Oh boy where do I start....
Any tips on developing style?
This is probably just a personal thing for me but studying the art of your favorite artist(s) can really help a lot! It’s how I learned to get mine! Of course I’m not at the end of my art style journey but I’m at a point where people can recognize my art style and say “hey that’s Mzuul!”
There are various artist I admired (still do) when I was starting drawing and I liked certain things they did. With one artist I liked the way they drew hands, another I liked the way they drew eyes, etc. eventually all these characteristics within their art helped me create my own style until the certain art characteristic stopped looking like theirs and started looking more unique. (Disclaimer: studying artists doesn’t mean tracing on top of their art, changing it a little and then posting it as your own. That’s stealing. If you need to trace on top of their art to get a better idea of how they drew it you can do that just never post it online and claim it as yours) Of course this isn’t always the case, sometimes there are people who like the way one certain artist draws. Maybe it’s simpler and easier for you to understand. There are tons of artist who have similar art styles but it’s always very unique and very distinguishable bc every artist always has their own mark. Take for example cartoonist or even animators.
What are ways to practice/improve?
REFRENCE IS YOUR FRIEND
If you want to get better at anatomy, angles proportions or expressionsthen photos on google or Pinterest will help you so much!
I did this really quickly but the first picture is me mapping out the shapes of what I’m going to focus on. The second picture is me putting the pieces together. My art style is very animated so I tend to exaggerate the poses a lot. His arms are thinner and longer and his posture is sharper.
Mouths are nice to draw too
GET OUT OF YOUR CONFORT ZONE
I’m currently at this stage of my art journey and boy do I want to die! BUT eventually you get used to it and then it’s something you can do without refrence. Here’s an example of me being more proportional:
I start off with a refrence of what I want
Then I use this refrence to picture what i want. You are the camera so things that are closer to you tend to be bigger and things that are farther tend to be smaller. (DONT BE AFRAID TO GET MESSY)
You clean it up a little until eventually it’s much more readable and you end up with something like this!
What helped keep you motivated?
SPEED PAINT VIDEOS! SPEED PAINT VIDEOS! SPEED PAINT VIDEOS! SPEED PAINT VIDEOS!
honestly I don’t know why but it’s my creative fuel, my Artist catnip. It’s also very helpful because you can see their process and especially understand the way they draw poses and anatomy. sometimes you even see them make mistakes and erase and try again and idk about you but it reassures me more knowing amazing artist struggle with art too sometimes!
I hope this helped a little bit...I know I probably didn’t make sense but this is why I’m an artist and not a writer 😔
Oh and 2 more things, there is no right or wrong way to do art and you’re always going to think your art isn’t good enough but that’s okay everyone goes through that. When I look at my art I’m physically revolted but I’m growing and so will you!💖
