Carl Tanzler, a radiologist from Key West, Florida, became infatuated with Elena Milagro Hoyos, who was one of his patients. When she died of tuberculosis in 1931, he had a mausoleum built for her with the approval of her parents. He didn’t like the idea of her decomposing underground. He would visit her tomb every night until his obsession overcame him and he took her body home with him and kept her in his bed. He attempted to restore her body by replacing her skin with plaster. He brought her a full wardrobe and perfume. It wasn’t until 1940, when one of Elena’s sisters became suspicious, that his necrophilia came to light. She went to his house to question him and found her corpse lying in his bed, wearing an elegant dress, almost fully decomposed. Tanzler was later arrested and charged with “wantonly and maliciously destroying a grave and removing a body without authorization,” but he was ultimately released, as the statute of limitations on the crime had expired.
