I feel like Treasure Planet had a really important and relatable story to tell and it makes me sad that it got looked over.  Cuz I really love where Disney was coming from with that one.  Hes just such a conflicted character with really interesting and realistic internal conflict and real flaws.  Hes troubled, hes sad, but he can have fun.  Hes smart, but he doesn’t apply it at first. Hes been hurt.  He doesn’t know why, he’s been abandoned.  One could argue he has self hate issues.  Even if he makes his mother mad he loves her and will protect her.  He doesnt WANT to make her mad.  Theres a childish side to him that still wants to believe in fairy tales.  There are things very adult about him and the pain he has is real, but hes still a kid, who observes the fantastic with starry eyes.

He thinks everyone thinks hes a screw up.  He probably thinks hes a screw up.  Part of him probably says “I’m worthless” and part of him probably says “No you arent!”

You can tell the way tears well in his eyes when Silver tells him hes going to be great, hed never heard that before.  Someone CARES about him.  Someone is telling him he MATTERS.  The dialog in this scene kills me.  The things Jim says kill me every time.  “For two seconds, I thought maybe I could do something right!” These are little words that people let out when there is a storm inside their head.  Jim has done AMAZING things, but he only sees his own mistakes.  Jim is so defeated.  So tired.  And this is a place a lot of us have been. 

I just find Jim’s internal conflict to be so real an tangible and relatable, and the older I get the more surprised I am by how raw and emotional these scenes are.
