DO IT FOR THE CULTURE. Ps. It's pronounced "zeen" not "zine". Lesson learnt 🙃. James Badlwin stated "Precisely at the point at which you begin to develop a conscience you must find yourself at war with your society. " And personally I felt like the burning of Grenfell Tower was a point at which people did take a long hard look at themselves and the spaces we occupy in society. And it is this type of reflection that forms and further develops the conscience. And I'm not going to go into it but there is obviously so much that can be said about the fact that it took people burning, mostly brown and black people burning in their homes, which was a council owned tower block ! But it took all of this for some parts of society to wake up and really acknowledge the reality of the type of world and the type of country we live in. The country that has a prime minister who had promised in Parliament not to use the tragedy as an excuse to check resident’s immigration status but being the queen of U-turns that she is those survivors will now be at a risk of deportation if they come forward. But like I said I won't go into that. It's rather poignant that Khadija's work at Jawaab was to do with tackling inequality. As the brilliant artist that she was, she was extremely passionate about making art more accessible to people who are generally not represented and marginalised in such scenes. And here we are at the launch of khidr zine, which is a platform for such people to be heard, and I think that’s really important. We should do what we can to amplify our voices above the din of white mediocre men. Ask the questions that need to be asked and demand answers. As the MP for Tottenham David Lammy who was a friend of Khadija's stated that the fire at Grenfell Tower was nothing more than corporate manslaughter and I don't think he could have stated it any clearer or kept it any realer. We shouldn't shy away from saying it as it is, calling out any BS when we see it and always demand justice. Have the conversations that need to be had whether that’s with your families, your colleagues or with those in power.... (Cont in comments)... (at Rich Mix London)
