Okay! So, unprompted af, I’m gonna tell y’all about how I met my found-family Pakistani brother from Australia.

When I went to travel Aus on a Work&Holiday visa, I went without much of a plan, just kind of figured I’d go with the flow. First night there I decided to get lost in the city of Melbourne, just walk around a bit, saw a 7-11, figured I’d take a snoop inside this chain store I only knew by name up to that point. 

Probably looking as star struck as I felt, staring about, the cashier guy goes, “Do you… need help?” Of course, me being ridiculously honest, I just go, “No, I’ve just never been to a 7-11 before,” and he went, “WHAT?! No way! Where are you from?!” 

(Obviously, there was the short ‘oh god, do I tell him? is it safe here?’ internal argument, but he looked friendly, so I went with my gut) “Israel,” I said and his eyes got so big, you guys. He got so excited and said, “OH wow! I’ve never met an Israeli before!” of course I then had to ask him where he was from (Pakistan) and funny enough, I’ve never met a Pakistani before! (It was my first trip east, I had only visited Europe or America before that)

Anyway, he goes, “Hey, you guys have that… that book, don’t you?”

That book?   “You mean…. the Bible?”

“Yeah! yeah, that one! Can you guys, you know, read it?” 

“Uhm… yes? It’s in Hebrew.” 

He made this face like I just fell through the ceiling, to which I just responded with a smile and started reciting the first paragraph of the Bible. 

I swear, he jumped a whole meter up in the air and started waving his hands about, shouting, “Wait, you guys speak the same language as the Bible?!” 

Laughing, surprised I kinda just blurted out, “WHAT DID YOU THINK WE SPEAK, CANTONESE?!” 

What he said next kind of threw me off, because I never thought about it before, just how fascinating it is that we can read the exact same scrolls that were written over three thousand years ago, something not every religion-based nation can. He said, “I had no idea. We can’t read the original version of the Quran, since it’s in Arabic. We don’t speak Arabic. It’s crazy that you can understand the original text of your religion.” 

It is kind of crazy, and it’s something I will forever be thankful for to those who pushed to revive the Hebrew language, and made it what it is today, a usable, modern language, that still correlates with the old script.

I’ve never taken it for granted, but it also more clearly put it in perspective for me, kind of highlighted just how important it is to keep this language and religion alive. I’m not a religious person at all, but I do have an appreciation for the history of it, and I do believe it’s something worth teaching future generations about.  

So… yeah. Anyway. There’s at least one Pakistani out there that can curse at you in Hebrew, just so you know.
