i know it’s late but my initial thoughts on ttmd, ttms chapter 14:

#1: i love the extreme juxtaposition of them doing all these physical things and then not kissing because it means more. they captured it so incredibly well.

#2: not even joking, the beginning was such good writing. not fic writing. writing in general. it felt like published-book material. mike’s inner world felt so fully realized, even more so than before, and so much so that descriptions of the wall and thinking felt interesting. it could also be how long we waited lol.

#3: another thing: the pacing. that’s a common theme in this fic in general, but in the beginning of this chapter in particular. what strikes me about it is the author is letting the story breathe. pacing is so important to how a story feels, and it is done so perfectly in this chapter. as someone who wants to be an editor, this is unironically gold for me to analyze because it is relatively simple (as far as word choice and vocab goes) but the ideas and themes present are so complex, and the quality of writing is undeniable.

#4: i know everyone keeps saying this but it feels so them. making up and making out in the same night and all of it is quiet and soft and of course there’s no screaming matches. it feels like it’s doing what i find a lot of byler fics lack, which is a true understanding of how their relationship works. even when they fought it wasn’t necessarily toxic, and let’s be real they were still inseparable after fighting.

#5: related to that: i didn’t really like the theories people were saying about what the rest of the night would be (mike returning to the party and getting drunker, etc) cause that didn’t sound like them….oh thesweetestdream you’ve done it again. you’ve fulfilled my expectations.

it would have been so much better for the plot if they had gone in a harry potter direction for will.

walk with me: will knows he’s connected to the hive mind, and he knows that vecna will always be able to use him if he is. nobody’s saying it, but they all know there’s a possibility of will dying if they don’t find a way to kill vecna without killing will. will resents that nobody is acknowledging that, even though they do love him (and secretly, mike is just ignoring it because he refuses to believe that will could die for good). will, because he thinks it’s the right thing to do, prepares to die, just like harry potter is passively suicidal near the end of the series. they have that in common: they’d do it for those they love.

outwardly, mike is the leader. he’s the heart. and part of that is because of will. he’s also focused on helping el get ready to defeat vecna. she’s the one he seems to be concerned about. he thinks will’s fine, or ignores the truth, and so when will’s plan is revealed, he’s taken completely by surprise. now he’s panicking to make sure will doesn’t sacrifice himself. this would highlight the difference between mike’s relationship with el and will: he unconsciously hides his emotions from el, because he thinks that what she needs is for him to be calm. but in regard to will, he lets go and is honest about some, if not all, of his feelings. he doesn’t feel the need to hold back, and he doesn’t have the capacity to hide how devastated he is by will being ready to die (a deeper look into mike’s mindset would be that will has lied to him again. he’s betrayed him. and that’s exactly what it feels like to mike).

i would go even further to say that an approach like this to will’s plotline would have explained his search for signals and advice, and his willingness to flirt with mike. this would have made so much more sense!?!??! he feels less guilty for doing these things because he thinks he’s going to die anyway, so what’s the harm, right? maybe mike would hate him for it, but he doesn’t have to deal with that if he’s dead. he believed he was being selfish, but he also believed it wouldn’t matter in the end.

so I was thinking about the rain fight (as one does), and narratively it makes sense that the rain fight happened, because we as the audience needed to know that this was will's childhood being taken further from him (destroying castle byers symbolized that, and mike made him feel like he needed to do it). I was thinking about why they wrote mike as the one to say "it's not my fault you don't like girls!" and oh my god it makes sense that it was mike. no one else could have hurt will more by saying that. the person will loved saw him as he was, in regards to his sexuality, and used it against him.
