Mia and me doodles, I was bored
Closing out pride month by listening to hayley kiyoko's girls like girls
like many people have said this better than me but no it IS odd that we've come to think of potatoes as so quintessentially european that their presence in historical fantasy where they're anachronistic doesn't jar. and yes people are trying to have the trappings of post-colonial europe without engaging w the icky colonialism part and yes people are neglecting to imagine what a european cuisine without potatoes would be like.
im fully in favour of 'let people have fun w their fantasy world' but is considering how the potatoes got there in the absence of colonialism not a fun exercise? maybe every year the dragon riders go on a great transatlantic potato pilgrimage
perhaps a good way to sum up the issue here is:
if you put potatoes in your medieval european style fantasy world people will by and large not find it jarring and accept it as a normal fantasy trope
if you put, say, black people in your medieval european style fantasy world a whole demographic of people will get very angry and accuse you of breaking their immersion
this is in spite of the fact that black people were a lot more common in medieval europe than potatoes.

Happy Birthday, @wereadtoliveathousandlives! 🥳🥰
How many order tickets have you written me at The Claw? I know your handwriting. That bottle shattered at the Vigil, just like the barometer shattered in my apartment. Both times I felt something, and I know you felt it, too. And both times we were close enough to…
some hyper famous artists like Van Gogh transcend overratedness and become underrated because they're so normalized. Like I'll look at a van Gogh and I'm like wait this really is amazing you guys don't get it
Shakespeare is like this
Every time I see a Van Gogh that’s not one of his better known pieces it absolutely blows me away
Have you seen this shit my liege? smh unreal

hey it’s @yumomia !! i have a question: as the top kuki supporter, what do you think of her name? me personally, i don’t like it, since kuki sounds like “kooky” in english, which means crazy. it would make more sense for her if she had a “Pinkie Pie” personality from my little pony, but she’s very straight-laced, no-nonsense, so it doesn’t fit the tone in my head. however, i’m a native english speaker and i know this show is worldwide with a ton of translations so i was wondering if this is just an issue for me.
i asked specifically because i had hoped to add her into my rewrite. after having watched season 3, i love her as a character and hoped to find a good place for her to go. and i know you like her so i hope the problem with her name is just a me issue, because otherwise i was thinking of changing it to Kuri lol
thank you for all the fun comics! love your art style so much!!
I had no idea about this similarity, I'm not fluent in english, I only know some basic things o-o
It's ironic that you say you don't like it because I love it, I think the name is very cute because it reminds me of the word "Cookie", the word cookie and the name Kuki are pronounced the same way in my country, that's why I found it very cute XP
It makes her name have a sweet and gentle meaning to me 🍪
I have a similar problem with Mo's name, in my language "mo" can be a loving way to call your boyfriend/girlfriend, so it gives me a weird feeling XD
Thank you for the question and the kind words ❤️
Hi @yumomia I wanna add my two cents in this ask. @lululaozi sorry for barging in!
Long essay under cut:
OMG THIS IS SUCH A GREAT TAKE!! i studied mandarin in college, but we never got any mandarin names or anything like that so it never crossed my mind that that could be something that would happen! i love all this analysis so muchhh
It's like the English naming convention too! I have a friend who has a bunch of siblings and all their names start with Jo. Like Joanna, John, Jolene, Josephine, Jordan, etc.
And another friend who has five kids in that family overall, and all their names rhyme. Ex: Belle, Giselle, Marcel, Daniel, Michelle. So they're sharing without being conventional yk.
It's just that East Asian families are pretty much all like Confuscianism, work hard! So they also imbibe their hopes of what their children will become or other special meaning. Additionally, because a Chinese person's name is made of up normal, conversational Chinese words.
Like the example I gave of 杰明: 杰 which can mean a lot of things but includes excellent and heroic, and 明 means clear. So in a context where you're speaking normally, a sentence look be like:
你的儿子好聪明,真的好杰出啊!
Which translates to:
Your son is so clever, it really is remarkable!
Because Chinese characters is all about the context and sentence it is used in! So 杰 (excellent hero) becomes 杰出 (remarkable) and 明 (clear) becomes 聪明 (clever).
And if I tweaked the name 杰明 (excellent and wise hero) to 凯杰 (victorious hero), it becomes a whole new meaning because 凯 means victory!
