sometimes when im low on motivation i stand a kpop photocard up on my laptop screen so that they do their little pose at me while i suffer the trials and tribulation of microsoft office suite.
being in academia so long has obliterated my understanding of what qualifies as academic writing. this is how i live my life now. what do you mean no one writes like that in the real world
my dad likes to call the stretches of time where you’re not creating “dreaming periods” and says that they’re meant to allow you to absorb all of the beauty, life, and inspiration from the things around you so that when you’re able to create again, you will have fanned your spark back into a flame. sometimes its hard to see those moments as anything but stagnation, but he always says that they’re natural and healthy and needed—things that should be embraced rather than feared.

summer of exploration.
have been thinking about career pathways lately. last summer before i graduate and shove myself out of academia into the wider world after spending so long living in its particular hierarchical structure.
found myself in a position recently where all i'm doing career wise is chasing joy and playing with life's offerings. the vaguest long term strategy, paired with this. unending sense of playfulness. playing with ideas, playing with stories, playing with knowledge. writing and working because i genuinely find it fun. introducing myself with what i love. agreeing to things just to see where they lead. leaning into my inability to be "nonchalant" about anything that even slightly interests me.
what's interesting is the response that this has gotten me. people tell me things. provide me opportunities. give me unsolicited advice and open doors i'd never knew existed. it's been two months of this and i've gotten myself into some wild rooms and collected mentors in bizarre locations. i really haven't the faintest idea what happened to get me here, but you know? i do think, just maybe, it is about joy.

Heat of summer has finally broken for just a moment, cooler front bringing with it dark storms and overcast skies. Taking the opportunity to enjoy the wind before temperatures force me indoors once more. Perhaps tonight I’ll see if the ISS is overhead.

recalling a twenty year old experiment
Twenty years ago, a sociologist of science called Harry Collins tried out an experiment. He had been researching the community of physicists who worked on gravity waves for the preceding two decades, trying to get insight into standards of proof and how experimental results were reconciled and interpreted. In furtherance of this project, he had been attending gravity waves conferences, where he was a familiar figure and had lots of friends in the community (because he talked to lots of people, physicists often sought him out to get gossip and news on what other labs were doing and seeing). The experiment was a sort of Turing test – one group of physicists came up with a list of half a dozen questions about gravity waves, and then sent them by email to both Collins and a physicist, with instructions just to answer them from general knowledge rather than looking anything up. A jury of other physicists were then given the job of deciding which set of answers had come from Collins, and which from the physicist. And all but one of the judges identified the sociologist as the physicist. Although extremely funny, this wasn’t actually meant as a practical joke; it was meant to test a serious hypothesis about expertise. Harry Collins theorised that there was a thing called “interactional expertise” (basically the ability to hold a sensible and useful conversation about a subject) which was distinct from “contributory expertise” (he didn’t actually even know enough maths to do gravity wave physics). Deep interaction with a knowledge base and literature could provide one, but it wasn’t the same thing as actually working within the field.

New and old. The new: have started dabbling in watercolor. Picked up a set of watercolor pencils on impulse; I've always wanted to learn to sketch, but the clarity of lines feed my vice of overcritiquing my learning. The perfectionist's paralysis. Painting has always been easier in that way - the medium forces a level of abstraction that helps me focus on the beauty of the craft rather than my own inexperience - but paints don't feel as portable. Stumbling on watercolor pencils, however, presents a new alleyway to explore. Hope to build a habit.
The old: returned to journaling. Much, so very much, has happened. Growth is change, and change requires loss, always. Have lost. Have changed. Have grown. Flipping through old journal entries illuminates as much, but also exposes how curiously stylized my writing is - phrases running over and into one another, fluid and interwoven, an extension of how I think. It feels impossible to unweave my thoughts from one another, combing and carding and drawing and spinning them into a single thread. Breaking tangled connections between ideas, smoothing them down into something understandable, transmittable. A necessary bargain; complexity for connection.
