so i've been thinking a lot about what Christianity does for the individual.
i left Christianity some 8 years ago now because i felt that being a fundamentalist was the only true way to be a Christian (due to being raised fundamentalist) and obviously fundie doctrines did not align with my queer, leftist, progressive self which i was just growing into at that time. but, as i've said countless times to my irl friends, losing my faith was capital B Bad for my mental health.
now, i'm not saying that it would've been so much better for me down the line if i had kept being this restrictive, conservative Christian. but the way i lost my faith, the manner of it, completely stripping back and going from absolutely believing in God to being atheist, shook my world.
there's something being Christian or belonging to any religion for that matter, does for you. it can give you this sense of connection to a bigger meaning, like the things you do matter, you matter. for me, it was an anchor. i was certainly already mentally ill, perhaps from my early childhood. but being religious gave me the strength to keep things together. i was a soldier for Christ, using prayer as therapeutic self-expression and a means of catharsis. i managed to hold it all together because i felt held. Being Christian made me feel like i was sitting right there in the palm of God's hand, and i truly believed that because of that, ultimately, everything will be okay.
i'm still in the process of finding my way back to Christianity. trying to find the theology that feels less like the trauma of fundamentalism and more like home. the reason i decided to even make this journey is (and this may be considered blasphemy by some), i do believe that religion is the opiate of the masses, at least in a sense. no, i'm not saying we should let religion keep us from class consciousness. what i mean is just as opiates can be part of useful and necessary medical therapy, religion is a great way to feel more connected with the world if you tend to curve in on yourself.
religion, any religion, is optional. i do not believe you need to be Christian to be a good person, i'm going to go out on a limb and say most queer/progressive Christians don't believe this. i only know that personally, i need Christ. i've needed him since the day i was born. and being far from him fucked with my soul, and i don't want to reexperience that.
i know, firsthand even, that Christianity can be a source of trauma for a lot of people. but it can also be a source of healing, and i wish we would all be more open to exploring that.
date your friends - by which i do not mean you must literally date your friends but by which i mean go out to dinner with your friends, buy your friends flowers, tell your friends you love them, write your friends love letters, play your friends songs that make you think of them, help your friends with moving and doctors appointments and listen to their worries and joys. love one another so entirely and i promise the world will feel so much brighter and you will have a community full of love

Random Dragon Ball thoughts because the Moro arc anime announcement got people discoursing over Bardock again but there are some things I wanna bring up. Disclaimer: I like Super Bardock but I also like Z Bardock for what he's meant to be for his story.
Anyways: some folks who express their dislike for Z Bardock seems to be confusing "character as a narrative device" with "character as a person" when they talk about why they don't like him when what Z Bardock as a person is the whole point of his character. He's an average Saiyan (or at least how writers at Toei at the time portray the race as a whole) tragically walking to his doom with his only solace being that his son will grow up to face his killer. Those detractors don't get that Z Bardock to his fans is considered a stand out for being an absolute asshole.
Bardock learning a lil bit about caring about people a lil too late before his own death is pretty much what Super Bardock also gets except he was allowed enough time to send his son away to safety as the last of the very few good things he has done for other people in his life before his death. But that similarity isn't part of the point. What I want to talk about is the claim that it undermines Goku's story arc in the Saiyan Saga, which I disagree because not only does he not remember his own parents but by the time he remembers em, he has long since cared about that stuff. It doesn't even undermine grandpa Gohan's effect on his life since Goku would actually grow up in a healthier environment where he can truly become a good person. The social environment on planet Vegeta couldn't provide that regardless of how "good" his parents are as people. The average Saiyan treat genocide like a 9-5 and they hung out with friends after work. It's a thing we see in Z also.
i’ve also thought for a long time that actually seeing who Z bardock is in all his mass murdering space pirate glory kind of makes it an even more beautiful testament to the kind of person goku is that he sees who the saiyans are, compares them against freeza, and decides that not only are the saiyans still worthy of remembrance and empathy just like everyone else. but that goku actively takes up the mantle of the final, greatest voice of the saiyans, vowing to honor his people not in spite of but BECAUSE of the fact that he’s been given the chance to grow beyond the sins of his father.
it makes vegeta’s gradual growth into adopting that same mindset while being the true final torchbearer of the people who were raised in saiyan culture (not to mention their royal family) hit even harder as well. seeing Z bardock and his squad being those people gives you a visceral sense of buu saga vegeta’s struggles between the two mutually exclusive people he feels he “ought” to be. Z bardock makes the moment hit so much harder when he feeds the freeza-era saiyan inside him more than he ever has before and realizes “this is not who i am, this is not who i should be, this is not who i want to be. this is who i’ve grown beyond and who i must do everything in my power to prevent my son from becoming.”
