i commented this on another post but i do want to talk a little more at length on why the "when you have a best friend" line works for me and not in the way you might think. I love it because it is SO out of character that matt essentially dies for saying it. he faces the harshest cosmic consequence possible for that moment of sincerity, at his own hand

like jay was feeling sentimental during matt's convo with 2008 jay but i don't think he would have told his little secret without that sudden gesture of love from matt (that isn't even directly for him, but for his younger self, we don't have time for that one tho.) jay falsely thinks that honesty is on the table, just like at the end of viceland.

matt is SO unequipped for jay's brand of honesty, as always, that he immediately needs to punish him for it, ruins their lives, and at the end of the day he dies trying to fix what he thinks is the smallest possible piece of the puzzle, not even knowingly trying to return to his old life. i love it, i love to see it. don't push at that status quo matt or you will pay the price.
