The second, and final, studio album by Joy Division was released on 18 July 1980, exactly 2 months after lead singer Ian Curtis’s suicide on 18 May.
The album jacket was designed by Martyn Atkins and Peter Saville, using a photograph by Bernard Pierre Wolff of a family tomb in an Italian cemetery. The design was completed before the death of Ian Curtis, and while Saville expressed concern (”we’ve got a tomb on the cover of the album!“) it was decided to keep the image.
The album peaked at #6 in the UK, but failed to find an audience in the US on its initial release.
