heated rivalry may technically be canadian television but it is not actually canadian television

#this is my hot take and yes everyone thinks i'm insane when i say that it does not feel like canadian television #anyway i've posted too much about this for a show i only medium enjoyed

i've become immune to outrage culture at this point, i don't even care what it is, the second i feel like someone's only goal is to make me mad at xyz thing i instinctively react in opposition to it

#honestly i recommend this if you want to you know. not be angry 24/7 #also it's very helpful for giving you time to think

this sounds silly but i've been grieving a little bit because i'm starting to feel like i'm outgrowing tumblr, or something. but i'm tired, i'm tired of the snarky, mean rehashing of the exact same take for the 8500th time, i'm tired of a more and more non-social "social media" using a format that is not conducive to honest back-and-forth discussions

#anyway tumblr used to not be full of the tiktok/twitter vibes but they're increasingly everywhere #is it tumblr or is it the 911 fandom? maybe i just need to block literally everyone

i actually think i would have enjoyed heated rivalry more if it wasn't so hyped. or if it wasn't trying to be an hbo max show.

#here's the thing #i love bad canadian tv #i love good canadian tv operating on shoestring budgets and leaning into their limitations #heated rivalry was none of these things #i love tv shows that know what they are #and aren't trying to be something they are not #i mean it was okay canadian tv trying to act like it was prestige which is unfortunately not what i like out of my canadian tv #even schitts creek had a canadian charm to it that heated rivalry just does not have

here's the thing, i think if heated rivalry hadn't won every single other category they were in, i would feel like maybe they had actually evaluated north of north's costuming against it and decided it should have won based on merit (though i disagree with the reasons i see arguing for HR's win. i would not have picked up on the intent behind their costuming choices if hadn't been told about them, and in my opinion they did not do a good job of quietly telling a story because i was not engaged with the storytelling at all in episodes 1,2 and 4 whereas north of north does a visually stunning job of melding culture, modernity, warmth! in together in a way that works).

but that said, given as my assessment of heated rivalry is "it was fun and it was fine, but it wasn't prestige television" disagrees with how the awards were evaluated, i get the feeling that if comedy and drama HAD been up against each other, north of north wouldn't have won a single award, even though I think in many many respects it was better in the canadian screen awards categories. all of this makes heated rivalry winning in the few categories they were up against each other seem like it was a case of choosing the hyped option.

#or maybe the costumes did do a good job of telling the story at which point the editing and directing negated it but ???#i didn't notice a single costume throughout the entire show #north of north winning hair really felt like it was only the case BECAUSE heated rivalry wasn't nominated #north of north #anyway that's my two cents and i'm going to stop talking about this now #and the reason i'm okay with most of their wins is that i'll believe in anything was miles better than all the other eps #and tbh nothing else nominated stood out to me
