Zuko has two scars. One for absence of love, and one for love.

One he got from the person who he thought loved him with all his heart and was supposed to protect him, but he actually never did. Another he got protecting the person who he didn't dare to even think would ever love him, but she actually did, with all her heart.

So symbolic. Just like everything else.

Most of the time, fans ARE very well aware of platonic relationships between characters. The reason we have fanfic is because fans have the free will and creativity to diverge from that and use their imagination. And I understand, fans get carried away a lot as well, and that’s inexcusable.

That being said, stories (the characters within them and their relationships, etc.) are also meant to be interpreted, granted not everyone’s interpretation will be good but that’s just how it goes. We have discussions, we form our own theories, we write fanfic, we do a lot of things a fandom does. Not everything will 100% stay true to its source and it’s inevitable.

Fanfiction is also getting published, I doubt everything is 100% true to its source.

Fans are entitled to ship only canon if that’s what they desire. The person who commented this is entitled to their own opinion and I’m not at all trying to convince them otherwise. I’m also aware that they’re also just simply stating and explaining their opinion. But this opinion should not dictate what every fan should ship.

These are fictional characters from a fictional piece of media, please just have fun. We all have our ways of interpreting them.

One of the things I’ve appreciated recently is how my friends (who aren’t in the shipping scene of ATLA) recommend me zutara fanfic.

It would’ve been great to get a cute little filler episode of appa’s perspective. Yk not the being captured and traumatized kind.

It’s kinda sad to see us zutara shippers needing to explain over and over again that being a fan of zutara doesn’t make us morally corrupted.

Like zutara is also a form of escapism for us and yet it’s like we need to justify liking it every damn time.

Zuko's entire arc is learning about his ancestor's colonizer ways and resolving to fix it and learn from it.

Calling him a pro colonizer means you didn't watch the series all the way through or you're just plain ignorant.

Take your pick I guess.

What angers me about bullies in a fandom is when they demonize something that fans normally/basically do in fandom. And it’s not that they’re not aware of what happens in a fandom (trust me they know it too well) but it’s just that they exhibit this behavior to ruin everyone else’s fun. They twist the narrative and then they blame you for it.

I read Nikaszko’s reddit post on the zutara nation subreddit.

Here’s an excerpt from their reddit post:

“You have every right to interpret fiction however you like. You can read the entirety of ATLA as a story about siblings lost in the snow, slowly dying of hypothermia, hallucinating a magical world built around the legend of the Avatar. That's your thing.”

Now while the post doesn’t revolve around this quote. Can we actually take a moment and see that this is a great example of just doing your thing in a fandom. THIS IS THE POINT OF A FANDOM. You think someone who confines themselves in canon, would think of something like this. No. So have fun, use your free will and imagination. Don’t be a bully, you don’t have to like everything, and just do your thing and have fun.

Who cares if siblings lost in the snow and hallucinating a fantastical world is so out of the box. That would make such a great story.

If you have been in fandoms growing up, you’ll realize that a lot of what fans have against female characters is just misogyny.

Do I think Azula deserved better? Yes.

Do I think Zuko is responsible for her? No.

Whether Azula stans want to admit it or not, Azula fucking terrorized Zuko up until their Agni Kai. I think she loved Zuko but not in a healthy or meaningful way. She continued a cycle, one she was a part of and one she helped control.

Zuko, in my opinion, could understand why she turned out that way, but that doesn't mean she's entitled to forgiveness, simply because she's a victim as well.

Also, don't mention those fuck-ass comics to me. Gene, I will always have beef with you.
