But nah, I know I will be accused of cherry picking, and yeah I know there are many manga moments that show Maka being more simmilar to the Anime Gif in demeanor, but I dunno, I think the point still stands:
I think it's another reason where the manga falters in my opinion, people dont often discuss it, but to me it just seems Maka is reduced to this weird "uwu kawaii" thing (lol dont even how to call it without ruffing too many feathers) - and people will try to respond "Well shenis cutesy in the anime too!" , and I think thats the point: cute vs "kawaii" - yeah its a weird way of describing it, but its the best dichothomie I can come up with - the first is not creepy, like seeing your kids find a new bug and excitedly showing it to you like its the biggest discovery in the world, get what I mean?
While "kawaii" is one reason why I dont really consider myselfs an "anime and manga fan" in general (yeah Im full of contradictions dont gotta tell me lol, but maybe thats why its post anime...not...)
Like you know what I mean - like these weird idol anime with overly glossy eyes and shroedingers "is it supposed to be cute and childish or sexualised* tone (maybe I'm spoiling to much the iceberg and my negative opinion of SE Not...)
Like its not even me trying to say "Oh I hate all cutesy stuff", nah I genuinely like the Maka Crona moments for that fact, but ,I atleast I hop,e there are different from the standard anime thing which has those creepy undertones like all these "uwu senpai wants to sleep in the same bed with me??!" like you know these scenes arent written for girls of the depicted ages but for and by 40 year old greassy guys with guilty consiousnesses...
But I dunno, even beyond my own paranoai of if a piece of media is supposed to appeal to a certain "demographic", I just think there is something lost in manga Maka, especially compared to her earlier charachterization and the animes continuation of it.
I think the last time where you really saw it in the manga was around the Arachne madness chapter where she confidently just stretched out her arm to Soul. Idk. People will probably think that I mean "wow, you want Maka to be some fearless badass!!?" and nah, I dunno, maybe Im just fighting phantoms, but I dunno I think there is something there, mayb even something my own stupid story failed to capture, but that what made the whole "bravery" thing at the end work.
I like the idea of Death the Kid having a walk-in closet full of pristine branded clothes (honestly a Special kind bc he values style and comfort). He’s rich and lives in a Mansion with multiple rooms. Suits are his casual attire and he’s just that type of person. He never needed a material thing that he couldn’t just get. He can buy that shit. If a dress shirt ceases being symmetrical? Ditch it. Buy a new one. His customized blazer got damaged? Replace it. Easy. No son of Death would wear anything less than perfect.
Meanwhile, Blackstar is the type to keep the same five pairs of clothes until they’re literally breaking down at each seam.
Tsubaki even has to beg him to buy new stuff, or gift it to him on birthdays (even those ones get worn down for years, too). He grew up under Sid’s care and i bet he never had the luxurious life Kid had. Maybe Sid bought him clothes out of his own salary as a teacher and Blackstar knew that, so he treasures the clothes he gets. Assassin clothes, hand wraps, tank tops, sleep attire, old hand-me-downs get cut up and recycled into bandages or wraps for training, etc. Maybe he knows how to sew because he wanted to keep wearing a specific star-filled tank top Sid got him for his 13th birthday, so he asked Nygus to teach him. He wasn’t good at it at first but hey, practice eventually makes perfect. When he goes to missions and fights, he repairs the damage in his clothes. He’ll keep wearing the same shit until it gives up on him and even then, he really doesn’t want to let it go. Shoes are his worst nightmare because all his running wears it down fast.
It’s easy to write him off as a slob. Blackstar wore nothing formal; he looked like shit when he tried, too, slobbering for food when he attended the Academy’s founding anniversary. The boy didn’t know class, or finesse, or elegance. Everything he did screamed fucking reckless and immature. Obnoxious. It showed in his clothes, tattered as they are—because why else would it be so worn down if he was a careful man?
Being friends doesn’t exactly erase the impression, but it opens a bridge to ask. When Kid finally asks Blackstar why he circles through the same two tank tops whenever the group hung out outside the school, he’d say he liked the star designs. It suits me, he’d brag, and Kid is just jealous of his great clothing sense. Typical. But Maka eventually, secretly, tells Kid it’s just a special top because he’s had it since the both of them were twelve (everyone knows Blackstar would rather eat dirt than admit to being attached to things). Sentimental and Blackstar didn’t feel like they belong in the same sentence, but that thought felt odd now that he knew. Especially after he sees him discreetly check the stitches after an intense basketball match.
Death the Kid would notice every new stitch on Blackstar’s uniform after a mission since then. From afar, you don’t see it because it’s hidden well, but up close (maybe when they’re sparring, or sitting next to each other, or that day when Blackstar carried him through Excalibur’s wretched cave—though he foolishly shrugged that off). He can see it if he paid attention long enough, if Blackstar doesn’t move around too much for a moment. Stitches on top of old fixes, or the odd bits of his tank top turning out to be patches he couldn’t really hide. When he points it out again, they’re alone together and Blackstar happily shows it off (“I’m the best at everything, including sewing! Marvel at my craft!”). Kid admits ti thinking he’s a slob, and then the man would proceed to poke and prod at him for his branded stuff. There’s a reason why everyone saw him as a spoiled brat, after all; on the walk home that day, he ponders if he really is. (Liz and Patty say yes.)
Maybe it only really hits Kid, how much he’s really changed, when he lends Blackstar some pajamas after a gnarly night fighting against kishin eggs. Blackstar refused until he shoved the soft, flawless cotton in the man’s hands—told him to shut up and What, so the great Blackstar can’t handle wearing neat pajamas? He’s only ever seen him in tank tops but the sleeves didn’t seem to be the source of Blackstar’s discomfort. Having a spontaneous sleepover with the others, having Patty cause chaos in the name of fun—their antics eventually result into a rip of threads that only Blackstar seemed to be startled by. He apologizes as he returns it the next day, early in the morning, as neatly folded and packed in a paperbag as he could. Maybe Tsubaki did the folding. Blackstar is shit at folding clothes or wearing stuff that weren’t creased to hell and back.
But by then, even if there’s a stitch on only one sleeve, Kid keeps it. Seeing it makes him smile. The damage was repaired with a star-shaped stitch—(how did he even do that?), but he doesn’t wear it yet. He tells himself it would drive him insane, knowing something is off, but he hangs it with his other clothes. He didn’t need to replace it this time; Blackstar fixed it, and it wasn’t ruined. It’s better.
Death the kid headcanons cause he’s my favoriteee 💕💕💕💕
There’s a piano in Gallows manor , i bet good money kid knows how to play it. He probably had a lot of free time growing up so he learned.
Please let soul and him play a duet it would be so real and true omg
Gothic literature. His favorite book is “The Portrait of Dorian Gray”
As for music he likes a lot of things. I mainly see him listening to The Smiths, The Cure, Don McLean, Lesley Gore, The Mamas & The Papas, Nancy Sinatra..etc. He likes anything
He has a super old record player that’s his prized possession. It’s a crank handle one and he has all different vinyls from modern music to old jazz
I think he understands his status as an immortal god and would be scared to become attached to anyone romantically. The thought of losing his friends scares him too, even though he knows they can’t cheat death.
Okay wow sorry anyway I think he’d love old horror movies too “Little Shop of Horrors” is his favorite
I HC him as AroAce but he definitely favors men. I just don’t think he knows it.
Due to not being a real human his body temperature is super low. Which is how he’s able to wear a full suit in Nevada in June.
Definitely the social one of the group. Is able to small talk with anyone.
Owns an n64 (he plays smash bros with the group , he mains yoshi)
I LIKE TO THINK HE GETS THERAPY TO MANAGE HIS OCD HES A GOOD BOY HE JUST NEEDS HELP.
Patty asked if he’d still be her meister if she was a worm he said no
Okay that’s all I have please share with me..if you even care…
just finished rewatching soul eater. crona maka and soul black blood trio. cannot stop thinking about the ways they differ and overlap
crona and ragnarok are two separate entities. ragnarok is an entire separate being that lives inside of crona. they have different wants and needs and personalities, but they do both value their body's survival, even when they're at each other's throats. as a pair they are the most separate and individual. their relationship is a constant struggle due to their circumstances (but i feel like they could definitely work it out)
the little demon is a separate entity within soul, but it's exclusively a mental presence. he's part of soul in the way that he's a manifestation of soul's "inner darkness" and his fear of losing control over that. the little demon is constantly trying to convince or trick soul into letting go and giving in to the catharsis of violently losing all composure. soul and the little demon definitely dont have the same working-together relationship as ragnarok and crona, where they choose to use the black blood to the body's advantage. the little demon wants this relationship (albeit one where he has full control), but soul is adamant that he alone retains control of his mind, body, and actions. he cares extremely how he acts and that he is doing what he feels is right, correct, or just the best option for him personally.
the little demon isnt technically wrong! the black blood does what is promised: keeps maka from feeling fear that kept her thinking rationally against an irrational opponent. it was an important thing to take advantage of. unfortunately the little demon is a little demon and doesnt actually want whats best for soul.
maka's black blood presence is an instinctual, involuntary self-defense mechanism. she's literally dissociated as it kicks in, and it disappears when she comes to. she lives entirely unaware (or at least, we're meant to believe she is) that she's part weapon. that's some pretty intense repression. maka is shown to go fucking apeshit multiple times, usually when her emotions can no longer be put in check. when fight or flight kicks in and she chooses to fight. maka's scythes are barely organized or thought out in any way, they just appear and disappear as theyre needed. when shes truly cornered by asura they explode all around her in a desperate attempt to skewer him. maka's black blood presence isn't another entity the way crona and soul's are, but it serves the same purpose for survival.
i absolutely love treating soul and maka's situations similarly to crona and ragnarok's and i feel like its an under-explored idea. join me
If you don't like it or have any problems about drinking feel free to ignore.
It's nothing explicit, but just in case
.
.
.
Black Star is the kind of guy who everyone thinks is absolutely drunk because he's doing a lot of shit during the party but he actually had only 1 shot and a lot of soda.
Kid is the one who has a very high alcohol tolerance but usually refuses to drink anyways. He doesn't really have a preference for flavor but takes wine to look classy. Once he gets drunk he just wants to sleep.
Soul can drink decently but not tequila. Tequila destroys him surprisingly fast.
Liz and Patty are really heavy drinkers, but they don't actually drink a lot. Patty doesn't enjoy the flavor of alcohol and Liz has the interiorized fear of becoming like their mother.
Tsubaki is regular. She likes fruity drinks but not extremely sweet.
Maka doesn't drink. She has trauma and promised herself never drink alcohol or smoke.
i am legally obligated to think of a band AU for every piece of media i enjoy
silly little brain was imagining a Soul Eater band AU (as one who is normal about things often does) and i had a few thoughts and i think i will ramble about it a little bit here to make more thoughts. i think since they'd have such a large group, they kind of swap out/tap in for certain songs so they're rarely all playing at the same time. they all probably play a couple instruments because of this (with a few exceptions) and there's just a fun assortment that they've got going on and i also think that would make some of their songs sound drastically different since it would be like a different combination of people playing. overall, i feel like they're pretty gritty and punk, but they've probably got a wide span between more electronic and maybe even hyperpop adjacent stuff and like "original" punk and rock stuff. i think it'd really depend on who was playing.
some of the instruments are obvious. Soul is legally required to play the keyboard/synth/whatever keys exist, though he probably knows how to play the most instruments out of the group so even though he's mainly piano, he can play everything and he'll add his own little flair to it.
my brain is yelling at me that Tsubaki would play the bass. idek why but it appeared in my thoughts and i think that that's the gospel truth that Tsubaki would play the bass. i feel like she would also play some wildcard instrument like a violin/viola or flute or idk like an oboe and when she breaks that out you know the song is gonna go crazy.
now, i think Black☆Star and Kid are vocals, whether they're singing solo or together and they're probably "on deck" the most, though they probably do back off at certain points. Liz is also a vocalist (i feel in my bones that she'd be like a "talk singer" or like an ashnikko type thing where she's AGGRESSIVE with her singing) but my brain is telling me she's on the guitar a lot and wouldn't be singing most of the time. she uses a lot of cool guitar picks and she likes throwing them out into the audience and people would throw picks back at her to use (and she would use them). when all three of the singers are on at the same time, the balance would be insane and i can't imagine which ranges each of them would cover (Liz is a solid mid-range voice, but i can't decide who would be higher and lower registers between Black☆Star and Kid).
Patty would be Exclusively drums and percussion and random noise maker and she's damn good at it, she probably also does fun count offs for all them when they'd start playing. Crona also plays the drums and i feel like they would also play bass, very different vibe from Patty's drumming but still a banger (lol banger, drums, ha). Patty is more "lots of noise and funky combinations" while Crona is more complicated rhythms during the solely instrumental parts. struggling with Maka b/c i think it's funny that she canonically does not know how to do any sort of music, so i think she'd probably mainly be sound and organization help since there's so many of them. HOWEVER, i feel like she'd also be really good at having one of those soundboards and balancers and all that shit (thinking about those ones w/ the square light up keys and also the ones w/ the sliders and switches and whatnot) so she'd be in the back of the ensemble with all her little boards and buttons and be putting all the effects over their music. she could also maybe sing, but i'm talking backup vocals b/c she probably doesn't want to sing a lot, she likes her little tasks.
they are all probably INSANE on stage. jumping, doing flips, handstands, cartwheels, Black☆Star definitely crowd surfs, they're throwing t-shirts into the crowd ALL THE TIME. i'm imagining a situation where they have specifically placed speakers and boxes on stage some of them can literally be elevated above the others while they're playing or singing. none of them are dressed similarly but somehow it still works and you can obviously tell they're in a band. i think their band legally needs to be called Soul Eaters (or Death Sycthes??? Death Weapons???? something like that)
A little under half way through re reading the soul eater manga and decided to design so funny guys. A weapon and technician duo! Her uncle is her weapon, a giant harpoon gun! (He does not trust anyone else to fight for or protect her)
