Rory & Jess Parallels - First & Last Kiss (2.22 // 6.18)

It’s interesting to line up these two scenes just to look at the similarities and differences. I think it’s interesting to notice that during their first kiss, Rory is the one that instigates it and during their last kiss it’s switched, and Jess is the one that leans forward. Rory also pulls away both times, realizing that she’s with someone else. Another noteworthy point is that their positions are switched - in the first one Rory’s on the left, and in the last one she’s on the right. It seems a very fitting way to “close” their chapter, so to speak.

I think another major difference is the scenery, the clothing and the colors in general. Their first kiss happens outdoors amid a bounty of green as they’re both wearing shades of blue. It’s optimistic and speaks of new life, new love, and hope for the future. Their last kiss happens in a very neutral-colored space, while they’re dressed in grays and blacks. There’s something restrictive about the fact that it’s indoors as well…and while I can think of no more fitting a place for a kiss from these two than a publishing house, the atmosphere is more muddled and stale. 

To expand on that a little bit, their first kiss happens in a bit of a wooded area, with green trees surrounding them. Their last kiss happens in a place that has a lot of wooden furniture. Perhaps this is another way of contrasting the two scenes. The live wood vs. the dead wood.

If you watch these two scenes fully and in succession you’ll realize how similar they’re set up as well. Rory turning to see Jess from afar reversed so that Jess notices Rory from afar…the short conversation, the impromptu kiss, the pulling away, the confused look on Jess’ face, the horrified look on Rory’s, the last glance back…

2 whole seasons spent on buffy and angel and their relationship was all ruined by the buzz from 10 mins of spike and buffy. wdym all it got for you to team up with your archnemesis was being a cuck to you gf and liking the world too much for it to end.
