Chemise Sewalong January 2025

Step Zero: Materials

Here's a list of materials in advance to give people the time to find fabric. We’ll do some measurements so we know how much fabric we need and get the preliminaries out of the way.

What you are definitely going to need:

Fabric

Thread

Needles

Fabric scissors

Pins

A measuring tape

A ruler or flat edge to draw straight lines

Tailor’s chalk or other method to mark lines on your fabric

What will make this project a lot easier:

An iron and ironing board  - I would say this is a necessity but not everyone has one and you can make a chemise without, it will just be harder and won’t look as crisp.

A thimble - in the long run it will make you sew quicker and be better for your hands

A sewing machine (I am intending to handsew this because not everyone has a sewing machine, but if you do have access to one and want to be done quickly, do the long seams on a sewing machine and glory in the speed of modern technology)

A cutting mat, quilting ruler and rotary cutter – This thing is all squares and triangles and quilters have got squares and triangles figured out

If you’re used to inches, keep a converter handy because my brain is used to centimeters

How much fabric do I need?

A lot. The chemise panels use the full width of the fabric. Decide if you want your chemise to knee length, to the floor or something in between. Then decide if you want full length sleeves or half sleeves.

I’m making long poofy sleeves but a kneelength skirt.

The calculation: my neck to knee is 120cm, my full arm length is 60cm shoulder to wrist (including 5cm extra for poof), so the length of fabric needed is 120+120+60=3 meters exactly.

What kind of fabric?

For the type of fabric I’d recommend cotton or linen for the historic feeling, but go with whatever brings you joy and isn’t stretchy. It needs to be light enough you can gather it up without it getting bulky and not terribly prone to fraying so you won’t go insane while sewing

Go with what is available and sparks joy as long as it’s a light fabric that gathers down nicely. (Thin sheets or table cloths can definitely be used for this). I’m going to use a fuchsia silk I’ve been saving for the airiest dress in existence.

tl:dr – procure 3 to 4 meters (145/150cm wide) of non-stretchy fabric of a lightness and colour that you would like to wear. Wash it, iron it and congratulate yourself on being super productive.

What are we making?

I don't have a sewing machine, can I still play?

Absolutely! We're going to handsew with supplemental instructions for people who want to use a sewing machine

How long will this take?

Depending on how quick we sew, about one week. It should be no more than 30 minutes per day. I think my chemise took less than a week but we'll want to pace ourselves

How will it work?

Like my shirtsleeve sewalong, I will make a post explaining the steps and people can reblog with their own work and ask questions. The goal is to get a nice little community and end up with some comfy chemises afterwards

What pattern are you using?

No pattern necessary! It's all squares and I'll share a cutting pattern where you can input your own measurements.

GREAT novelty knot for this obi shaped like a cute bat. The soft fabric must flutter a bit when you walk, making the bat wings move (LOVE!).

To shape this knot, OP used rubber bands and a sanjûihimo (3 straps elastic belt, Billy Matsunaga has a tutorial on sewing the 4 straps-variation + see how it’s used here).

THERE IS. a website. that takes 3D models with seams and pulls it apart to make a plushie pattern and informs you where things need to be edited or darts added for the best effect. and then it lets you scale it and print off your pattern. and I want to lose my MIND because I've lost steam halfway through so many plushie patterns in the mind numbing in betweens of unwrapping, copying all of the meshes down as pieces, transferring those, testing them, then finding obvious tweaks... like... this would eradicate 99% of my trial and error workflow for 3D models to plushies & MAYBE ILL FINALLY FINISH SCREAMTAIL...

Dragon Cape Hood Tutorial part 2!

Before adding these details it probably better to sew the rest of the cape together following the tutorial for the cape pattern in part 1.

This tutorial has everything you need finish the cape 

I will briefly go over how to make the button eyes and horns for the hood and how to attach them. 

The horns for this cape were made from solid model magic , which was a bad idea in hindsight. They took a while to dry and one of them cracked during the process so be careful and don’t paint your horns until they are completely dry.

Really, any method could be used to make the horns, you can make the horns out of whatever you like as long as they’re lightweight and flat on the bottom. To make sure the horns sit right try to make the points lean to the side a bit.

There was no precise method of scaling used on them either, just whatever looks good on the hood. The ones for this cape are a bit bigger than normal ones. 

Once the horns are paint and dry you can move on to attaching them.

For my cape I used snaps to attach the horns because it allows me to remove them if needed. 

*I added a fourth snap afterwards because having just 3 wasn’t stable enough, 4 or 5 snaps should do. Strong glue and epoxy was used to attach the snaps to the horns. Try on the hood to plan out where to put them. Once you find good spots for the horns to sit on you can sew the remaining snaps there, making sure they correspond with the ones on the horns.

Now, the snaps keep the horns attached to the hood, but don’t look very good around the base so I made a rim like the one in this picture to cover it up.

To make the rim, take leftover fleece from the cape and make a long strip that’s about  2 1/2” (inches) wide and long enough to wrap around each horn individually.

Fold the strip so that the two edges meet in the middle like so

You can sew or use fabric glue to keep the folds in place(I used fabric glue). Then fold the strip in half and sew/glue together.

Once secured wrap snugly around a horn to find the needed length and cut.

Attach the two ends together to make a loop, this will help cover up the base of the horn and keep it in place

If you can’t find buttons the right size then its easy to make them out of clay instead. I used model magic because it was on hand and is lightweight, paper clay and polymer clay are also good.

First off once you find a size you like make two balls of the amount of clay for each button needed before hand. This will help make sure each button is the same size.

I can’t really describe how to sculpt a button really, just find a shape you like and try to re-create it. They can be as simple as circular disks with 4 holes in them or have ridges like these.

I used various circular objects(the bottom of a cup) to indent the center then pushed the edges inward to make a rim.

Once dry all they need are a few coats of green paint and maybe gloss or varnish and they’re good to go. 

Sew them onto the hood and you’re done! Of course you can add extra details if you like or do something completely different.

So yea, that’s how to make a dragon cape.

This is black lipstick. Not any black lipstick though, its only $9.95 on etsy from a lovely store named Etherealle.

Im sure if you’ve ever purchased black lipstick before the main issue is getting something very pigmented that won’t rub off easily. Well, this is the perfect stuff. In the photo I only had to apply one layer of it and it rolled on smoothly and doesn’t feel oily or waxy at all!

I’ve taken a drink of sweet tea, kissed and  touched my lips with my fingers just before this picture,and its still black as my soul.

Not only is it the dream lipstick, Etherealle also included a small sample baggy of blush that normally costs $2.80 in their shop for free! (As if the lipstick wasnt perfect enough.)

Dragon Cape Tutorial Part 1 - The Hood

People have been asking how to make this cape so here’s a tutorial of sorts. Keep in mind that I’ve never made a tutorial before and my sewing experience consists mostly of scalemates, pillows, and some curtains; so I’m not particularly qualified either. But I’ll try my best to explain the steps.

Here’s a diagram of how the pieces will fit together. For starters, you’ll need the pattern from the following site:

FleeceFun.com (Print the Adult size) I’d recommend reading/watching their  tutorial as well.

If you don’t have much sewing experience, I strongly recommend practising sewing something simpler beforehand, as I will not be going over every single sewing precaution in this tutorial. 

The hood pattern will provide a base for the rest of the pattern pieces, which are here. (Right click to save and print them.) I made some adjustments to the pattern pieces after sewing my hood so don’t worry if the ones in the pictures don’t look exactly the same. 

You will need scissors, thread, pins, fabric chalk/marker, about 2 yards of fleece material, and about ¾ of a yard of lining fabric(preferably not fleece).

Next cut out the pattern pieces, tape the side piece to the hood piece like so:

  Trace patterns onto the fabric. Make sure to leave ½ ” seam allowance before cutting them out. For the top piece, place the side with the semi-circle indents in it on folded fabric and cut.

Cut the remaining bottom piece. 

Now pin the top piece to one of the hood pieces, right sides together, lining up the arrows on the nose-area. Then sew.

Before we sew the other side on, we need to install the spikes, which are very easy to make. You can use the ones included with the pattern pieces or make your own desired shape. 

You will need 3 regular sized spikes and two smaller ones. Sew all the spikes but leave the bottoms open so you can stuff them. Cut little triangles along curved edges to prevent unwanted creases. Square/trim the tips as well. 

Then stuff them.

Pin and sew the 3 large spikes to the holes in the top piece. Make sure they are facing the right way. Try to line up the seams of the spikes to prevent them from going crooked. You’ll probably have to hand-sew this part.

Pin the other hood piece to the other side of the top piece. Sew from the tabs on the nose to where the top part stops. It gets a little bit tricky here; make sure everything is pinned and secure before sewing. The top and the 2 side pieces should connect to form a “Y” shaped seam. Pin the last two spikes below the base of the top piece.

Pin the rest of the back and sew.

Yay! That’s the spikes done. 

Time for the nose. Pin it to the front of the hood so it lines up with the top part and follows the side to the rim of the hood.

Sew and cut notches along the creases like with the spikes. Be careful not to cut the stitching!

Flip inside-out and stuff the nose.

I added a dart along the bottom of the nose afterwards to adjust the shape, then stuffed it again before moving onto the lining.

For the lining, remove the side piece from the hood base piece and trace.

Pin and sew along the back.

Right sides together, pin the lining and the rest of the hood along the front rim.

There, now you have the basic dragon hood for your cape done! All it needs are some eyes and horns. :)

In the next part I can briefly go over making making custom buttons for this baby. (I don’t know about you but most stores never have the right size of button I need.) As for horns, I’m open to discussion!
