This week yinz were all working so hard at your awesome pieces, that we skipped our new tradition of a thought-provoking/contemporary artist inspired warm up!

So, view if you want this short video about one of my favorite people, Margaret Kilgallen; a bay area artist who did paintings, murals, and grafitti and was largely influenced by folk music, freight trains, and hand-rendered typography. She loved evidence of the artists’ hand in a piece, she played the banjo and surfed, and was one of the artists who came to be known as the “Mission school” movement. 

She is also featured in the movie Beautiful Losers  which is so great also and will lift your spirits if you’re feeling low about art or life in general.

Came back to the studio to find this on my desk.  At first I had no idea why Hannah had left it there or what its importance is / was.  I was actually quite nasty about it saying “its just some old catalog, why did you get this for me?”  I flipped through the pages and took in all the amazingly, detailed illustrations of the wears sold within.  I also noticed how much other information was packed into this thick catalog.  The next day my friends, the BODY, released a picture of their new album which is a direct take from this very cover.

This is Sunburned Hand of the man setting up before their show at Turn It Up records in Brattleboro Vt.  The story about me and this band is as fallows.  When I was maybe 13 or 14 years old I got a copy of the “drug” issue of Vice magazine.  In it was a review of someone who was in the band Sunburned Hand of Man.  The headline read “Totally Fucking Freak Out.”  The article was an interview about this guy and his experimentation with drugs over the years.  I don’t use drugs, other then alcohol and at the time had very limited experiences with drugs or people who used them.  In other words drugs didn’t really appeal to me or make me curious at all.  However, drug culture, art, and other people’s experiences do and have intrigued me over the years which is why I had a copy of this magazine in the first p;ace.  Basically,  I had it for the pictures and the picture above this article was a man, in a suit,  punching the air through bits of pumpkin flying across the frame while everyone else in this scene scrambled for protection.  I thought to myself “That’s what a party must be like!!!!!”  And I have been in a constant search for this “party” since then.  The closest I have come was playing catch with a watermelon that ended with me punching through it.   It wasn’t  a party though, it was breakfast and everyone was a little bummed.  I prefer at my ideal party that people get a little bummed but may also create their own chaos or destruction in response.

As far as this show goes,  I was handed another little bit of truth about this article.  I assume Sunburned was a totally crazy, freak out band but in actuality they seem to play music that is true to the jammy psych experience of many bands I have become weary of.  I stayed for the full show and let  myself connect to different parts of it.  They had two drummers which is always a treat for me to see.  One of them,  I think the guy from the fabled article,  was having an intense asthma attack the whole time but was pushing through it.  It was nerve racking but puzzling to watch, cause he seemed to be genuinely hurting but not stopping.

For those of you who don’t know me you should know that I am in a constant pursuit of “the fix.”  I don‘t mean drugs either, I mean I am trying to fix everything all the time.  I am always looking for the best ways to use space, the best way to store and display object, and how to make things work to their optimal potential,

This door knob is NOT my handiwork but appealed to my individual curiosity on how to rectify a problem.  I can’t say that this would be the fix I would make but someone was really thinking here.

before I get too ahead of myself I want to post this picture of Saturn and I ripping a five dollar bill in half.  This was the money we made from playing a show at his house.   I have one half that he signed and he has the other half that I signed.

The show By the way was awesome.  The bill included us, Curb Alert, and Düglas Für and Princess Sea Turtle. 

Princess Sea Turtle played first, which was a super cute delight.  Teresa, who is the princess, plays amazingly cute ukelele music around and interspersed between ragtag puppetry and slides of summer vacations with her family.  Her costume is outrageous and funny and so was her set.  I highly suggest watching this music/performance act if you ever get a chance to. 

Düglas Für is a one man, banjo machine.  It seems to me like the goal of his banjo aesthetic is to play as blistering fast as possible.  This aesthetic happens to be one of my favorites.  Saturn said he self described himself as banjo black metal, which if you don’t know black metal is extremely fast.  He also sings and screams out vocals, un-miced, over his fast paced banjoing.

I got to visit my friend Becca on my way home from Pittsburgh.  What an absolute treat every time I see this girl.  Long story short, she had these amazing dragon magnets on her fridge.  I think they are dragons at least. they could just be monsters.  I am not sure what I like about them so much.  I think they remind me of something from my childhood.  Just the aesthetic and manufacturing of them.  They really encapsulate for me the idea of the “fridge magnet.”
