Two very different entries here. I have to say it’s nice both decided to do something other than spooky for this act. Also, I had a very good chuckle at the first entry, thanks for both of your pieces, good stuff!

Shadow the Hedgehog had 326 different ways to beat the game, each with its own grimdark, edgelord name.
Tag yourself, I’m “surmounting the nightmare”
Espio’s M&SOG Rio profile is at least basically accurate, so it’s already better than those shoddy profiles from Sonic Runners. I’m pleasantly surprised... and then I’m sad at how low my expectations are.
A single entry from faceclams, thanks for joining us this act. See you all on Saturday!

Yooooo, I made this! Well, just the pencils.
Ladies and gentlemen, Ian has officially flew off into the meme singularity.
welp this got really long
Unsolicited late night rambling analysis about Espio and Lightning Lynx’s rivalry in Pre-SGW Archie Comics ahoy. The whole ninja clan drama arc didn’t sit right with me, so here I am, 6 years later, attempting to fix something that has literally zero relevance to the current plot anymore. Alright, here we go.
Jokes about their tragic forbidden inter-clan romance crack ship aside, I think they could actually have a really interesting dynamic as enemies. They were supposed to be rivals very early on, way before Heroes, but it was a pretty arbitrary choice and they didn’t have a dynamic going at all. Basically the Fearsome Foursome was just introduced to be the Chaotix’s enemies and Lightning was Espio’s designated rival because they’re both the nimble smart-mouthed one. Nothing really interesting at this point.
And then came the Iron Dominion arc where Espio got a backstory and Lightning was also retconned to be a ninja from a different clan. Making Lightning into a ninja just because Espio is also a ninja just sounded like a lazy idea at first, but it did finally introduce some conflicts into their supposed rivalry.
Lightning’s clan, the Raiju, are highly violent and warlike. They’re the designated evil clan, the one that aligned themselves with Eggman’s side, and it’s not a stretch to assume that before they joined the Legion they were probably brutal warriors conquering and pillaging. Espio’s clan, the Shinobi, were the good guys and generally painted as benevolent and wise guardians (the Gossamer and the Yagyu are... the Ravenclaw and Hufflepuff, I guess). Both Lightning and Espio are highly loyal to their clan, so that explains where their moral conflict . That’s probably all the comic intended, it’s all well and good, right?
But wait, this sounds just a little ridiculous! Who the hell’s ever heard of Lawful Good ninjas? As it was the Shinobi clan was just not very complex and interesting. They were just good guys because Espio is a game character and so they’re not allowed to be portrayed in a bad light. I’m not even talking about the mandates, it was just a matter of having clear cut, good-guys-vs-bad-guys, convenient storytelling shortcuts in a Sonic comic.
Okay, I sound a lot more exasperated than I really am. Is it a sin for a children’s comic to have simple black and white morality? Of course not. But my inner twelve-year-old knows that ninjas are kickass assassins of the night, dammit. So we’re going to head into the magical world of headcanonville.
The Shinobi Clan do still carry this noble “protector of the lands” ideal, and perhaps long ago they did uphold it, but in the present day they resort to sneaky underhanded methods of survival nearly as much as the other clans. They may even do this while still feeling justified and morally superior to other clans. (I’ve made them sound really unsympathetic here, but I still like to think of Constant Vigil as a fair and rational leader who really cared about her clan. Although in the original, the Shinobi apparently had a decent reputation even with outsiders like Monkey Khan, that would change here.)
Espio very strongly abides by the Shinobi’s moral code and was unaware of his clan’s true nature. This is because he left the clan to fulfill his duties on Angel Island at a fairly young age. He doesn’t think highly of the Raiju because of his moral code and his own bias. In return, Lightning dislikes the Shinobi for being hypocrites, and Espio in particular grates on him because he’s just so damn full of self-righteousness. For some time, Lightning mistook Espio’s genuine convictions for typical Shinobi hypocrisy, sometimes taunting him about it to his confusion. Espio probably lost that naivety when he returned to his clan. It could have been when he officially got his ninja outfit change, but his attitude was still full of righteousness for a long time after that, so I’m thinking it didn’t happen until the Iron Dominion arc.
Espio would have been pretty shaken by such a revelation, but ultimately he doesn’t turn his back on his own clan. He wouldn’t sacrifice his beliefs about being heroic and noble, but he’ll come to a better understanding about those beliefs as his own rather than something that was taught to him.
Lightning is still an antagonist, sure, but he’s really just a jerk who believes “my clan, right or wrong”, not so different from Espio in that regard. We’ve seen that they have just enough diplomacy in them to not be on each other’s throat when business demands it. Maybe at this point they both realize that their judgement of each other were based on the outdated clan beliefs they were taught, but at the same time Lightning’s animosity takes a personal turn. Both of them did nothing but follow their clan’s honour code, but Espio received the Bride of Constant Vigil’s blessing while Lightning is ignominiously banished from his clan. Methinks Lightning has to feel some resentment towards Espio for getting off with a pat on the head. If they ever had a chance to meet again after the Lockdown arc, this is basically what I want to see.
So yeah, Espio and Lightning Lynx, strong thematic parallels with one a success and the other a failure. It kind of make you feel bad about Lightning though; it’s clear that the Raiju was the only cause he gave a single crap about and would genuinely fight for, and you know that if he ever got around to enacting vengeance on Conquering Storm he’d get his ass throughly handed to him. Poor bastard doesn’t get a break.

Here it is!!! The big project I was working on the past few months! I couldn’t post it in time for the Sonic’s 23rd Anniversary for obvious school reasons… Also it’s not quite…fully finished yet, I have to wait for my friend (http://thejegsu.tumblr.com/ )’s part to be complete :> In the meanwhile,I hope you enjoy this <3
Keep on rockin’!!!
Reblogging because HOLY SHIT it hit 1000 notes! Thank you all so much!!! Glad you liked it! ;u;
This is fantastic, I think I might cry a little bit-
I love her already.
I am REALLY PUMPED for this arc okay
hello I’d like one ticket to the spicy bunny express please
did espio get a new voice actor or something?
Yeah, Matthew Mercer is his new VA. It’s not because of any executive meddling though, seems like Troy Baker has become a Big Deal in the video game voice acting world and is just too busy with his better gigs. I haven’t found any voice clips yet, so I don’t know if he's going back to the David Wills-ish voice or continuing with the rather... different direction Baker had taken.

9. Moment that made you go “aww!”
The first most emotional moment has been saved for here…as well a little stream of contemplation as to its place in the story.
StH#212′s fireplace scene, where Espio finally has to confront the rest of the Chaotix about the secrets he’s been collecting for years. As the conversation goes on, the secrets get more and more severe, with Mighty eventually storming out after his revelation, Espio breaking down and Vector being so sad. Oh, and Julie-Su’s there too like “yeah, that sucks”, but the framing of the panel just kinda pushes her to the background. But I want to thank Julie-Su for being there as it highlights just how…inconsistently this plot thread was taken.
For those who don’t know, pre-reboot Vector had some pretty severe trust issues, probably stemming back from when he was an orphan in Downunda. He didn’t trust Julie-Su right out the gate (understandable - she was a recent defector from the Dark Legion who claimed to have turned away just because she felt like fate brought her to want to be with Knuckles, all while she took over Knuckles’ friends in terms of importance in such a short space of time). This started in 1995. They were still uneasy with each other during the Egg Phoenix showdown, which happened in 2009, 14 years later.
This revelation basically revealed that Espio had technically been working with the Chaotix with ulterior motives longer than Julie-Su had ever even known Knuckles, do you think Vector would take that lightly? Apparently so since he’s not in the least bit angry in this scene. He was just a bit shocked when he knew of the Downunda accent thing. Chaotix Quest tried to amend this by actually having Vector distrust Espio during its events.
…Key word is tried. Aside from some short bits of ultimately throwaway dialogue, Vector doesn’t act like he distrusts Espio. Like, he can give Espio some lip about his plan, but he’ll still follow his plan. He’ll still have the touching close moments, and even the ending sort of makes light of the fact that they haven’t really done anything with it. Considering how StH#221-222 seemed like it was trying to set up Espio as needing to go through a similar redemption arc as Nicole did (which got resolved by #241), and this all we got in the outing that could show instead of tell? I genuinely think mandates (that got tougher around #235, not long before Chaotix Quest) derailed that plotline so it couldn’t have the ramifications that were planned. Ian’s mentioned a few times that Sonic Team seem very particular about how the Chaotix are presented, and turning the two closest members against each other seems like it would be a big no-no in that regard.
I would say that fans should be grateful that Tails and Sonic don’t have this restriction…but I don’t know if they don’t because any moments of actually turning have been under mind control, and the spat in Lost World was a brief brotherly argument.
I’m surprised you didn’t mention the infamous House of Cards arc (#178-179) at the end there, or did you disregard it on purpose? How do you feel about that arc?
