if you want to actually materially address child abuse, the single most important thing you can do to start is give children the legally enforceable right to leave any situation they no longer want to be in.

church, extracurriculars, summer camps, school classes, their biological family's houses. notably, these are the places that child abuse is enabled by the child's inability to just fucking leave if they need to. they can't walk out of church if their youth pastor touches them inappropriately; they'll get punished for leaving. if they walk out of their house because their dad hits them, the cops pick them up and give them right back to their dad.

children need the legal autonomy to leave abusive situations in order to even begin to usefully materially address child abuse.

Denji (CSM) & Anthy (RGU) - their cPTSD.

NOTE: I’m not a medical professional, I’m doing this thread because I have cPTSD & Denji/Anthy are my favorite characters!

What is Complex PTSD?

C-PTSD is a form of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder that forms on complex trauma. A lot of the times it’s a repetitive & long-term trauma starting in childhood.

It is not a recognized condition under DSM-5 (2013) but it is under ICD-11 (2018), so I’ll be using ICD criteria for this thread. To diagnose Complex Post Traumatic Stress Disorder you need to fulfill standard criteria for PTSD + 3 additional ones known as Disturbances In Self Organization. (DSO) The symptoms must stay up for at least a few weeks.

PART 1/2: DENJI

Cw: Spoilers for all of CSM manga!

We need to establish first what happened to him. First, he starts as a 16 year old boy. He is shown living alone (besides Pochita) in systemic poverty because of debt his family left him. He was selling his organs and always hungry. Even though his financial situation improved, he endured tons of CSA/sexual abuse (p.1: the man who chased him told him to become a prostitute to pay off his debt, Himeno (she initiated sex while she was an adult & he was a minor), Makima (an Incestuous mother figure using her sexuality to further her goals & grooming denji), Reze (Don’t be mad at me because I LOVE DenReze, however I cannot say that second kiss after she bit off his tongue was consensual at all!) & in p.2: Fumiko (she sexually humiliated him & molested him), Yoru (whom raped both Denji & Asa)), he’s also know for killing his extremely abusive alcoholic father. Makima gave him the life he wanted and took it away from him, by for example: killing his family. It is by definition repetitive & long-term trauma starting in childhood. This all is grounds which he could be diagnosed with (c)PTSD. What about his symptoms?

PTSD symptoms

Intrusions or re-experiencing the event (such as intrusive memories, repetitive play in which the events or aspects of it are expressed, nightmares, flashbacks, distress triggered by reminders of the event(s))

Denji in Part. 2 remembers Power & Aki after trying to forget about them for so long because of the hurt their death has caused him. (Why wouldn’t he? They died for him…) In one panel he’s shown screaming at the flashback of their death specifically — Aki as the gun devil & Power with his birthday cake which was soon after killed by Makima.

While he was running around in the aging devils’ forest, he started drowning and remembering everything. One of the key manga panels was him talking about „how everyone in his life dies” and how he remembers Reze, especially by the smell of coffee.

Avoidance (such as avoiding thoughts, feelings or memories of the event(s), or avoiding people, places, conversations or situations associated with the event(s))

After Nayutas’ death Katana man offers Denji to go to a brothel to forget about his trauma & „relax”. Asa, rightfully, gets mad at Denji for thinking about sex in such a serious situation. Near the ruined building (brothel) he is shown to break down, he is frustrated „that he only thinks with his dick” which establishes that Denji is hypersexual and uses it to distract himself from trauma.

Arousal & reactivity or sense of current threat (such as irritability, being overly vigilant, being easily startled, concentration problems & sleep problems)

In my recent point we established that Denji is a hypersexual CSA victim and distracts himself with sex/masturbation from trauma. This point could also be applied here.

Additionally, it causes him sleeping problems. While guarding Asa, he could not fall asleep because, and I quote: „too many boners”.

He also admits to Asa that he has recurrent nightmares where he tells himself he is not worth of anything. (Makimas’ past influence)

Disturbances In Self Organization. (DSO)

Problems in affect regulation (such as marked irritability or anger, feeling emotionally numb)

In, again, Aging devils’ forest is shown to run around which symbolized him spiraling due to amount of trauma he went through. He remembers his old family whom died for him, and wants a new family, Denji sums it up: „and if they die too… I’ll find a new family! Tough luck, bad guys! I can make a perpetual motion machine!” which definitely counts as emotional numbness.

Beliefs about oneself as diminished, defeated or worthless accompanied by feelings of shame, guilt or failure related to the event(s)

In the manga, it is shown explicitly Denji feels responsible for the death of his loved ones. At one point he is even shown sobbing: „Sombuh- Somebody like me… SHOULDN’T BE ALLOWED TO BE HAPPY!!!”, he tries to take responsibility for things that are not his fault while simultaneously having a low self-worth.

Difficulties in sustaining relationships or staying close to others

Denji misunderstands affection and considers it sex, especially early on. He says „he would not be sad if they died” about Aki & Power at first and later he had no idea why he stayed at home for Power instead of going on a trip with Makima. After their deaths, he is shown not want to think, he stays with Makima (again — his groomer & molestor) at all times. In part 2 he is hesitant to trust others, highlighted by the conversation he has with himself after Fumiko sexually humiliated him „I do not fall for this anymore”. He is also not interested in taking Nayuta in, at first.

In my conclusion - Denji fits the criteria for cPTSD.

PART 2/2 of the thread: ANTHY

Just like with Denji, we will be establishing what happened to her. She is a 14 year old girl through the TV anime series. She is a Rose Bride - which we all know, under Ohtoris’ patriarchal system means a feminine ideal. She fulfills the role of a woman & needs to show maturity, submit herself to people and accept abuse. This alone, is a horrible burden on a child. Her role as a racialized girl is also to be a witch. She „stole” Dios away from the people who needed him and is supposed to be punished by being stabbed by swords of hatred. Through the series, she is an object (not a person) to be fought over in duels. She is repeatedly raped & experiences incest. Akio, as her brother (& also her father figure) does anything he wants to her (CSA), and it happens every single week. Nanami bullies her, Miki objectifies her, Saionji is physically abusive while she is engaged to him, Juri slaps her too, She is raped by Kozue, Utena slut shames her after she finds out about Akio & Anthys relationship. She’s a victim of racism, misogyny & lesbophobia. Her trauma is called „eternal”. All this drives her to a suicide attempt. How does that relate to her cPTSD?

PTSD symptoms

In the anime we see Anthy get stabbed by swords of hatred repeatedly at different ages. I’m willing to argue Anthy gets triggered by this memory because the scene playing out a lot of the time could be a metaphor for a flashback. She also lives in a constant nightmare, especially thanks to Akio. She is distressed by his (& others) abuse and responds in a complicated way — she oscillates between love and hate for her close ones. Repetitive play for Anthy may mean manipulating participants into duels and playing the role of the Rose Bride.

Avoidance (such as avoiding thoughts, feelings or memories of the event(s), or avoiding people, places, conversations or situations associated with the event(s))

Anthy Himemiya is known to avoid reality. Her phone conversation with Akio highlights this — after being asked „Are you watching the stars?”, she responds: „I do not want to stare at REAL stars”. I’m even willing to say she is a maladaptive daydreamer.

She constantly tries to rationalize her oppression by convincing herself „this is the role she must fulfill” and is as passive as possible. She holds onto Dios as the ideal, what he was in their childhood. She moves in right with Utena once Utena „wins” her in the duel and is shown to be uncomfortable near Akio, rightfully so, as for the one time when she tried to rebel against him/avoid him she got punished for it.

After quitting the abusive relationship she had with Saionji, she even mocks him „You seem upset, Saionji”, showing relief that she is out of that situation.

She mocks her abusers or simply shows a tiny bit of discomfort because she is not able to leave, but indubitably she avoids reality at all costs.

Arousal & reactivity or sense of current threat (such as irritability, being overly vigilant, being easily startled, concentration problems & sleep problems)

Anthy is overly vigilant in the sense that she analyzes her surroundings. She knows what is happening with Utena once she stops wearing her butch uniforms and „accepts” (for a little while) being feminine. She knows what Nanami is going through because they are similar in many ways. Her micro-expressions are noticeable in the anime & are extremely relevant to the plot.

Her concentration problems relate to the fact that she does not care about learning. She has bad grades and why would she learn in schools if she’s technically already an „adult” by the role?

Disturbances In Self Organization. (DSO)

Problems in affect regulation (such as marked irritability or anger, feeling emotionally numb)

Anthy is shown to be „numb” to her suffering because of it being an „eternal” aspect of her character. She submits, she does not object. Her trying to avoid reality is EXACTLY what helps her be numbed to her circumstances. Rose bride is Anthy, and Anthy is a Rose Bride. She withstands everything mentioned about her abuse in the beginning.

Beliefs about oneself as diminished, defeated or worthless accompanied by feelings of shame, guilt or failure related to the event(s)

Anthy does not ever say to Utena what Akio does to her! She feels immense guilty & shame upon being molested by her family member, by the „ideal patriarchal man”. She shows it to Utena because the words won’t escape her mouth.

Utena tackles it horribly and slut shames her.

Right after Anthys’ suicide attempt in episode 37/38, she talks with Utena. Her hair is down which symbolizes her being honest & vulnerable with herself and/or others. Anthy Himemiya says: „I tricked you, miss Utena…”, in fact Anthys’ acceptance of her reality is connected to her feeling worthless.

Difficulties in sustaining relationships or staying close to others

Anthy does not have friends, besides Utena. All of the students at Ohtori perpetuate some sort of patriarchal/racialized violence onto her (which does not exclude Utena!). After she attempted suicide, she wanted Utena to run away „while she can”. She runs from any connections, if anyone displays kindness to her, Himemiya seems to be terrified of engaging with them. Which is a sad, learned behavior connected to the abuse.

In my conclusion - Anthy fits the criteria for cPTSD.
