the best fanfiction you've ever read was written by a woman in her 40s before she made dinner for her kids. it was written by a teenager after school when they should've been studying for a history test. and a barista came up with the idea while they cleaned the espresso machine and busser fact-checked it on their break and the post-doc edited between writing grant proposals and the nurse apologized for typos in the notes after a long shift and behind every drabble and one-shot and multi-chapter fic there is a person with a wonderful and interesting and chaotic life and it is such a privilege that we get to be apart of it because they decided to do this thing we all share, for fun.
Remember when joining fandom as a younger person meant lurking for a bit and figuring out the vibe and etiquette instead of coming in on day one and calling people weirdos for liking weirdo shit in the weirdo factory.

Replied to a recent comment on a fic that I wrote years ago and then took the time to revisit previous comments and I say this with complete sincerity:
Leaving a comment on a fic provides compounding delight. Authors will love initially receiving a comment, will love later recalling this and that particular aspect of a comment, and they will love rereading comments and being reminded how readers enjoyed the work.
Comments are not a one-time act of kindness and consideration. They keep giving.
Thank you to those who take the time to give a nice word, describe an excited reaction, point out favorite parts, and generally let it be known that not only has the work been read but it had some effect. :)
are you ever going to write that chalex architecture fic?
it's not off the table! the idea still compels me but i would be more motivated to dedicate the necessary time (again this would be like 20k) to it if i thought you guys were interested as well

reminder of the premise: charles and alex have a whirlwind romance in architecture school and get married but when charles's dad passes, their marriage doesn't survive the stress. but after the divorce, alex keeps up with charles's work and starts to notice that charles's buildings are named after little things from their relationship. so when he learns that charles was also commissioned to work on the facilities for the thai grand prix, alex agrees, ready to really talk to him for the first time in years
