He raised his brows, pulling back from her cold finger tips. “I am not a game for when someone is bored.” Did that really happen? He thought it was a dream. “It’s not like I woke up and just decided to do it. You don’t my life and what I’ve been through.”

“I don’t need too. You humans are all the same.” She shrugged, turning to mess with the appliances in his kitchen. “And since I saved your life, you technically owe me. Why would I leave now?”

She needed a human to anchor herself to before she was dragged back to hell. Duncan seemed like and okay person to have to be stuck around for a while.

He had to be dreaming…. he wrinkled his nose, keeping his eyes on Gaia. “A demon? Regardless of what you are, you are in my house and you need to leave.” He said, pushing his hair back. “I don’t know how you came in, but please find your way out.”

“No thanks, I’m bored and you seem like just the thing to curb that boredom.” Gaia approaches him languidly and touched his cheek. “Besides, you seem to need a change of pace too. Normally people don’t go throwing themselves off roofs.”

He rubbed his eyes, stepping back as he saw the woman from earlier. “Who the fuck are you?” He furrowed his brows, blinking. He thought she was in a dream. “And what are you doing here?” How did she get in? He looked over at his door and saw it still locked.

“I’m just the cool demon that saved your ass tonight, you’re welcome by the way.” She grinned, leaning her hip against the bar in the kitchen as they spoke. She was unnaturally still and relaxed, being alive for so long can stripe someone of human mannerisms.

A few hours passed before he stirred awake. He rubbed the back of his head, groaning. He felt sore as he sat up slowly, looking around. How long has he been out for? He wasn’t sure if he was dreaming or what. He remembered walking up to the roof and jumping. And a woman was there. Taunting him in a way. Was that real? It couldn’t. He was in bed. He got out of bed, pulling his coat off. He walked towards his kitchen to get a drink.

Gaia was snooping through his stuff in his apartment. He was a writer, it was fairly obvious. His apartment wasn’t obscenely messy. She was checking what he had in his fridge when he walked in. She didn’t think he’d be awake so soon. “‘Morning, sunshine.” She gave him a small finger wave. “Thinking of taking anymore leaps of faith because I’m down.”

He felt his back hit against soft cusion, opening his eyes to see strangers worried faces looking down at him. Did he make it? Was it really that painless? He looked around a bit, feeling a little lightheaded as he stood up. He could feel his legs wiggle a bit like jelly, trying to find his ground. He looked over to see the woman from the roof, and that was the last thing he saw before he passed out.

The humans prepared to take him to a hospital butnshe quickly waved that idea away. She took Duncan back to his apartment after she found out which door was his. After gently dropping him on his bed, she left him to explore his space and learn about him. He seemed like a tortured soul; he should be fun to follow around for a little while until she finds something else exciting.

“Oh, bye then.” She waved. She knew he’d be safe with the contraption the humans put below them to catch the man. She decided to meet him at the bottom and transported herself to the sidewalk. Gaia stood and watched him fall while the crowd around her gasped and shrieked in shock. She winced at the sound of impact and the humans around the inflatable device worked to help Duncan off and safely onto the sidewalk.

He moved his face away as she pinched his cheek, his brows furrowing. He felt some of the dark thoughts lift from his person, a little comforted. “Old enough for you to not talk to me like a child.” He wasn’t assumed like she was about the action.

“No you’re not.” She chuckled, thinking about how old she was. She wasn’t crazy old like some of the others she knew, but she knew she was quite a bit older than this man. “Now,” she glanced at the people on the ground and the contraption they had to catch Duncan if he fell. “You still thinking about killing yourself?” She wondered how much work she had to do. It was getting boring.

What? He looked at her confused by her statement. “If that was the case, I wouldn’t be up here at 3 AM on the edge of a building talking to you. And whatever you mean by humans living longer, maybe they should stop and just let people die when they should. There’s too many.” He needs to stop thinking and just do. “I just need to stop overthinking and do. Go through with it. Feel… anything.”

“So you’re not even curious about what could’ve been if you hadn’t had come up to this roof tonight. All the things you’re going to miss. Sounds like you’re too afraid of change. Willingly staying stuck in sadness.” Keeping him distracted was harder than she thought. She found herself feeling bad for this human. She needed to talk to someone and fast. She should never be able to empathize with a human.

He felt her ice touch, grabbing her wrist at the sudden shock. He pulled away from her, rubbing the back of his neck. “What was that?” He rubbed the skin, lifting his brows at her. Why wouldn’t she leave him alone? “There is no reason for me to live. I have no family, my friends might as well not care, I live in a shitty apartment and no one will miss me. Give me one good reason to continue on.”

That was a hard ass question. Because even she didn’t want to live for all eternity. “There is no real reason. Honestly I should be trying to convince you to do it.” At least then she’d get his soul because it would be up for grabs. “But I’m sure you’ll could pull your life together before you die. Humans have been living longer now I heard so you have plenty of time.”

You don’t know me.” He felr his chest become heavy, pushing her to the side. “It’s easy to talk like that when you haven’t walked in the others shoes. You don’t know how I feel.” He looked down at the ground, seeing groups of people gathered below.

The authorities were soon next to come. She grabbed him by the back of his neck and pulled him back away from the ledge before he could get closer. She wasn’t about to just let him walk off after she’s spent this much time on him. “Not so fast kid.” She whispered in his ear.

They humans below worked on inflating something below the building to catch the man in front of her if he jumped.

He watched her, stepping back as she touched him. “Uh, hello Gaia.” He didn’t know why she was so interested in him. “Why is your name ironic?” He might as well entertain her until she stepped out of his way. He didn’t realize the people gathering below, wondering what those people up on the building were doing.

“You’ll find out later.” She can’t just tell him. He’d freak out and take a dive over the side of the building. “So what job do you have that is so miserable you have to go building hopping in the middle of the night?” Her face inches closer to his as her almost incandescent green eyes studied his face.

He tried stepping forward when she appeared, confused. This stranger wasn’t letting him alone. “What are you talking about? I don’t know you and you don’t know me.” He didn’t know whether to be mad or kind of grateful that this person was so adamant about him not jumping.

“Hey, hey, you stand still Duncan.” She warned, pushing him back with her index finger in the middle of his chest. She didn’t want him to jump yet. She found him interesting. There was a lot of darkness surrounding him. “My name is Gaia. It’s a name that is only a tad ironic.”

“It’s not that simple. If only it was. I did everything I was told to. Therapy, medication, exercise, healthy diet, hypnotism even. Nothing makes the pain go away.” He shook a bit as she wrapped her arm around him, looking back at her. “It’s Duncan.” He didn’t know why this woman even cared. He shrugged his shoulders to try to get her off of him

She stepped in front of him, so her front was to his and her back to the empty air. She could hear what was happening below. Someone called for help and it would come soon. She continued to distract him. “We could go try a few things.” She murmured teasingly. Maybe if she made him angry he’d direct his negative energy at him and she could take some of it. It’d be a bit of a snack. She could use it as payment for saving his life.
