Ayesha, how did you figure out how your powers work?
A lot of accidents and guesswork, if I'm being honest.
I guess I was lucky that when these powers showed up, I was already working for a superhero outfit. People with powers, other people who researched them for a living. People who were understanding about it and willing to help me figure out what I was working with. I mean... mostly.
But the problem with formally testing what I can do is that I have to, you know, do it, and it involves messing around with people's brains. So, not a whole lot of people willing to let me do that in the first place — which, hey, I don't blame them! Once somebody did volunteer, we were able to set up a couple tests to try and get some insight into what was happening.
And I messed both of them up, actually. But I guess we did learn a few things.
So, here was the setup: medics on staff had me and the volunteer (a guy called Sparrow), hooked up to some equipment to measure our brain activity while I did my thing, and our friendly neighborhood empath was also there to keep track of our emotional states at the same time. I was supposed to go in, take out a memory of Sparrow writing down a poem, and recite it; there was a hard copy of the poem handy to check my work against.
The thing you gotta understand about Sparrow is that he was... an intense guy. If I'm being charitable. Scary, more like. The poem he'd written was pretty sad. Dark. And I touched him and I didn’t get the poem itself… I got why. On the second try, I got… a poem. The wrong one. A nice one, but something personal. Something he hadn’t shared with anyone.
We didn’t do a third round.
—Jeez, I’ve been rambling, sorry. But you see what I mean? Trial and error. Mostly error, it feels like. Anyway, what I have figured out so far is:
If I touch somebody skin-to-skin, I take away one of their memories. Doesn't seem to just be my hands; it'll happen if we bump shoulders in a crowd or if I kiss you on the cheek or anything. When it happens, the other person doesn't seem to feel anything, but whatever I take I'll relive right in the moment. (Well, live initially, since it's not mine. Or something.) Basically it plays out for me, first-person, the way the other person remembers it. It's trippy. Disorienting to come out of it. I kinda feel like I am the other person for a few seconds, and not me.
Uh... what else? Whatever I take seems to correspond to whatever's on my mind at the moment, as far as I can tell. I wonder why a guy writes so much dark poetry, I take a memory about some of the darkness in his life. You touch me by accident while I'm in a good mood, I figure I'll get something happy. I haven't gotten a lot of happy memories. If I really focus and have an idea of what I'm looking for, I'm pretty sure I could get something specific. Also, I think the, like, duration of the touch matters. Quick touch equals a short snippet of memory, longer contact equals taking more away. Haven't really tested that theory, and not sure how much I want to.
Oh! And even though take is the default setting, I do seem to be able to give memories back to people. It's... harder. I have to really, really, really focus in on the memory I want to give away. And it really does sort of feel like I'm pulling something out of my brain; there's this sort of snap I can feel when it goes, and usually a headache after. I dunno why I feel it when other people don't seem to. Universe hates me, maybe.
So, there you go. Mindtheft, memory transference, psychomancy... whatever you wanna call it.
