the hierophant ( ao3 )
Walk through this gate, feel this hush, let my falling petals meet your outstretched hands. Let the cool, petal-scented water purify your skin.
This is my favorite time, the springâŚyours as well, incidentally. We share a fondness for the sweet east wind.
Leave your offering. Say your prayer. But first, talk with me.
: : :
Great and terrible he was, and not in the way things today are âgreatâ or âterrible.â It was easier to become a god back then, and easier to strike at them from this shore. He benefited from that. He can admit that now. He was not one prone to admitting much. He still isnât.
: : :
See how he presides? See how peaceful and untroubled his brow? His worshipers cannot say the same; their worries leave cheeks thin and eyes hollow.
His most frequent request is one of immediate practicality. Before the schools hold their exams, the shrine floods with pale, nervous students, eager to offer up this lastâto most of them futileâbit of hope.
: : :
He was a man of letters, a high person in politics, a scholar in days when scholars could be as savage as warlords. He was subtle, quick, and ruthless. He read a great deal of literature that improved his mind, and some that did not. He had enemies, because men of letters, high people in politics, and true scholar-lords always do.
He advised, he schemed, he bribed, and, yes, he wrote poetry. Many great men did. Hitherto, his magnificence had been measured only by human metrics, and praised by human mouths.
Gods care nothing for fame.
Fear, however. They care a great deal about fear.
: : :
He waits for you to approach. Your hesitation is natural, even wise, but you must cast it off. You have been honored with his attention and time, and to waste a second of it would be a blasphemy.
âWhat is your request, child?â
The calm of his voice settles over you like a silk scarf. You look at his face, into an expression of such sanctified silence that for a moment, all words are lost.
: : :
The stories are, I must admit to you, conflicted. But trust me, gentle supplicant, when I say that the gods care less for cause than for effect. The cause of a scholar-lordâs death is much less interesting to them than the effects of that death, which were cataclysmic.
Storms. Not spring storms that bring rain and sweetness, but merciless, dry, rolling tempests, full of blue lightning and the wardrum of thunder. It was, they believed, the vengeance of Sugawara no Michizane, who had died in exile and had put down his poems forever to chase the men who caused his end.
Impressive, donât you think? The gods thought so, too.
: : :
You hear yourself address him, your request murmured in a voice that doesnât shake or stumble. The anxiety you felt at the entrance to the shrine has melted off you like early spring snow.
âYour prayer has been heard,â he tells you, which is more than you expected to hear.
There is an utter calm in his voice that makes you think of deep, silent water. His expression is so intenseâan intense quietude, but in its savage focus revealing his other extremes.
You see the heavens scarred with blue lightning. You hear the echo of the wardrum.
What you feel in response is not quite fearâfor a moment you are the sole passenger in a small boat, on the surface of that depth of water. No imminent sign of danger, but something could still emerge.
âThank you, revered teacher,â you say in a panic, blurting it out as you take one step back, and then another. At a respectful distance you bow once more, unable to meet his ancient gray gaze, and turn your back on the peaceful grounds of the shrine.
As you hurry away, you may have resolved not to return. Many who meet the master of this shrine do. But they do returnâeach of them returns, whether it be in weeks, months, or years.
the graphicless cover I did for Night Divining, @noragamitarotzine! This project has been a true work of love, and I was happy to supplement additional visuals aside from tarot cards, including fanfic illustrations and card-and-box design. Only 2 days left to grab leftovers before they're gone forever, so check out the shop now!

Artwork I did for Night Divining: Noragami Tarot Zine @noragamitarotzine - I was tasked with designing a card for Justice, portraying Heaven. An entity objectively overlooking humans from above. The rice fields mirror sky only partially - when turning the card upside down, there is a storm coming... Thank you for having me on board! â¤ď¸
We are having leftovers sale! Please check it out here: https://noragamizine.bigcartel.com/
Time to share my full piece for the Noragami Tarot Zine - Night Divining! I got the chance to write about Hagusa and his "torn" thoughts during the last arc of the manga as the Judgement card. You can read the full poem on my Ao3 here.
Make sure to check out the rest of the outstanding work done by all the artists and writers on this project as well! We had an amazing group of people and I'm so happy and proud to be apart of this project! @noragamitarotzine
Don't forget there are still leftovers of the physical zines and merch for sale on our store front here.
What a wonderful experience writing for the @noragamitarotzine! Check out everyone's work there, and my piece below the cut!
It could have gone like this:
Cicadas hum in sunset-soaked trees, the smell of asphalt at odds with the fresh-cut grass. You sit next to a girl on the swingset, puffs of dust erupting each time you skid to a stop. Youâre eating a snack that you probably swindled from some poor human, smears of food around the corner of your mouth until you look at your reflection and gasp at the audacity of no one telling you that you had something on your face.
(Once broken, can anything truly be put back together?)
The signal is always three flicks of her light. You knock on the window late at night, your grin wide and full of more stories to tell while you float around a room that must look so mundane compared to Heaven. But no, in this world, it would be interestingâyour eye would catch on an award hung on the walls, or on a family photo on the desk, and you would get that hungry little look in your eyes, the one that says you must know in great detail everything there is to know about whatever prompted it. And in this world, youâd get more than an exasperated answer.
(What jokes would you have shared today?)
Or perhaps it went like this:
You pester Yukine on the way to school, buying a plushie and stickers because you know he gets so excited to get a âgood job!â when thereâs a sticker. You say annoying things and are so pleased when no one leaves, proud that you have friends despite what Father told you.Â
Maybe youâd get bored and visit the hospital, leaving advertisements all over the bulletin board. Youâd grin at all the work youâll be able to do with your hafuri and all the time youâll be able to spend outside of bedrooms, looking in.
(Would things be different now, if you never felt the blight-sting from these claws?)
The floors are quiet. Monitors beep and the hum of fluorescent lighting is loud in the one unoccupied room you find. You think about all the trouble youâll cause later and how youâll pass it off on Daikoku or Kofuku, and wonder if you can hide a beer long enough to finish it before Yukine notices.Â
(Do you know how ichor tastes?)
You linger by the window, hips and shoulders that glorious degree of perpendicular, lips in line with the sun. You smileâwhy? Do you still have faith in tomorrow? Is loss so far away?
Gone is the high school graduation party in Kofukuâs home, flushed from too much to drink and wondering about the heat where our shoulders touch; gone are the mornings you drag us to your favorite restaurant just to have us try everything on the menu and pretend like you donât care about our opinions; gone are the nights you hover in the tree, both of us pretending youâre not there as you watch another human night hit the bottom of the hourglass.
(Was there ever a world in which your blood didnât dry, blasphemous, beneath my nails?)
Instead of sunbeams, we get sirens. And thatâs the worst of it; weâre trapped in every shard of glass and frantic phone call from loved ones who just want to know their person is safe, and we will never get back to those lazy afternoons or bandaged hands or shining, precious almosts. The ground hasnât fallen away; it sits heavy and aching with no way out.Â
I hold the could-have-beens tight to my chest while I leap for your throat. I tuck each and every plan for our future into bed and watch them burn away as my blight eats your flesh. Maybe if you grant this wish, this final, desperate wish, something can be saved. I sink my teeth into your shoulder and ignore the screams and moans from the hospital Iâll no longer grow up to work at.
Your blood coats my tongue and you look at me like it doesnât matter, like nothing matters except us going home together, so I hand you the weight of tomorrow and wait for Sekki to join me to you forever.
Do you think weâll be happy, in this unimagined world?
