"What do you think, boy? Is this place home?"
*bark bark*
Sami laughs, rounding the table, "Shh, you'll wake up Tisha."
"Look who remembered to bring your brush with!" Sami whispers excitedly, waving it in the air after pulling it from the box on the counter. Max pants, wagging his tail.
"Now.. No running off until Tisha and I can have a look around and see what kind of situation we're going to be dealing with. Hopefully we can stay here for longer than the last place." She sighs, hanging her head.
Max presses his nose into her face before licking Sami's cheek.
"Thanks Maxipoo, I love you, too." Sami stood, stretching her legs. "That couch looks awfully inviting... let's see how comfortable it is, huh?"
The sound of the door creaking has Sami jumping up from where she was squatting and Max immediately gets in a defensive position, growling. Tisha pokes her head in, her eyes growing wide as she takes in her new friends.
"It's just me," she whispers. "Is it ok if I come in?"
"Of course, Tisha. This is home.. at last for now. I checked the fence and it's secure. There is are some plants on the side of the building kind of.. I want to check them out when there is more light, but I am 97.. mmm, ok 95% sure it's a garden." Sami sits in the chair by the table.
Tisha looks around and spots a make-shift bookshelf and walks over to it, looking at some of the titles. "Hey, my Mom had this book." She pulls it gingerly from the shelf, wiping the dust and cobwebs from the exposed spine and pages before turning and pressing her hand on the seat of a chair to check if it was stable enough for her to sit on.
Sami clears her throat, "I think I'll take a nap and later we can go over to one of the buildings I saw from the side of the house. I think it's a factory or some sort of building, might have some supplies there we can get."
"Uh.. yea, sure." Tisha replied, already engrossed in whatever it was she was reading.
Tisha looks up from Sami, her finger where she left off on the page she was reading. She studied Sami's face before she gave her a crooked smile, "I'm ok."
Sami nods, walking to the couch, she sits down carefully before bouncing on it a couple times to check for any loose springs. Satisfied she wasn't going to wake up with something stabbing her, she laid her head down and closed her eyes.
She couldn't help be worried about Tisha, she was only 15 years old and she didn't just lose her Dad that night.. she lost her Mother and her twin brother. Tisha definitely wasn't "ok," but she was able to get her to eat some food and she was talking now, Sami would take that as a plus in her book. She heard Max approach the couch and lay down between both her and Tisha, huffing as he settled down. Sami reached her hand down to scratch his ear before she turned on her side letting sleep take her.
Afterall, who knows what tomorrow will bring. For now, Tisha was talking and eating, Max is alive and she's going to take a nap. She'll take that as a win.
