Weekend Drama is afoot, Watson!
This one goes out to r/KotakuInAction. Guys, I love ya, but pull yourselves together.
"Once more unto the breach, dear friends, once more" comes to mind, seeing as we're once again fighting back against Weekend Warriors. There's nothing much we can do to prevent this from happening, but we can at least be damned sure we control the discussion. Either by shutting it down or creating a thread with nothing but the facts and stickying that for the duration of the weekend. Take the "Muh Breitbart Texas" drama, for example. Right now, because of the lack of such a thread, we find that the shills are able to do their thing more efficiently. They're able to take over threads, upvote their own and cause avoidable drama that could easily have been avoided. #Gamergate doesn't have a problem with right-winged individuals, for example, but shills have forced Milo to come out and write this.
What happened with Breitbart Texas is this: Woman makes a distasteful (or perhaps only joking) tweet on a low-activity, few-followers account. A writer from Breitbart Texas picked up on this and wrote a story around it, seeing as the tweet involved the #BlackLivesMatter hashtag. Shills create threads over r/KotakuInAction trying to get us to go after Breitbart and Milo. Shills upvote these threads to get it to the front page. Shills are creating comments to further drive a wedge between Milo and #Gamergate. This by working several angles at once, like us standing by and letting that Breitbart Texas article slide when the shills claim it was the publication attacking a harmless woman. That and stuff like “Right-Wing politics is Evil”. Obviously, they forewent mentioning the fact that Breitbart Texas wasn’t the only publication to run such an article. Beyond the threads over at r/KotakuInAction, aGGro’s have also been “congratulating” #Gamergate over these threads and the shill’s responses to them.
What would have happened if we had a thread with all the facts: We’d know if the woman was an active member of #BlackLivesMatter, if she’s influential at BLM in real life and the context of her tweet. We’d know who the publications are that posted an article, what was in those articles and whether they were ethical or not. We’d also know who wrote these articles, thus who to possibly condemn if the articles were indeed unethical. Because when all of the facts are there, it’s harder to then work in bullshit like “Right-Wing politics is evil”, because we could clearly see it’s just a handful of journalists. We’d be able to shut down the narrative post-haste and get beyond the petty drama.
Why are shills targeting breitbart and Milo all of a sudden: Milo is doing an article on the known pedophile known as Sarah Nyberg. aGGro’s aren’t particularly keen on it coming out that they’ve been supporting a pedophile. (#IStandWithButts ring any bells?)
Ech. Just needed to get this off my chest, y’know? We’re over one year in to #Gamergate and we’re still getting suckered in by Weekend Warriors.
