It lingered in the halls, in the glances of courtiers who lowered their voices when you passed, in the way no one spoke his name too loudly. It is as if grief itself were something sacred, something that might shatter if disturbed. You felt it most beneath the vaulted ceilings of the Red Keep, where memory clung like smoke that would not clear.
“The realm needs this.”
The words had been repeated to you so often they had lost all meaning.
“The Prince needs this.”
“House Targaryen cannot afford division.”
So you stand once more before the court, draped not in mourning black but in silks befitting a bride, and prepare to wed the man who killed your husband.
Not by malice. Not by intent.
But by his hand all the same.
You do not look at Maekar Targaryen at first. Your gaze remains forward, fixed somewhere beyond the septon, beyond the crowd. somewhere safer. Somewhere untouched.
“Do you take…”
“I do,” you answer, your voice steady in a way that almost feels like betrayal.
There is no tremor in his voice when he repeats the words. No stumble. No hesitation.
That is the strangest part.
The court watches with the same hungry reverence they had shown years ago when you wed Baelor Targaryen— your Baelor, heir to the Iron Throne, beloved by all who knew his name.
That wedding had been joy.
You remember laughter echoing through these same halls. Music spilling into the streets of King’s Landing. The way his hand had felt in yours: warm, certain, yours.
You had been golden then. Untouchable.
You had thought nothing in this world could rival the love you shared.
Nothing could replace it.
Yet here you stand, testing the very memory of it.
The vows fall from your lips, the same words you once spoke with unrestrained joy. Now they feel heavier. Softer. As though each one carries something buried beneath it.
A ghost threads through every promise.
When you finally look at Maekar, he is already watching you.
Not boldly. Not expectantly.
Carefully.
There is something restrained in him, something held back so tightly it feels as though it might break free if given the chance. His shoulders are set, his jaw tight, but his hands, when they find your arms, are gentle.
Too gentle.
As though you might shatter beneath his touch.
Or as though he does not believe he has the right to touch you at all.
“Are you–” he begins, too quietly for the court to hear. His voice falters, just slightly. “Are you certain?”
The question hangs between you.
Not about the marriage.
About everything.
You meet his gaze, and for a moment, you see it, clear as day.
Guilt.
Not the kind that fades. Not the kind that can be reasoned away.
The kind that roots itself deep and refuses to leave.
You give a small nod.
“I am here, am I not?”
It is not an answer.
But it is enough.
When his lips meet yours, the world does not stop. There is no rush of feeling, no warmth like you remember.
Only gentleness.
Hesitation.
Reverence.
His grip is careful, his touch restrained, as though he is holding something that was never meant to be his.
We both know.
Even as your lips press together, even as the court watches and bears witness, you both know to whom your heart first belonged.
And perhaps always will.
When you pull away, you offer him a smile.
It is soft. Practiced.
Familiar.
It is the same smile you had given Baelor as he lay dying in your arms. The one you forced through tears, the one that told him, without words, that everything would be alright.
You had not known then that his sight had already left him.
That your smile had been for a darkness he could no longer see.
Maekar does not return it.
Not fully.
His mouth twitches, as though he tries, but his gaze drops instead, to your hands, to the space between you, anywhere but your eyes.
“Your Grace,” someone calls.
The court stirs.
The moment ends.
But the weight does not.
You step forward together, side by side, your hands entwined for all to see. His fingers are warm, steady but there is tension in them, a quiet restraint, as though he is afraid to hold you too tightly.
Or afraid to let go.
“I never meant–”
His voice is barely more than a breath, lost beneath the murmur of the court as you walk.
You tighten your grip on his hand, stopping him.
“I know.”
The words come quickly. Too quickly.
You have said them before. To yourself. To others.
You repeat them now like prayer.
“It was battle,” you continue, softer now. “Chaos. It was not deliberate.”
He exhales, but it is not relief.
It is something heavier.
“I see it,” he admits. “Every time I close my eyes.”
You do not ask what.
You already know.
There are moments when the light strikes his face just so, when you see it too.
The crack of metal.
The way Baelor Targaryen fell.
The way the world split open.
And in those moments, you mourn all over again.
“We will not speak of this here,” you say quietly, not unkindly.
He nods.
Because this is not a place for grief.
This is a place for appearances.
You reach the end of the hall, turning to face the court once more.
Prince and Princess.
Husband and wife.
A united front.
Your hand remains in his, your fingers tightening just slightly… not out of affection, not yet, but out of something else.
Understanding.
Shared ruin.
“We will endure this,” you murmur, so only he can hear.
Maekar glances at you then, truly looks at you for the first time since the ceremony began.
There is something in his expression you do not expect.
Not just guilt.
Not just grief.
But something quieter.
Something almost like gratitude.
“Yes,” he says, voice low. “We will.”
You stand there together before the court, hands entwined.
Not in love.
Not yet.
But in solidarity.
Two survivors of the same tragedy.
Two penitents bound by the same sin, one real, one imagined.
Your fingers tighten around his.
As though, if you let go, you might both fall apart.
As though holding on is the only thing keeping either of you standing.
And so you do.
You hold on.
And you push it down.
And you pray the weight of it does not break you.
— Author’s Note: I had to write something for these two fine old men. They have completely invaded my every thought that I couldn’t hold myself from writing something.
Inspired by Lizzy McAlpine’s song “Pushing it down and praying” let’s just say this is my interpretation of what that song means, seeing as many are arguing or talking abt it.

Not silent— but the kind of quiet that made the air feel heavier. The kind that pulled your thoughts out of hiding and laid them bare.
Lando sat on the floor by the window, hoodie loose, feet bare, glass of something half-finished beside him. His phone was warm in his palm from how long he'd been holding it, doing nothing but scrolling.
It had been hours since the comments started flooding his lando.jpg post.
"YN’s in Monaco??"
"Saw someone who looked like her near Larvotto 👀"
"Why do I feel like they’re both pretending not to be in the same city rn lol"
He hadn’t answered. Not one. But he'd seen them all.
Then there was your post— lunch with your cousin. No geotag. Just vibes. But the background? The chairs? The salt-and-pepper shakers? He knew that café. Everyone local did.
Still, denial clung to him like an old hoodie. Familiar. Comforting. False.
Until he made a mistake.
He clicked on the last slide. The cousin. A quick username check led him to a profile. Private— obviously— but the bio had a Monaco pin. Lando hesitated. Then sent a request. It was stupid, maybe, but curiosity itched at his skin like a rash.
When your cousin accepted thirty minutes later, Lando dove in.
A recent post. And under it, a comment from someone:
"is she still playing hard to get?"
There it was.
Undeniable.
He leaned back against the wall and stared at the screen, lips parted slightly in disbelief. His pulse quickened— not with excitement, but with this weird mix of nerves and... need. He didn’t know what to do with himself.
She was really here. In the same city. Minutes away.
And she hadn’t told him.
He thumbed over the comment section again, hovering over the reply box. Maybe something light. Easy. Something like:
"Pls tell your cousin to quit trying to lie to me."
Or maybe just an emoji. The eyes 👀 maybe. Keep it vague. Keep it safe.
He typed. Erased. Typed again.
Paused.
His finger hovered over the send button.
He didn’t know why he was hesitating so hard. It was just a comment. Just her. Right?

He just stared at it.
Heart rattling in his chest like it was trying to tell him something.

So instead, he leaned his head back, let the quiet wrap around him again, and smiled like an idiot.

I made this while watching Monaco qualifying and during the race and guess who won? That's right people, Lando— fucking —Norris 🧡 Not only that, he set a monaco lap record 👏👏 Splendid race. I was wishing for Charles to somehow take pole but at least they got P2, which is not too bad considering I was slowly losing hope for Ferrari 😭
