Apropos of nothing
I went to one of those drink-and-paint-along parties that were so popular several years ago. They set up each little station with individual supplies - brushes, pencil/eraser, paper plates for palettes, and canvas, of course. I knew what the final product should look like, so I set to my canvas with the pencil provided, just to block some basic shapes/areas. When she saw my work, our 'instructor' scolded me. She said "Real artists don't sketch". I almost left on the spot but my wife was so jazzed about doing the thing that I stayed and tried to have a good time anyway. My question is this: When painting (say acrylic for the sake of argument), do you sketch with pencil first? Or something else? Or not at all?
