This is a two-fold benefit music festival with the Los Angeles LGBT Center + Los Angeles Animal Services as beneficiaries.

Get ready for a weekend of live music featuring performances by Dakotah Faye, TuiDaShark, and The Band Famous, plus music by DJs Gabriel Diggs, Astrolex, Tee Time, and more special guests TBA!

International DJ Gabriel Diggs, who has produced music for John Legend, Usher, Steve Aoki, and Sarah McLachlan to name a few, and who DJs internationally including in Ibiza, Brazil, Berlin, and all over Los Angeles. He was with us for the “Live + Follow Your Dreams” Benefit Music Festival and we are thrilled to have him back with us for both nights of the “One Love Fur All” GLBTQ+ and LA Animal Services Benefit Music Festival.

We will also have with us Minneapolis-based DJ Astrolex on both nights. Besides being a kick-ass DJ, she is also a great photographer and artist, and she is the official HR for The Band Famous productions and performances, so feel free to reach out to her with any questions regarding this event. Besides live music performances and a kick-ass dance party with the best DJs one could wish for, we will have some live comedy - more details coming soon on that - along with body painting by the artist Zander, aka Jacob Alexander Figueroa of The Band Famous, who will be body painting Norell, who will be performing in body paint!

Did we mention we will have stand up comedy? Maw Kitty - whom you may know from “America’s Got Talent”, “Bubbies Know Best”, or Tom Green’s “Webovision” - will be performing some live stand up comedy for us on Saturday, March 28th! DJ Tee Time will be back rocking with us on the 28th as well!

To further satisfy your appetites, we will even have Cemitas Tepeaca Puebla food truck on location during our benefit music festival weekend.

It’s going to be a colorful weekend raising awareness and proceeds for two causes that are close to our heart: the Los Angeles LGBT Center, and the Los Angeles Animal Services.

To the Models of the World

We have got to stand up and look out for another because as much as there is beauty and kindness and compassion in this world, there is equally bigotry, cruelty, and hate.

I have been a freelance model for over ten years now, maybe eleven or more, I can't quite remember.

I am blessed and fortunate that I have always been a quick learner, a clever investigator that could not only read between the lines, but pick up on the energy about many a friend or foe that has approached me in some way, shape, or form over the years.

Some times I would give them the benefit of the doubt, but I learned quickly that to do so is to put yourself at risk, and we are so very valuable, every single one of us, that no one should have to settle for anything less than what feels good to them. You see, your natural instincts – that gut feeling? It is generally quite accurate, your body will speak to you, your intuition, your higher soul – however you phrase it, you are presented with information at all times and you must learn how to work with it or risk being swept away with the tide. You tighten your steers, you steady your ship, and you pay attention to even the subtle changes of the wind. You adapt, you evolve, you grow, you transform. Such is the journey of life, the very purpose we all share in common, to live and to learn.

So I am here writing this today for all of you, in the hopes that what I have learned, what I have adjusted to from every experience along the way, may help serve as some form of guidance or affirmation to you on your individual journeys.

Now, as a freelance model there are several opportunities that will present themselves to you, and while they may not always be consistent and stable as a nine to five type job, they will always be there. One can model for a painter, an art class, a photographer – you get the idea. I am going to share this next bit of information in the hopes that you listen and absorb what I have to say very carefully.

First of all, as a model, you are always in control. It is your choice. You set your boundaries and you better stick to them or you may very well be chewed up and spit out, tossed aside like some objectified thing not worthy of a second thought. Okay, I realize that sounds harsh, but seriously there are some major scumbags out there. 

I have never, and I will never attend a shoot of any kind without doing my research. First and foremost, just as you would for any other kind of job for which you would interview for, you better dig and dig hard to figure out who it is that may be your potential employer. There are some very real and terrifying things that could be at stake if you don't do your homework. Never, I repeat never walk blindly into a situation because people are unpredictable and the world is not all rainbows and butterflies. Some people are downright vicious. But if you do your research, if you listen to any flags that may arise in the process, you may very well dodge every single bullet that comes your way.

Now I also recommend having a trusted friend that will escort you to any and even every gig or shoot to insure your safety – you have that inherent right. Also, an escort is something that is standard protocol in the industry. Sure, if a photographer or artist is renowned and has a respected reputation with endless credentials and references, you may very well be safe to go into a situation alone. But also remember that wolves disguise themselves in sheep's clothing, and even celebrity photographers have been known to be the scummiest of the lot of them.

I will divulge a bit more information on my personal experience and give background as to why I feel I am as good a spokesperson as any to educate and enlighten on this subject. I have done all kinds of modeling, everything from commercial photography, fashion and high fashion, portrait, hair and makeup / beauty shots, and art modeling, to swimwear, lingerie, body painting, artistic nude and "erotic".

I put erotic in quotations because it means different things to different people. Most people would agree – at least I've heard it time and again – that when one thinks of the term "erotic" they think of "sex". It is true that any type of erotic image be deemed so because it is provocative in nature that it stimulates or arouses a sexual reaction in the recipient taking it in. Erotic could mean that no explicit body parts are showing in the completed image, or it could be something you would find in a Hustler or Penthouse magazine. The point being, it is subjective, as they say, "beauty is in the eye of the beholder" – such is the way erotic imagery is interpreted. 

Because art nude and erotic modeling is much more sensual, personal, and intimate in nature, this is not the type of work that I have available to the public eye. I have one or two images as a sample that I am able to pull it off for those who wish to hire me for these genres, but I do not see the need to put myself on display in that way. I mean absolutely no disrespect to those who do, to each his or her own. Very few have seen remnants of my modeling experiences in these genres and as a result many may question my repertoire to be able to speak on the very subject. The world is full of pigs and snakes that would try to coerce or manipulate me into "proving" myself – well I have nothing to prove because I know me better than anyone.

I have private albums for my most intimate work and I grant passwords to parties interested in seeing them whether they plan on hiring me or not; however, I do not ever give the passwords out for free. This isn't simply because I am "selling" myself, but I will also say on that note because I know some people will think of it as such that there is a very big difference between "selling" and "selling out".

One reason I do this is to make sure that those inquiring to view them are over the age of 18 years old by way of a small "donation" – if you will – with a credit card. I am not trying to "show my body off" to minors. Another reason is that if I gave the passwords out for free it would null the point of my having the albums private to begin with. I keep them private because I respect myself as an artist, no one else has to, but I do.

Some people who have inquired to see them over the years have been insulted and reacted with hostility towards me that I ask for a $5.00 donation or down payment of booking me per album – I have one for Artistic Nudes, and one for Erotica.

Others respect and understand my position as an artist and are more than happy to support me and thus gain access to my more personal work.

This method also helps me to weed out the picture collectors. Someone may say they wish to hire me and pay me for my experience and professionalism for an artistic nude or erotic shoot; however, until actions have proven otherwise I have only their "word" to rely on and the simple fact of the matter is they may just wish to see me naked and guess what? I will never hear from them once they get what they want.

That's just it – some people are all talk. Some people – and I've found this especially true among artists, models, photographers and the like – are just flakes, plain as day. Many people are bullshitters in the modeling industry, and I would liken it is about the same in every walk of life but I do see it as a more frequent reality in this particular realm of occupation.

Some people are simply full of shit. You get better at recognizing them the more you run into them because you just eventually "know" by experience. It's called wisdom. 

So I am here to encourage all women – and men for that matter –everywhere, don't ever let someone make you feel less of a person because of your own personally defined set of boundaries. You have every right, it is your inherent right to set boundaries that feel good to you. No one else has a right to the way that you live your life. That's your free will. If you want to have nothing but naked pictures up of you because you feel liberated and beautifully human, then you do it and hold your head high. That's a beautiful thing. To be human and be able to accept, embrace and love oneself is the epitome of love in its purest form. One cannot fully love another until one can fully love oneself.

I encourage you all to stand firm and strong in your personal convictions. Don't ever give away your personal power to another human being. You are worth more than that. If someone doesn't see how valuable you are, how valuable we all are, well let us pray that his or her vision of the world improves. We all deserve respect, but if you don't respect yourself you cannot expect anyone else to either. 

Also, please do not agree to work with someone for an artistic or any type of photo shoot for that matter unless you get everything in writing. People will undermine you at some point or turn and you may never see it coming, it's better to just expect it and prepare for it so that you do not get tripped up when it happens. Not everyone has other peoples' best interests at heart. Let's face it; we live in a selfish world where it is safe to assume that many people are entirely self-motivated in nature. You have to protect yourself! 

Just today I looked over a contract that someone would wish for me to sign prior to accepting a paid artistic nude or erotic shoot. If I signed it blindly I would be nothing short of a fool.

Read every single word and read between the lines. If you feel that it is too complex, that it is full of jargon, then it probably is and you should seek the advice of a lawyer or someone you trust who has more experience in contractual dealings. One piece of paper, as arbitrary as it may seem, could change your life and shake up your world in ways you may have imagined not possible to do. You and I, we are vulnerable without taking precautionary measures so I cannot say it enough: be cautious!

If you get a good feeling, then go with it, but please for your own safety and wellbeing, do not disregard a bad feeling if it arises. Trust your instincts!

If you aren't sure about something, it never hurts to seek out advice or a second opinion. You may find just the affirmation you need to make the choice that is best for you.

Remember, just because someone has a camera does not make them a photographer; just because someone is willing to pay you to do something does not mean you should do it – weigh and consider everything carefully.

And just because you're willing to pose for any kind of artistry you so choose, it doesn't make you an object. You do what feels good for you, and don't let anyone try to persuade you otherwise. Avoid the folks that try to like you would the plague.

Contracts and escorts are standard protocol. Putting yourself and your well-being first is nothing to be ashamed of, most people, quality people, will respect you more as an artist and as an individual for doing so.

Take care of yourselves! Have fun, but remember that this is your life and you are the one to call the shots where that is concerned. Blessings unto you all. I wish you all the best in your personal and creative ventures! Love,

Dear Ma, I’m sure the news has reached you by now. I hear the police cars outside, their deafening sirens a welcome change from the dead silence in the classroom. I don’t think I will make it. It’s getting harder to breathe and I am feeling drowsy. I wish you were here. Fussing over me like you do when I hurt myself. You’re probably outside the school gates right now. I am hoping you can hear my thoughts. We were in English period when they stormed into the class. It all happened so fast I didn’t have time to think. They shot ma’am first. “Get under your tables” she yelled before she fell to the ground. We scrambled to hide under them. I sat still, my eyes on the floor as a pair of black shoes got closer and closer. His shoes were a lot bigger than mine. I was too afraid to look at his face. He shot me twice. One in each leg. I fell to the floor in seconds. Ahmed who sat beside me screamed when he saw the blood oozing out of my legs. They shot him in the chest thrice. No one screamed after that. I lay very still and pressed my eyes shut. Pretending to be dead as I waited to get shot again. Each time I heard a gunshot, I would hold my breath and wait for the pain. But they didn’t shoot me again. “We’re done here. Keep moving” someone said. Their footsteps ringing in my head long after they were gone. I lay there, looking around the classroom. The silence interrupted only by the sound of the fan, that continued to spin as if nothing had happened. You know Ma, I realise that lives have no value. It makes me wonder why you insisted that I finish my homework before school. Why you spent hours teaching me geometry. Why you get angry when I chew loudly. Doesn’t it seem like such a waste now? To spend our time on petty things, like Potassium’s position in the periodic table, learning my mother tongue, or remembering to be a gentleman. None of it could save me. At dinner yesterday, you told me not to eat another jamun. That if I take care of my health, I would live a long life. Ma, it seems so ridiculous now, that we celebrated my birthday last week. The cake, the presents, my favourite caramel pudding. Like a prank we didn’t know we were falling for. In these 5 minutes I realised, that the world has no appreciation for beauty. For friendship. For laughter. It didn’t matter to them that Zara was to perform for us after class this afternoon. That Ahmed and I planned on buying ice-cream after school. That Samah was going to get the prize for being the Science topper. Everyone died anyway. You know ma, we invest in our lives with such a relentless passion, not once realising how fragile it is. You drive me to music class twice a week. Mark sums on my textbook for me to answer. You tell me to remember to be polite, learn my lessons and eat healthy. But ma, no one was spared. Not even the ones who finished their breakfast. The ones who handed in their homework. Or the ones who prayed this morning. Ma, I don’t think I can stay awake much longer. And I think I will breathe my last, lying on this battlefield of scattered bodies, shoes and stationery. My English textbook lies beside me on the floor. Still open on the same page it was at when they stormed in. I close my eyes one last time, because I cannot bear to look at it any longer. Seems almost absurd now, that a world like this, could inspire poetry.

Is the Smart Album the Future of Music?

I am humbled that all of these amazing inspiring people are supporting my music project @TheBandFamous #Kickstarter (Help Build the Smart Album!).

I've listened to Atmosphere's records since way back when, and so many records I've enjoyed, from "Overcast!", "Lucy Ford", "Seven's Travels", "God Loves Ugly", and more. Even today I awoke with the lyrics in my head, "Hush little lady, don't say word or the rest of the village gonna know you're disturbed"

And aren't we all trying to find a balance?

...Even on a subconscious level his words and lyrics stir me. To have his support means more than any words.
