Stay

Lockers lined the hallway, glinting in the sunlight. A new kid closes his locker; his hair captures the light. Classmates pass by, and two students kiss. Soccer jersey, a smile, serene face. Eyes lock, and the new kid cannot breathe.

Green and blue, moon reflected on the water. Tangled limbs and sheets, a head rests on the new kid's chest. Bus tires screech and a warm moment, dancing and chorus of voices. Yearbook snaps and the new kid smiles with red cheeks. Nighttime confession and a startled laugh.

Boxes taken home, clothes returned to dressers and closets. A vow unbroken, foreheads touch, a sleepover. A swingset, a painful surprise near an anthill. Boys laugh, arms around the shoulders. A brief stolen kiss, cheeks erupt in color.
