Chibi kny style Higanbana and some thoughts
The idea of how I came up with Higanbana is a bit funny, and she is an interesting case among my many ocs that I have for many fandoms because she is actually my first oc created to be shipped with a character I have a crush for. You see, when I was developing my fic, Pitiful Beings, I decided to have a character that would be the last seer before Reika, and that said character would have a important presence in the story, despite not being physically present, through their influence on Reika as a role model to look up to, due to the inherited memories she awakens during the story. That was how Chiyume was created, and in developing her personality and background, I intentionally made so that she, in some ways, was a parallel to Douma because I thought it would be interesting for Reika to have these two major influences in her life that were opposites but also similar !
Namely, I made Chiyume and Douma parallel through the idea that both of them were once children denominated as “divine” who were put in a position that made them have to help and be burdened with the problems of the adults around them, and due to all that developed savior complexes and a mindset that tells them that they are always right and that their roles are absolute. The big difference between them in such parallel is that Chiyume was actually someone with powers and even though her family certainly incentivized her to use her powers in order to save others and profit from that, it all began and was always, for Chiyume herself, a matter she approached with enthusiasm because she liked the attention and the feeling of being a heroine, but later in life she began feeling tired and consumed, even disillusioned with her lifestyle ( I like to think of her like a child star that eventually burned their energies when young and weren’t able to have a normal life ). While Douma was just born looking different but otherwise was just a kid who got so terribly groomed since he was born into being a cult leader by his awful parents that he lost his ability to feel emotions. Shortly after creating Chiyume and her implementing her in Pitiful Beings, I just began in my free time to think about how interactions between her and Douma would go, and how funny their dynamic would be, and began kinda shipping them. Before that all my other ocs I really implemented time and effort into were never ocs I shipped with canon characters, much less canon characters I personally like, so it was a first for me, and I ended up finding a lot of enjoyment out of shipping them, even though I am not someone that is into romance or shipping. But the thing is … in the timeline of my fic Chiyume is long dead before Douma is even born, they’ve never met and never will meet, so how can I ship them ? And also, just as importantly, I can see Douma falling for Chiyume, but I couldn’t see Chiyume falling for Douma because he is a demon and she has a terriblehistory with demons, so it would be one sided and I didn’t want that !
But then I had the genius idea : just make an Au in which Chiyume is turned into a demon and lives for hundreds of years until the events of what would this Au’s version of Pitiful Beings be ! That way her and Douma get the chance to know each other, there is no problem morality wise because both of them are demons and both are adults when they meet and on top of that I can explore with would be the dynamic of this demon version of Chiyume with Reika ! So that is how Higanbana was born, basically ! I developed her lore and powers and dynamics and ever since then I’ve been obsessed with her, almost all love songs I hear make me think of her and Douma. Also I just want to clarify the fact that me shipping her with a character I like does not, by any means, signify that she represents me, she is her own character with her own personality. Self inserts are awesome, no matter how many people say they are cringe or anything like that, I just am not very interested in making one for myself.
I made a kny style chibi of Chiyume too

the best fanfiction you've ever read was written by a woman in her 40s before she made dinner for her kids. it was written by a teenager after school when they should've been studying for a history test. and a barista came up with the idea while they cleaned the espresso machine and busser fact-checked it on their break and the post-doc edited between writing grant proposals and the nurse apologized for typos in the notes after a long shift and behind every drabble and one-shot and multi-chapter fic there is a person with a wonderful and interesting and chaotic life and it is such a privilege that we get to be a part of it because they decided to do this thing we all share, for fun.
what’s the bet that percabeth shippers are going to hate Rachel so much that the actor gets death threats. She was such an interesting and important character and I will be quite mad if she gets reduced to only a competing love interest.
my fav pokemon fact is that 25% of marill are canonically trans masc
the gender ratio for azurill is 75% female whilst for marill it’s only 50%.
also look how much happier he is post transition! go on king <3
happy pride month to transgender marill pokemon <3
Apollo telling Annabeth about how he wants his palace to be rebuilt: "...and a big statue of me holding a big red ball!"
Annabeth: "Not a typical depiction of the sun, but okay, we can-"
Apollo: "No, not the sun. A rubber ball, a dodgeball, I think you mortals call it."
Annabeth: "I thought Hermes was the god of sports?"
Apollo: "He is, but I'm the god of prophecy, and trust me, this is gonna be really funny in five to ten years."
this. this post. im going more in depth.
show percy is almost completely incapable of looking at the bigger picture and the only time he does is when the plot calls for it; him leaving sally in the underworld.
if i were in percys position in sea of monsters when annabeth got hurt and luke was asking for the fleece, i dont know if id make a different decision than he did. however he did make a different decision. in the books. because that entire scene didnt happen and it worked better
honestly i dont like how much they changed of season 2, they literally lost the plot.
every single thing in percys life, in the show, revolves around annabeth which is my main point of evidence for this whole thing. im also thinking of the 'id burn it all down' scene, which book!percy wouldnt even say after tartarus. theres not a single time he says anything similar, the only thing close to that scene is the 'i dont care if the world ended right here' which, i could be wrong bc its been a bit since ive read the books, but is in moa when percabeth reunited after months apart? thats an entirely different context and also, not an active statement! percy in that scene (i think its in his pov?) is saying he wouldnt stop the end of the world, percy in the 'burn it all down' is saying he would go out of his way.
and him saying that hed burn down olympus just. ignores so much about percys character. this can be brought back to this post, misunderstanding the why, with people just. not understanding where percy stands in the war and why. they think its because he had a somewhat better upbringing than luke and thats why he didnt join kronos, when honestly id say percy had a worse childhood considering the physical, emotional and financial abuse from gabe, along with the bullying from classmates and the discrimination from teachers, which is never stated to have happened to luke and honestly. he looks like show!percy while book!percy has a medetterainian skin tone and darker hair, which people see and immeditley assume hes a troublemaker and yeah that seems like a pretty big part of their characters that was completely erased in the show, but thats not what this is about. but its not (entirely) because of how percy was raised nor how he was treated at camp or by the gods (which is waayy worse than luke ever was), its because percy actually cares about people. as a whole. i went into more detail in the previously linked post,
but the misunderstanding of the why and where he stands in the war is spreading to the show too and we see that clearly with the 'id burn it all down' line, its saying that percys only on the side of the war hes on because the people he cares about are on that side, and while thats not entirely wrong, its not the full truth either also, i dont think percys loyalty was ever shown in the 'youd sacrifice the world to save a friend' no. he left his mother to save the world. he took the prophecy to save nico. he has never outright done anything in the books (intentionally) that would put the world nor the gods in danger. it showed- well first of all i dont think it was shown that well in the books to begin with, i still have a hard time believing thats his fatal flaw- it showed more in the people around him, if he has an emotional connection to someone (sally, annabeth, grover, nico specifically) then hes going to try and prioritize their saftey above all, but as we see in the lightning thief, he cant always do that without damage being caused thats only going to end with a worse outcome
people also seem to forget very often that you cant really protect the people you care about if theyre not a world to live in. i feel like thats a somewhat obvious thing but i also feel like people dont really process that?? kronos' world is going to be almost entirely inhabitable to people and humans and so much of the current world, and if that happens then the chances of the demigods surviving are fucking slim to none. WE ARE OUTRIGHT TOLD THIS. percy himself is aware of this, very aware, as he tells luke this directly. not just luke, but other demigods in the titan war that he comes across. he knows how bad kronos will be, and he knows destroying the gods/olympus, no matter how it happens, will only help him percy would not burn down olympus. because then the world will fall, and then look at that. everyone he cares about is dead because everything in the new world is outright hostile to them and theres no safe space.
luke poisoned thalias tree to destroy the borders of camp half blood. there will be no safe spaces. percy knows this.
Some facts about my kny oc Reika
Differently from my post of facts about Higanbana, this post here is more about little details and extra thoughts about Reika and her development, since her story can be accompanied by my fic Pitiful Beings !
Reika’s birthday is in the 28 of July.
I had to age up Kotoha in order to make it make sense for her to have a 6 year old and a baby, but she did, unfortunately, get pregnant and give birth to Reika while she was underage
Reika has had many different names since I first had the idea of her. Her first name was Keiko (blessed child) , but I felt it was too plain, though I liked the irony behind it. The second name I had for her was Chieko ( child blessed with wisdom) but when I thought about it try pronunciation was too close to Chekhov and I found it funny. Then it was Chiemi ( beautiful blessing of wisdom) but I didn’t like that the end of the name was so much like the end of Sanemi’s name and I shipped them so it was weird a couple having similar names. I settled for Reika (singing performer) and am very happy with it and what it symbolizes for her future developments ! In universe Reika’s wasn’t named by Kotoha, but instead by her paternal grandmother, but she doesn’t know that, if she did she would dislike her name.
Reika’s favorite foods are Castella cake and strawberries, she naturally loves sweet foods and craves sweetness.
I know that in the Kimetsu Academy universe the drum demon is the music teacher … but I don’t care about him so in my version Reika would be the music teacher and her and Sanemi are dating. Douma is still her adoptive parent but at least he didn’t kidnap her, he just ended up taking her in after her mother, whom he was trying to scam into a fake marriage, died tragically on a car accident and her little brother disappeared. She is often embarrassed by his antics and tries making him stop being a con artist but it’s no use, he’s too stubborn about it, but despite that in such Au they actually have a very good relationship overall and she visits his place often to see him. When Reika ended up meeting Inosuke as her student in the school she recognized him immediately and began crying like crazy, and hugged him really tight while he didn’t know what was going on. After the situation was cleared out Reika asked Inosuke to come live with her but he had grown attached to his elderly foster mom so they basically settled for a shared custody agreement where he stays some days of the week with Reika. Reika’s favorite students are the Shabana siblings, she thinks they are fun and also they are technically her siblings since Douma is fostering them.
At first when I created Reika I didn’t intend to ship her with anyone, I only had in mind that she was bi. But one day I questioned that if I had to ship her with any viable kny character then her and Sanemi would be fun, though I didn’t even like his character as much as I do now back then. I shipped them for a while until I thought that maybe their personalities didn’t match well, so I shipped her with Giyuu for some time but I thought them together was really boring. Eventually I got a better understanding of Sanemi’s character and saw that him and Reika match a lot ! That’s why I ship ReiNemi so much now.
If Reika existed in present time her job would either be as a music teacher and singing coach or as a forensic medical examiner, with a keen eye to finding out how people died.
The flower that represents Reika in the story is the blue-spider-lily, obviously, but if any other flower had to represent her it would be either an orchid or a forget-me-not. Her favorite flowers are plum blossoms though.
Reika’s favorite animals are cats, but she really likes foxes for some reason. Animals kind of naturally love her and she has interests in biology and botany since she was small. She hates bugs, they creep her out !
Reika’s favorite color is green, like her mother’s eyes, like her own eyes.
I always had in my head the idea of Reika as an adult being very tall, so let’s consider that she inherited everything from her mother and only got her biological father’s tall genes.
Reika is as flexible as Inosuke actually, she just doesn’t know that because she never really tapped into that.
Sometimes, Reika does things or feels or thinks or says things that she doesn’t fully understand and that she doesn’t know from where they come from. Sometimes things she has never seen before feel familiar to her. Sometimes seeing death doesn’t scare her as much as it should. There are many mysteries behind her and her visions, behind the blue-spider-lily and those who came before her.
remember when Percy's show actor was announced and we all excitedly looked at Walker Scobell's previous roles which were full of sassines and humor only for none of that to translate to pjo show?
just like kokushibo being the one who turns kaigaku into a demon is a choice that is relevant to both of their characters, douma turning gyutaro and daki into demons is also a significant and specific writing choice. it's not a coincidence that he is the one to turn them; it's about children who were failed by adults around them.
I always try to extend the characters the same sympathy gotoge gives them. maybe douma's parents didn't start the cult with bad intentions; they probably believed in the uniqueness of their son, and thought there is a reason behind it—to help others. still, they hurt him. there is no conclusive explanation to douma's 'condition' within the story. it could be the result of his childhood being taken away from him and him being forced to provide emotional and mental support to the adults in his life, or perhaps it was a condition he was born with that made it hard for him to connect with others and his own emotions. but becoming a religious symbol definitely didn't help with his situation. his parents showed more interest in him being a spiritual leader than being a well loved child and that is just in the beginning, with time their good intention was poisoned by greed and power. his dad spent his days using the girls within the cult abusing his position and his mother was too consumed with her anger and the humiliation she endured that she lost sight of everything else including her son. they both burdened their child with a role that would overwhelm even the most trained and prepared adult then abandoned him.
douma was repeatedly failed by the same people who were supposed to care for and love him; instead they were preoccupied with what that child could do for them. so, it is not a surprise that he was the one who turned the shabana's siblings into demons, since they too were failed and abused by every adult in their lives.
despite what the shabana's siblings ended up becoming they were once faultless children who were mistreated from the start. their mother thought of them as burden, and treated them as such. gyutaro was sick and malnourished even being bullied for it, while daki was abused by her mother and exploited by other adults for her beauty.
the adults in their lives took advantage of gyutaro to clean up their mess until he became too violent for them then we see how they had no consideration when it came to getting rid of him. daki was used for her beauty despite her tender age and then cruelly discarded away and easily replaced. up to that point of their lives they hadn't been given kindness or anything really and only viewed in terms of how useful they are to the adults in their lives.
the three of them were once children who were taught that the world functions on give and take basis. that they needed to give (douma) and take (the shabana) in order to survive. that is the same pattern they followed as demons. douma gave his followers "eternity" by eating them and the siblings took and took from others to sustain themselves and raise in the ranks. in both situations there was an imbalance and focus on only one part of the equation. in both situations their immediate group suffered at the hands of the monster they indirectly created, if the upper ranks were treated or raised with love and care, things might have turned up differently.

A new chapter of Pitiful Beings is out !!! I've made a drawing of Miyuki and of Reika and her friends that I want to share !
Some facts about my Kny demon oc, Higanbana
Despite being a very old demon (she is over 400 years old) Higanbana speaks in a modern (for the taisho era) way ! That is due to Higanbana’s favorite hobby besides taking care of her garden of demonic flowers created by her bda, that being reading. She is an avid reader with a huge collection of books and is always looking for new ones, so through reading she learned and was able to accompany how language evolved ! She specially loves poetry and has invaded noble homes just to eat the people there and steal their books.
Higanbana’s favorite body part to eat are brains due to how “sweet” they are, in her words. She is naturally someone who loves sweet foods ever since she was human, so as a demon she likes best to eat the parts of the body that concentrates sugar.
Higanbana, prior to her and Douma falling in love and her moving to live with him in the Eternal Paradise cult, had as her lair an abandoned Shinto shrine that she turned into her living garden, full of her demonic plants, her books and anything else she collected over her many years as a demon. She would eat any human who got too close to it and only left the lair in order to hunt or if Muzan gave her a mission, she is quite antisocial but secretly love receiving attention and admiration.
Despite being a very powerful demon with very useful abilities, Higanbana was never nominated as a kizuki by Muzan because he resents her for losing the seer powers she had as a human when he turned her into a demon, powers granted to her by coming into contact with the blue spider lily while in her mother’s womb, powers that would have leaden Muzan to find the flower and possibly conquer the sun. Strength wise, Higanbana is on the same level as Gyokko.
The demonic flowers Higanbana create can produce many different type of pollen, each with its own effects. Sleep pollen makes people fall asleep; calming pollen makes people calm, docile and numbs their minds; hallucinogenic pollen gives people terrible illusions and poison pollen poisons people and there are even more ! Her pollen only works on humans … with a single exception .Higanbana often relies too much on her plants to fight and tries to keep as much distance between herself and her opponent as possible, so basically she is zoner. In close range her best advantage is her katana, though she isn’t the greatest swordswoman, her technique resembles flower breathing.
Higanbana’s very special ability is that she can see if other people’s actions will have good or bad consequences on themselves or others. In her perception, when someone is about to do some action, she can see an aura around them, and if that person is about to make such action to someone, she can see aura around that other person as well. The color of the aura represents of the action will be beneficial or not, blue means good consequence and red means bad consequence. The size of the aura signifies how big will be the consequence, and the place of the aura represents the place affected. It’s a form of precognition, but it only works with physical actions, not with the emotions or words, and it she can only see how others will be affected, not herself.
She is bossy and Douma likes being bossed around by her. They are a case of coworkers to friends to lovers, with Douma falling first, in a very overwhelming way since it happened at the same time he started feeling emotions. Higanbana rejected his advances for months not because she didn’t like him and didn’t feel attracted by him, but because she couldn’t accept herself falling in love and having a relationship, she couldn’t accept he actually loved her. It was only after he proved himself multiple times that Higanbana defenses fell and she accepted she was in love with him too, so they got together ! Douma insists on calling her his wife even though they aren’t married, because in his words “We will be, someday, hopefully soon.” He has multiple nicknames for her, while she tends to stick with “dearest”.
Greek myth fandom would be a better place if people understood that, while yes, you are allowed to have fun with this characters, and yes, you don't need to be an expert to enjoy myths and re-tellings.
Please, please! Never forget that this is not *just a piece of media* like a book or a movie
This is cultural heritage of the Greeks, this stories are one of the few ways we have to look back at how things were for humans thousands of years ago. This stories matter in a religious, cultural, academic and anthropological context.
You can call any of the greek gods your blorbo, but remember that your blorbo is still a god that is currently still part of an active religion.
So what i'm trying to say is: Be respectful. Understand why people can and have the right to get mad if some writer goes "My re-telling is 100% accurate and it's the best version of the story" and then it isn't.
Is okey to admitt you're not going the full lenght with accuracy, that will always be better than claiming you have "corrected" this stories as if they were broken to begin with. They are not, they are what they are meant to be: Cautionary tales, folk stories, and a peek into the culture of a civilization that lived hundreds of years ago.
Thanks for coming to my ted talk
