he is more of a Fujiko rather than Jigei in relation to Lupin; there’s a sense of danger about him.

Interview with Noda Satoru from the Golden Kamuy fanbook
sharing anywhere is fine, but please credit me.
Q: Tell me how you feel about passing 6 years of serialization. Noda: I was already serializing at the time of my debut, so I guess I’d be able to give a summary when I’m finished. I don’t really think about how many years it’s been, it’s merely a checkpoint.
Q: What made you decide to become a mangaka? Noda: I feel like I wrote it down as my goal in my yearbook back in middle school. I also wanted to become a movie director, but as a mangaka you can create the entire thing by yourself.
When Golden Kamuy just took off I was living in a tiny apartment and the postman, a young fellow and a reader of Young Jump, realized that I’m Noda Satoru. The magazine was sending me a lot of things, so it was rather obvious. “Are you the author of Golden Kamuy?”, he asked in a surprised tone while looking around the cramped entryway. I could feel feel his confusion regarding the fact that that vast Hokkaido world of the manga was being created in this modest apartment. Or maybe he just expected me to be making more money and afford a better place. Anyhow, I just thought again about how a manga can be created in even the smallest room in the universe.
Q: Who is your favorite character and why? Noda: As always, it’s Tanigaki. But well, I love all of them. I want to showcase only the best parts of them, and it hurts when I fail. For example I’m very happy that there’s a character who stirs the pot as well as Usami. He’d be Katsuo in the world of Sazae-san.
