Talk by Sri Sri Ravi Shankar to Overcome fear and anxiety
Fear, anxiety and insecurity are same shades of the same color. One is slightly brown, another is dark and the third one is the darkest brown. Grey is a better color, light, medium and dark grey. Meditation, pranayama and the faith that you are not alone, faith in the Divine will definitely help. Divine faith is very abstract, at least faith in the Guru, teacher is there, Master is there, faith in yourself, faith in the universal spirit, faith in the goodness of people around. There are good people in the world. When you think everybody is wrong, everybody is bad then insecurity dawns. Suppose this is not your experience and you have found wrong people, who had deceived you all the time then at least look for good, enlightened people. Ok, now if you understand all this intellectual stuff and still anxiety comes, then what to do? Sudarshan Kriya, pranayama and meditation. After the tsunami (in South-east Asia, 2004), so many people could not sleep, they couldn’t even see the ocean. A lady witnessed her three to four children being washed away, she had a child in her arms and she couldn’t do anything for she had to look for her own self. Such incidents happened in front of so many people. So many families, somebody’s children, somebody’s wife, somebody’s parents were flooded away. All people were saying, ‘Take us anywhere but not the ocean’. And all those were fishermen. What would a fisherman do on mid land? After the earthquake, people couldn’t get into their homes. For days, people slept outside their houses on roads till our workers, our volunteers went there and taught them Pranayama, bhastrika and meditation, and then they went to their homes. That is where trauma relief, meditation, pranayama, Sudarshan Kriya helps tremendously in clarity on mind. We have hundreds and thousands of such experiences and you should go through their experiences. In a matter of two days fishermen said, ‘Give us boats and we want to go out into the ocean’. They had come out of fear, anxiety. This has happened with thousands of people. I am telling you we have such beautiful knowledge, practices that can take us out of misery, worries, anxiety, conflicts and suicidal tendencies. Just in the recent past, 20 students in Bombay alone committed suicide. In Bombay, Maharashtra, suicidal tendency among youngsters is so high that we have announced that anybody having the slightest tendency to commit suicide, call us at the Art of Living ( the NGO founded by Sri Sri Ravi Shankar ) helpline. Our volunteers and teachers are working 24x7 to help them out.
The YES+ program (Youth empowerment seminar) has helped 1000s of youth to come out of suicidal tendencies. All this happens because we don’t see life from a bigger, broader perspective; A girl got 92 percent and committed suicide for she could not get admission in the college of her choice. Because you don’t give them spiritual education, a bigger vision and ask them to only perform and perform that the pressure of performing better, pressure of marks becomes bigger than life itself. Don’t pressurize children too much, we have to give them a broader vision. Never mind you lose one year. Life is more precious than your profession, your success, your so-called success, your finance, and your prestige in society. Finance is for life and not life for finance. These all are only periphery, accessories for life and not the core of life, existence. This vision has to be brought to children.
Wake up and see everybody is caught up in their own things. Whether your financial status goes up or down, whether your relation is going good or bad, who cares in society? I tell you, nobody cares. Don’t worry about what others may think, what will my status in society be? If you are doing well they are jealous of you, if you are not doing well they don’t even count you. In either case, you don’t have to worry about others’ opinion about you, to show yourself up. And these inter cast marriages; parents are worried what others will think of their children. Who has got time to think to whom your son or daughter got married to? Whether it is in outcast or same, let it be, let it be outcast, you be more free, happy. (laughter and applause) These are silly, insignificant things that people have put in their minds and worry. Wake up and see, there is so much love in life, there is so much wisdom in life.

Set up in 1997,by Art of Livng, 5H catalyzes social transformation. The program aims to eradicate poverty, misery, disease and to ensure peace and harmony in rural and tribal areas worldwide. It works towards the development of human values, essential to create loving and happy families, cohesive communities, and harmonious relations among all people and nations.
Homes 5H helps communities with basic building needs such as homes, schools, and multi-purpose community centers.
Health Educating people about good hygiene and health practices, and healthy eating habits, particularly among children and expectant mothers.
Hygiene Achieving and maintaining good health is difficult where there are inadequate sanitation practices and lack of clean drinking water.

Harmony in Diversity Harmony in Diversity is the overall objective of the 5H Program. Through education that instills honor for diversity in nature and a sense of belonging to the world, the Harmony in Diversity segment of the 5H program creates a platform for sharing the common moral and spiritual values inherent in all religions.
The youth from the local community are encouraged to undergo the Youth Leadership Training Program (YLTP) conducted by Art of Living . This gives them the skills, motivation and abilities to initiate and lead service projects in their own villages and localities based on their needs.
The mission of the Youth Leadership Training Program (YLTP) is to revive and enrich communities through the dynamic transformation of youth. If given the tools to see clearly, young people have the vision to do something positive in their communities. They also have the energy to translate their vision into action. YLTP creates a platform for youth to make a difference in their world. Local youth are encouraged, motivated, recruited, trained extensively and then become ‘Agents of Change’. YLTP puts special emphasis on training women to become youth leaders, as change is only sustainable when women are fully participating in the process.
Not only does the Youth Leadership Training Program focus on building personality and communication skills, but it also works on the emotional and spiritual aspects of a person. Participants are inspired to volunteer for rural projects, and the fruits of the seeds sown in the classroom can be tasted by the community as a whole.
Only a strong spiritual foundation brings self-esteem and self-confidence that is unshakeable. It is this combination of personal inner strength, as well as skills and leadership training that makes the individuals become self-reliant both socially and economically, ensuring the long-term effectiveness and sustainability of this program.
5H works to:
Raise the standard of living in impoverished areas
Educate individuals at every level: mental, physical, emotional, spiritual
Create a grassroots model for progressive social change
Give every human being a chance to have a disease-free body and a stress-free mind
Inculcate human values and foster harmony in diversity
How to avoid neck pain?
Neck pain can be caused by any activity that strains your neck. You might feel pain at the base of your skull and down into your shoulders, or you might feel a knot in your neck or get a stiff neck. You may also develop a headache. Serious neck pain can limit your ability to move your head and become severe enough to limit your ability to do your job.
Take frequent breaks if you drive long distances or work long hours at your computer. Keep your head back, over your spine, to reduce neck strain. Try to avoid gritting your teeth.
Adjust your desk, chair and computer so the monitor is at eye level. Knees should be slightly lower than hips. Use your chair's armrests.
Avoid tucking the phone between your ear and shoulder when you talk. If you use the phone a lot, get a headset.
Stretch frequently if you work at a desk. Shrug your shoulders up and down. Pull your shoulder blades together and then relax. Pull your shoulders down while leaning your head to each side to stretch your neck muscles.
Balance your base. Stretching the front chest wall muscles and strengthening the muscles around the shoulder blade and back of the shoulder can promote a balanced base of support for the neck.
Avoid sleeping on your stomach. This position puts stress on your neck. Choose a pillow that supports the natural curve of your neck.
Who is Sri Sri Ravi Shankar ?
The very sight of Sri Sri Ravi Shankar is enchanting. With a long and spotless white robe encircling his slender frame, flowing hair and a trademark disarming smile, the Sri Sri Ravi Shankar is as simple and natural as his prescription for the art of living one's life to the fullest. Addressed as 'Guruji' by millions of his devotees the world over; Sri Sri Ravi Shankar presented the world with his sudarshan kriya technique and the organization—The Art of Living.
Sri Sri Ravi Shankar's ability to connect with people is perfectly effortless and his spiritual appeal irresistible. To use the words of one of his ardent followers, Sri Sri is as compassionate as Jesus, as playful as Lord Krishna and as erudite as Adi Shankara. He has this uncanny ability of helping people unburden their stress-filled minds. His invaluable sayings act as balms for wounded souls. Here's a sample: " Life is a ball in your hands to play with. Don't hold on to the ball." Guru is a unique combination of wit and wisdom, seriousness and playfulness, who would provoke you to "celebrate while you are alone, celebrate when you are with people, celebrate the silence and celebrate the noise. Celebrate life and celebrate death." It is not surprising then that, the Art of Living is all about accepting life in its totality and its motto is to "only connect". To connect people across all communities and countries with love, to turn the tides of time by reviving human values and strengthening it to make our times special. A South African member of the Art of Living teaching program says, "After the Art of Living course, racial tolerance is no longer an issue. We've moved beyond tolerance to unconditional acceptance and love. Love has no dislikes, no boundaries."
Sparks of the spiritual master's striking personality caught peoples' attention right from his childhood, which was an extraordinary one by all accounts. Ravishankar was born on May 13, 1956, in a spiritual family in Papanasam, Tamil Nadu, India. His father R. S. V. Ratnam who is well versed in Sanskrit, Tamil and English, is also a devout social worker besides being very spiritually oriented. It is an interesting coincidence that Sri Sri Ravi Shankar was born in a place named 'Papanasam', for it means—the removal of all sins. To add to it all, he was born on Shankara Jayanti, the birthday of Adi Shankara (the 8th century Vedantic philosopher and founder of the Advaita theory of Truth) and was christened on the 11th day of his birth, which also happened to be the birthday of Ramanuja the renowned preacher of bhaktior devotion. Certainly, an interesting combination of knowledge and devotion, in the consciousness of the newborn!
At the age of four, little Sri Sri Ravi Shankar was discovered chanting the shlokas of The Bhagavad Gita, and by the age of 17 he had completed his graduation in science as well as his mastery over the Vedas (Hindu scriptures). His extreme spiritual bent of mind also caught the attention of Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, the founder of the Transcendental Meditation movement, under whose tutelage Sri Sri Ravi Shankar blossomed into the spiritual figure we know so well.
In fact, soon after his college days, he came into contact with many renowned spiritual teachers and leading intellectuals. The decision to embark on an ascetic path instead of regular materialistic life was taken at this point of his life. He remained in Rishikesh, India, with Maharishi Mahesh Yogi for several years, however, before going abroad to complete his doctoral degree in the science of the Vedas.
Having completed his research, Sri Sri presented the world with the sudarshan kriya technique—a unique breathing process, which removes stress and negative toxins from the body by rejuvenating each and every cell. The technique is said to have been revealed to him during a spell of silent meditation that he had gone into for 10 long days in 1982. It was the same year that he started the Art of Living Foundation, which propagates his programs in over a 100 countries. The Foundation aims at fostering health at every conceivable human level-mental, physical, emotional as well as spiritual. Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, also, started off a number of educational and humanitarian organizations for the service and all-round upliftment of society. Besides the Art of Living Foundation, the Prison SMART Foundation, Inc., Dollar-a-Day, Art Excel and 5H Program are all the outcome of this selfsame and wholehearted commitment towards humanity. But modest soul that he is, Guruji perceives these programs to be nothing more than, seva or services for fellow human beings who are merely reflections of our own 'selves'.
According to Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, even though the world is a mixture of happiness and sorrow, it shouldn't deter any one from seeking enjoyment in whatever one does. He elucidates, "It is written in the Upanishads, the Atman, soul, is Satchidanandamaya (complete bliss). Spirituality is not boring. It is the Rasa(flavor) of life."
