Afterglow by tswift for a fic idea for Audrey Rose and Thomas pretty please!!!
here you go, love!! hope you enjoy!! shout out to @highqueenofelfhame for being the light of my life and giving me the inspo for cressworthâs argument xx
Hot tempers were something inherited by all blood-born Wadsworthâs, and Audrey Rose was no exception. Though she was a Cresswell now, and had been for eight whole years, that didnât mean the feisty sparks that lay beneath her skin had simmered down. Usually her temper was saved for uptight, horrible old men who thought they knew more about forensics and science simply by having an extra body part between their legs than her, the woman whoâd studied it since the age of 16. However, the case the Cresswells were working on was an awful one, and tied with the fact theyâd just recently discovered Audrey Rose was pregnant⊠things had escalated quickly.Â
It was Audrey Roseâs first pregnancy, and neither of them knew truly how to handle it, but they were trying.Â
This particular killer was a truly sadistic, despicable shape of man. His victims showed an alarming pattern - all four women had been in varying stages of pregnancy.Â
Audrey Rose knew Thomas fussed - he tried to keep it at a minimum, as too much coddling crossed the line between affectionate and stifling - but while she was pregnant, Thomas was insufferable, despite his best intentions. He always wanted to make sure she was alright, that she was comfortable, that her morning sickness wasnât too bad, that the smells of the autopsy werenât too much - all things that were perfectly normal to worry over, but combined pushed the stressed forensic scientist over the edge.Â
âWill you just stop fussing for once Cresswell, and focus on the bloody case?â Her voice pierced through the room, silencing her husband. Instantly, shame rushed through her at the sight of the emotional walls springing back up on Thomasâ face.Â
The sight brought back memories of their fight in Romania all those years ago, when sheâd screamed at him that she would rather die an old maid than ever marry him. Just like then, she didnât truly mean what she said, but the damage was done.Â
âI see.â Her loveâs voice was prim, though she could still hear the hurt shining through. âIf thatâs so, then Iâll go search for any possible information, and leave you alone.âÂ
âThomas, I-â But heâd stalked from the room before she could say another word.
Hours had passed, with the two Cresswellâs too stubborn to seek each other out and apologise. This happened every time they fought, which wasnât often, but they would always retreat to their separate corners of the estate to cool off, before apologising hours later, the silly arguments forgotten in the midst of healing cuddles and soft kisses.Â
Audrey Rose knew where Thomas would be - the blue and gold chaise in the library, next to the fire place.Â
She walked in, noting her husband was curled up on his favourite chaise, the one they had spent hours in just cuddling and enjoying each otherâs company. His body was turned from hers, hunched over a science journal, no doubt to distract his busy mind from their argument.Â
âCresswell?â She broached gently, sinking into the plush fabric of the chair next to him, close enough to touch. She knew sheâd hurt his feelings - which killed her, truly - but he was so infuriating when he crossed the line between kindness and coddling.Â
She rested her cheek against his back, feeling him relax against her touch. They stayed like that for a few minutes, while they both collated their thoughts, breathing in time with each other and relishing in the soft contact.Â
Audrey Rose wrapped an arm around his waist, resting it on his inner thigh. Slowly he lifted her hand to his lips, and kissed her palm, the touch containing all the love in the world, so much that she knew they would be alright.Â
âIâm sorry for yelling at you, Thomas, I just- you know how I loathe it when I believe you think me inferior.â Her voice reverberated through the quiet room.Â
âI know, my love.â Thomas murmured, turning around finally. The noting of his red rimmed eyes twisted at her heart, knowing that sheâd hurt him and that theyâd both cried over each other.
He held her hand to his chest, and she could feel the thumping of his heart through his chest.Â
âI must apologise too, Wadsworth. I never wish you to think I believe you lesser, or less capable, especially considering youâre carrying a child - a feat half the population of the world would shudder at the mere thought of doing. You are my equal, my best friend. Beyond life, beyond death.â He whispered, kissing her palm oh-so-gently.Â
âMy love for thee is eternal,â She repeated back their phrase, nuzzling her face into his chest, finally allowing herself to relax in his arms. The stress of the case still stayed with her, but now she had her best friend, her lover, her husband back within reach, they would tackle the world together, and their case no longer seemed so overwhelming.Â
âI love you, Thomas.â
âI love you too, Audrey Rose.âÂ
