What are noemata, and how do I begin to catalogue mine?
Look at my beautiful zine that is only slightly propaganda to convince you to consider speculative biology and conlanging as an alterhuman, nonhuman, system, etc.
I want to preface this by saying that I understand why many alter/nonhumans want to be referred to and thought of as Completely Not Human At All and I support them fully. This is not at all a criticism of them.
I do not think that this should be called dehumanization, though, because that is not what it is. They want to be seen and referred to as fully nonhuman because it would be respectful of us to honor their identity and self. However dehumanization is, by definition, not respectful. To dehumanize someone is to deny them agency and dignity and individuality, to subject them to degradation and abuse, and to treat them however is convenient to you, regardless of their wishes. Paradoxically, it would be dehumanizing to refer to total nonhumans as humans, because the point of dehumanization is that the subject doesn't have agency or respect or control, and allowing them to self-define would be allowing them that dignity. Dehumanization at its core isn't at all about treating someone like a human or not. That's just the existing comparison because typical English-speaking culture revolves around a human=good, object/animal=bad binary, so the vocab reflects this assumption.
I think we need a major terminology shift around this word, because it's just not correct, and we need a word that actually expresses what's being requested. I'm not proposing a wildly new term, because I'm not a huge fan of them due to accessibility reasons, but I've got a suggestion to replace 'dehumanize.'
Dehominize — Based on the existing word 'hominization,' meaning 'the evolution of the human traits that set the genus Homo apart from its primate ancestors.' You can infer from the noun form that the verb 'hominize' could exist, and from there, adding the suffix de- makes sense as well. This would mean, therefore, 'to remove the human traits common to the genus Homo,' and it (hopefully) maintains the neutral, science-textbook tone of the original word, without having any current racialized baggage. Anybody who is fully not human and wants to be recognized as such could say that they wish to be dehominized without any question as to their meaning.
Open to ideas and suggestions, so if you have any, let me know. I'm just tired of seeing posts going 'but I want to be dehumanized because I'm not human!' and others (especially alter/nonhumans of color, who sadly know very well what dehumanization is) going 'that isn't what that means, though, you're asking for something negative' and it devolving into an argument. Words do have meaning, so hopefully this one having a distinct new meaning with no prior baggage will help on that front.

Oh sweet! Boosting the Tumblr community and also yea, Im thinking of organizing a Discord space. I wanna do some research into some less hierarchical ways of moderating a server first because I want to avoid being in a seat of unique power as much as possible, but im glad to know there's interest and ill try to get on that.
Ive been in and out of the ER lately and struggling severely with my health, but I really wanna manifest a culture of decolonizing in a community made with racially and ethnically marginalized people at the center. I wanna see what we can imagine together. And I mean that as more than a bunch of buzzwords or a virtue signal.
Im also super open to collaboration and help in imaginging and bringing to life a new space. However many folks wanna get on board!

when it comes to discord servers in particular some degree of “someone has to own the server” and “some people are more equipped to handle janitorial positions than others” is inevitable. imo the devil is mostly in how moderator positions are framed, as “authoritative” rather than as voluntarily doing extra work for the sake of the larger group (my partner @halflightprince is an anarchist and we’ve had these sort of conversations before)

Being fictionfolk is so ridiculous sometimes like. Yeah I can think about this series of horrific events in detail so long as I approach it "intellectually" as nothing but a story to engage with. But the second I think about my own identity and how I went through that shit my brain starts screaming Do Not Touch The Hot Stove at me, and so it becomes very hard to think about any of it. But if I wanna write fanfics about my fictotype that's totally fine so long as I don't think too hard about how that's me on the page. What the fuck.

Been meaning to say this for a while, but here's a not so gentle reminder that you don't have to be skinny, white and able bodied to be part of the nonhuman community.
Racism and ableism is sadly rampant in this community and I want this blog to be safe for the beings that feel excluded! Theriform [Official Coining Post]
Theriform Adjective (can applied as a noun in certain phrasing, see examples)
From θηρίον (thēríon) [diminutive of θήρ thḗr, “wild beast”] and μορφή (morphe) ["shape"/"figure"/"look"].
Definition:
A theriform animal is one which was born into a body that is typical/expected of it's species and observable as such by everyone, with species-typical levels of sapience/intelligence and whose behaviour is unaltered by being born into a human body/raised in a form perceived as human.
It is not the 'opposite' of therian despite similar etymology but is instead to be viewed as a complimentary term to therian, nonhuman, alterhuman, otherkin etc as it exists to specify certain details of a species whilst not invalidating the identities of those who are not theriform. It is made to replace potentially invalidating phrases like 'bio(logical) animal' or 'real animal'.
It is not an identity label and therefore has no flag or symbol and does not need one. Do not create these things please, or use the term to describe yourself on a personal level.
Alternative versions for non-animals could include: floraform, nat(ur)form, techform, fictoform, feyform, voidform, starform, divineform etc
Examples:
"Lol it's so funny being a cat and having a theriform cat as a pet we're both just kitties vibing but with different body shapes."
"Just because they're the same species are you does not mean you are able to take care of wild theriforms."
"The fact that there aren't that many theriforms of my species is so saddening."
"I wanna do quads alongside a pack of theriform wolves so bad!"
"I am transspecies, here is what I do/what I want to do to look more theriform."
"I wonder if theriforms get species dysphoria?"
the beauty of online anonymity in the alterhuman community is that i don't know what any of you look like irl, so when i read your posts and picture you speaking them aloud, i imagine that a wolf, or a crow, or a dragon, or whatever creature you may be, is the one speaking
anyone have any suggestions for subtle fictionkin/alterhuman signaling?? I desperately want to make it known to other alterhumans in my area that I’M ONE OF Y’ALL without making it obvious to non-alterhumans.
I’ve always found it hard to give off the vibe of fictionkin rather than just fan of media, but I find the best way to do it would be to incorporate other symbols like the fictionkin symbol, elven star etc. alongside imagery of your kintype? Like in your case, maybe you diy a necklace with a train charm and a septagram on it, or maybe you add a badge with an alt key on it to a StEx tote bag. Something that communicates character + being kin.
We all know that the “kin for fun” trend is bad.
Recently, however, the question of “why is it bad?” has risen in prominence, and thus I’d like to give my two cents on the matter. I initially wanted to give a rehash of the whole “this is a community which has been around for decades, please don’t appropriate its terms because you don’t know what you’re talking about” spiel.. though I know that’s been repeated endlessly to no avail.
Dozens of times I’ve tried to explain that, though I’ve often been faced with the “words change” or “it’s just a game, it harms no one” argument.
So I’m taking a more personal approach.
I don’t know if my anecdotes will change anyone’s mind, but if anyone in the “kin for fun” community sees this and actually reads through it, I implore you to try to listen to genuine otherkin, do some research, and find other terms that better suit you.
