He shakes his head, chuckling. “I’ll be sure to warn you,” he says, smile settling on his face. “As long as you see fit to do the same. Ten years was far too long for my liking– why didn’t you call sooner?” He pretends to look hurt, but it can’t last long, and he snorts.
He can’t remember the last time he’s felt this…happy. Is happy the word for it? He’s felt it so few times he don’t honestly know. But whatever the case may be, Mantis – Luka – is here, with him again. And he’d probably tear apart anyone who tried to take him away. Make up for his mistakes. Luka had always been the one to protect him, and it was far past time to return the favor.
He shakes his head again, reaching out to brush fingers on the other man’s shoulder, reassuring himself the Russian was real, still there, and attempting an awkward gesture of comfort in return. They were together again, and one of the phantom pains that had been tormenting him since he woke from the dead had faded into a memory. “So dare I ask what you’ve been up to?” He asks, still smiling slightly.
“Well, I would have called. Thing is, I couldn’t get a signal,” he says, chuckling briefly himself, although it sounds more like a cough than a laugh.
Mantis can feel Liquid’s happiness emanating off him, bright as light drifting through a windowpane. It’s a surprisingly pleasant sensation, considering the other man never was a particularly content person to begin with.
God, this is what he’s come to? Feeling sappy about another person being alive and well? This was Eli he was talking about, but still...It feels wrong, almost. Like this is something he doesn’t deserve. And that’s probably true, considering he couldn’t even find Eli for ten years, let alone try and contact him.
He resists the urge to flinch away from the minimal contact, the twinge in his brain returning like the scar of an old wound. Not painful, but sore. It’s been a long time, and the space where Eli used to be (where he is again), has been suddenly filled, emotions and the sensations washing in like the tide.
“What have I been up to? Waiting, mostly. And searching for anyone else who...made it out.” He averts his gaze for a moment. “Like I did.”
