Sometimes I think about that guy who explained to me that democracy doesn't work and then described to me an argument against anarchy, only he somehow confused anarchy and democracy.
His argument was thus;
"Democracy doesn't work. Democracy says there are no rules. Everyone can do what they want, there is nothing stopping them. But if, say, I wanted to rape this random woman, then I'll be infringing on her freedom so that I can do what I want. And that violates democracy."
He was more verbose about it of course. And I was stuck with him for a few more hours so I just nodded along but the entire time I was thinking, like, are you for real guy?
Anyway sometimes I think about him and marvel at how strange and terrifying the world is.
The Ronin-Inu
In the mid-twentieth century, an eccentric scientist and mathematician discovers a way to time travel. The method was costly and convoluted, not to mention horribly dangerous. It was treated as a novelty of human ingenuity and then forgotten. Both time travel and its inventor falling into obscurity...
Until the early twenty-first century, when a struggling college student reads the research papers and reinvents time travel as their college thesis. The materials, technology, and scientific knowledge of the twenty-first century is able to make up for the gaps in the original inventor's work. The college student crowdfunds the first working prototype, and is so successful that they are able to give every backer a taste or two of actual, real-world time travel.

"And I know a lot of the things I've shared in this video have been disproved or expanded on in the twelve years since its explosion in popularity, but I have to keep them in for the continuity. I'm very proud to soon become one of the foundational sources on our guy the Ronin-inu. So thank you so much for watching and, as always, see you last week!"

Entry 001: "The Word Is Smiling :)"
You feel the world is smiling at you. Every billboard, poster, and advertisement sports a friendly face. The bumpers on cars look like smiles. Strangers grin with perfect teeth. Every flower, every rainbow, every reflection in every mirror is smiling at you. Yes you, you little grumpy-face! Isn't it wonderful? Why don't you smile back, darling?

Entry 003: "Is It Raining?"
The crinkling of the metal roof under the sun sounds like raindrops. The wash of white noise from the highway sounds like the sweep of rain. The sky is ambiguously gray. The smell of ozone is in the air. Did you put the laundry in? Is it raining, or are you imagining it?
Manifestation: Audio, Apparition Intent: Apathetic Severity: 1
They say that eyes are windows to the soul.
When Archdemon Ludicrous was slain by Great Hero Relentless, it is said that his crimson eyes sparkled with mirth. As though privy to some joke known only to him. The Dread Generals, when told of their treacherous leader's demise, would devolve into an unstoppable, maddened laughter. They would laugh, and laugh, and laugh until, shaking and crying and weak from joyous giggles, they were cut down. Thus was another cycle of Archdemons and Heroes completed. And the world prepared for the next Archdemon's coming, one hundred years later.
A hundred years passed, and the Human kingdoms rallied as the Demons began to stir. A new Hero was chosen, trained, and sent off to Demon-occupied lands. For twelve years they searched the lands Above and Below, subjugating beasts and culling The Enemy, yet there was no sign of the Archdemon. The Demons themselves had their plots, but unlike before there was no linking thread, no overwhelming power or insidious hand guiding them. Merely beasts acting in their nature, sometimes aided by the greed of Man.
The Hero grew tired, had children, and settled down. Only occasionally would they sally forth to investigate cases of unrest, Demonic or otherwise. None of them showed any signs of an Archdemon's manipulations. And so retired Aimless Hero Headstrong, with nothing to show for her mantle but an era of peace unmatched by those before.
Some hundred years after Headstrong was chosen, again the Demons began to stir. Again, a Hero was chosen. And again, no Archdemon emerged for them to challenge. A hundred years later, so too did another Hero find themselves with no destiny to fulfil. And again a hundred years later. With great power and no true enemies to fight, the Heroes turned their attentions elsewhere.
Godking Hero Vital united the Human kingdoms under one Empire that broke apart a hundred years later under Rebel Hero Wistful's guidance. Curious Hero Insight furthered the advance of science and magecraft, and Archmage Hero Seeker continued their work by establishing The Library. And on and on and on. Two dozen names over two dozen centuries. A few were lost to time, a few were lost to treachery, a few lost to negligence. Some were said to be greater than any Hero before them. Some were barely more accomplished than a regular Human.
And all this time, no Archdemon rose for the Heroes to challenge.
With no champions or rulers to fight for them, the Demons fell on each other, much like the Humans did in the lands Above. Lacking a protector, many grew weak, and they were killed by Heroes looking for answers for why their destinies were incomplete.
In their desperation, the few surviving Demons, those that remained powerful, sealed away the lands Below. The Humans and their Heroes, thinking this a ploy by the first Archdemon to appear in two thousand years, found their way past the seal. And again they searched with fervor renewed. Again, they found nothing.
And so the worlds were separated. The Human lands developed, the Demon lands were banished into myth and fairytales. Along with them went the tales of the Archdemons, the truth diluted. Kept known only by dusty old tomes kept in The Library, perused only by Heroes, demonologists, and historians.
...
Nancy Miriam considered herself a demonologist, of sorts. She considered herself a lot of things. The One True Princess of Seeker Middle School, Righteous Banisher of Baths, One Who Holds The Archdemon In Her Left Eye, Best Dressed of Years 2485 Through 2496, Future Strongest Mage of the Library, and Destined Hero, among other prestigious titles.
Every day she donned her eye-patch to contain the terrible power contained within her left eye, and adjusted the frills and ribbons on her outfit to flare out all the more. And every morning she'd throw open the doors to her Office of Eternal Drudgery with all her might.
"Rejoice, mortals! For the Witch of Envy, Namiria has arrived once again to absorb your offerings of knowledge!"
Matron Heathers sighed. "Nancy... Class started five minutes ago. And don't slam the door."
Even as the rest of her fought not to wither under the stares and snickers of her classmates, beneath a patch of purest black, one ruby eye glimmered with mirth.
