nanamigatari:
“You misunderstand me,“ Nanami spoke, a tiny smile on her normally expressionless face. While it would have been a demure gesture used by any other young woman, the way her eyes shut as she continued on gave off an underlying hint of smugness. “I’ll be putting these dandelions to use. They may not be as popular a plant to cultivate on their own, but that doesn’t make them completely useless. A plant that has no use for the need at hand and whose growth hampers the cycle of another plant… I suppose what counts as a weed is decided by who does the plucking.“
She remained smiling, as though that explained it all- to her, it was mere fact. Her way of life since birth.
“When you’re as strong as me, you can decide many things.“
The as of now unnamed man wanted to know more about her views, given this new test he was proposing. He literally held the lives o the insect and arachnid in the palms of his hands. From the looks of their patterns, a Painted Lady butterfly and a flower spider. Neither received more given thought than the other.
“My, you really like pushing decisions on others, don’t you?“ Nanami returned, peeking at him through her lashes. “The predator or the prey… You could kill both and nothing would happen. Killing neither would go the same way. Life would continue on as though nothing were to happen. One less butterfly or spider, but another would break free from its cocoon or hatch from an egg sack. Life would find a way to replace and recover. It’s almost crueler than death.”
There was hardly any sympathy in her voice as she went on, toying with the bunch clenched between her fingers- was she even speaking to him anymore?
“We’re no exception either. I could cut you down where you stand and I’m sure nothing grand would come of it. You might make good food for wild animals though.“
Now she was.
“Sorry, sorry. I hope I wasn’t rude. I have trouble understanding normal people. I’m a special boy, you see...”
Everything Doma said reeked of insincerity, but this was especially sarcastic. He was practically rolling his eyes, with the many colors in his eyes it practically created a kaleidoscope. He let go of the spider and the butterfly, and fell back. He just sat there cross legged in the dirt with no regard at all for how dirty he was getting his trousers.
He only felt a little bit disappointed that he didn’t get to see her tear off a butterfly’s wings, or pluck a spider’s legs off one by one. He was sure she would look pretty doing it.
Was she. Was she going to kill him? Doma burst into tears. They were tears of joy. “Y-you’re a really kind person aren’t you? You know life is painful. Anything I would never want to lose will be lost. Anything worth wanting will be lost the moment I obtain it. There’s nothing worth pursuing at the cost of prolonging a life of suffering, and that’s why you offered to kill me.”
Doma was smiling so wide all of his teeth were showing. He unconsciously started to chew on his fingers in order to contain his excitement. He liked interesting things. Shiny things. Bells. Whistles. He liked things that distracted him. He liked pretty girls when they danced. He liked pain sometimes too, because pain was a feeling at least, it wasn’t numbness. He’d do anything to feel.
“Ah, but one thing. Killing me and leaving me for someone else to eat is so unfriendly. If you’re going to eat me, then swallow me whole yourself. We’re already friends after all... umm... uhhhhh.... whoever you are.”
Doma smiled awkwardly. He always forgot to ask for the name.
