A Guide to Neon Desert 5.0
by: Christopher Michael Gonzalez
With an absolutely amazing lineup, a turnout of over 30,000 fans last year and attendance expected to double, Neon Desert 5.0 is the only thing you should have planned for the Memorial Day weekend. Every musician featured deserves your attention, as do the local artists, entrepreneurs, and restaurants that have come together to make this possible. I have prepared a crash course on who is worth seeing (In my personal opinion) and when each group is playing. I've also collected the latest and greatest from each artist here on this page for the uninitiated, as well as a brief description on why they should be worth your while. In each case, I think that you will agree that the music speaks for itself.
My nefarious band of land pirates and I will be there. We will be covering the event, and if your looking for some good people to hang out with or new friends, follow the yellow brick road I am about to lay out for you.
I went to high school with some of these guys, they are extremely dedicated and talented. I'm sure many of you reading this know them personally, and its not hard to show some love for a local band of this caliber. Here's a video for their song “Pastels”.
The D.A.- Pastels

Future garage duo from Lancaster, England. Their tracks are full of thick heady beats and entrancing melodies. “Gold”, one of their more popular songs, captures and distills this essence.

8:00- 9:00: People Under the Stairs
“Underground” hip-hop legends out of Los Angeles, Califronia that have been at it since 1997. These guys handle every facet of their music production, resulting in a smooth riding experience that hails back to the time of the early 90's hip-hop greats. Try out “San Francisco Knights”

8:45- 9:45: Slightly Stoopid
These dudes describe their music as "a fusion of folk, rock, reggae and blues with hip-hop, funk, metal and punk.". They are from Ocean Beach, California, and I couldn’t think of a more suiting environment to produce something like this. Here they are live from The Catalyst with “Anywhere I Go”

9:45-10:45: Robert Delong
Indietronica artist Robert Delong released his latest EP in November of last year. If I were to describe him to a newcomer, I would say he sounds like a combination of Chet Faker and The Postal Service. Dark and catchy, here's the single “Long Way Down” from the identically named EP.

10:45- 11:45: Cypress Hill
If I have to explain why Cypress Hill is worth checking out you need to reevaluate your life. Here's one of his classics “Hits From the Bong”.
After reading that statement, perhaps I need to reevaluate my life.

This artist is considered to be responsible for the rise of the “chillwave” movement, and this particular song has accompanied me on many a long night playing Grand Theft Auto V. Simultaneously dancy, laid back and insightful here's their aptly named single “So Many Details”.

Apparently this guy left his job as an engineer to pursue a career in music, and you should be happy that he did. As a millennial, the following is a conglomeration of a ton of the stuff I grew up with. Perfect for a high school reunion or a riot, here is his full album “Night Ripper”
Girl Talk- Night Ripper

This is where things begin to get complicated. I’m going to see every one of these artists, and despite their slightly overlapping schedules you should make the effort to do so as well. If it comes down to having to choose, there is no wrong answer.
English musical renaissance man Christopher Taylor hails from Vienna, Austria. I cannot stress how much I enjoy this guys music. Everyone whom I have shown agrees as well. If your a fan of The Weekend, SBTRKT, or Bonobo you will love this. Here is my favorite “Bloodflows”
SOHN- Bloodflows

6:30-7:30: Tokyo Police Club
Bona fied indie rock in the best way, Tokyo Police Club visits us from Ontario, Canada. If you went to high school in the mid 2000's stuff like this dominated the mix CD's you gave to your crushes. They are like a slightly more melancholy version of The Strokes, and I believe this song captures the pinnacle of their talent. Here is “Frankenstein”.
Tokyo Police Club- Frankenstein

Def Jam recording artist from Meridian, Mississippi, King Remembered In Time has produced a ton of music over the past ten years on his way to critical acclaim. Here is his song “Cadillactica”, if you don’t get it, ask your grandparents, they understand.

Ill admit, I’ve been a fan of this guy for a sec. As exaggerated as it may sound his lyrics represent both his extreme arrogance and a scathing criticism of many of the motivations which drive modern American youth. I feel that this can best be observed in the following song, here is “Tumblr Girls”
Slightly NSFW, although a few boobs never hurt anyone.
G-Eazy- Tumblr Girls

Now, despite your potential perception of me as a music snob, I'm not a big fan of any of the new wave groups that undoubtedly influenced this band. I would actually have to say that these guys take the whole genre and produce something better. This is a group which you definitely cannot miss. Here is the provocative video for their lovely song “Days”.

With 3 albums that reached the #1 position on Billboard charts with each successive release, J Cole has proven to be a dominate force in the world of Hip-Hop. He lists Tupac, Eminem and Nas as being his biggest musical influences, truthfully he reminds me of early Kanye West. His lyrics tend to carry a certain amount of personal weight to them, and the B-sides on his albums bear what is for the most part a positive message. Here is a single “G.O.M.D” off his latest album.
J Cole- G.O.M.D

Grammy nominated and hyper-prolific, Kaskade has produced hundreds of songs that you have either heard on the radio, Pandora, Spotify, or any nightclub here in El Paso. Seriously, this guy has released music seemingly non-stop since his debut in 2001. His resume does all the talking. Here is my favorite, and perhaps undoubtedly the song that skyrocketed both himself and his collaborator Deadmau5 to mainstream stardom “I Remember”.
Kaskade- I Remember

If you told me these guys had been around since 1967 I would probably believe you. They remind me of an even more heavily acid fueled version of The Beatles. Its like they were retro before you knew what retro was. Here is their slightly disturbing video for “It Will Never Be”. I’m not a freaking hipster I swear.
White Fence- It Will Never Be

Trap influenced rapper, DJ, and producer. Salva's music is perfect when you are overwhelmed with the desire to blast the most obnoxious stuff you can find on your playlist. Don’t let that description scare you off, its hard not to like. Here is his most popular track “Drop that B”, which grants the listener with some advice I should have taken several times.

7:00-8:00: Ximena Sariñana
29 year old actress and singer from Mexico City, Ximena Sariñana reminds me of a Spanish speaking Fiona Apple. With her smokey voice and stirring melodies shes sure to grab your attention. Despite my inability to understand her (I know, I’m sorry), her music has a hypnotic quality to it. Here is her video for “Mediocre” with lyrics so you can sing along!

8:00-9:00: Earl Sweatshirt
Discovered by Tyler, The Creator, 21 year old Thebe Neruda Kgositsile mirrors many of the qualities that made his mentor so popular. This stuff is dark, unsettling, and irresistible to listen to. I'd expect to hear a lot more from him in the coming years despite the fact that he has already made it. Here is a single “Chum” from his latest album.
Earl Sweatshirt- Chum https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FCbWLSZrZfw&list=PLwuWS5OAJKIn1WskFYvvx5ZrVFVLPMy_K
Another act featured on the GTA V soundtrack, synth-pop band Miami Horror visits us all the way from Melbourne, Australia. Their style draws heavily from the likes of Michael Jackson, Prince, and as strange as it may sound Pink Floyd. Here is a video for their single “Real Slow”, within 30 seconds of watching, I think you will get where I am coming from.
Miami Horror- Real Slow https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dDIJ-jqYulI
10:00-11:30: PARTYNEXTDOOR
Proclaimed as part of the emerging PBR&B (Pabst Blue Ribbon R&B, it's sold to hipsters) movement, PartyNextDoor has a lot to offer. The beats are a great combination of what makes EDM, Hip-Hop, and R&B attractive. This artist shares a lot of the qualities that make his collaborator and record producer Drake so popular. While I feel that several of you may be cringing as this review continues, its popular for a reason. Here is his single “Recognize- ft. Drake”.
PARTYNEXTDOOR – Recognize ft. Drake https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WsPfSXJaelk
11:00- 12:15: Passion Pit
Yet another group that needs absolutely no introduction. Passion Pit has been belting out intoxicatingly infectious hits since their debut in 2007. You have most likely heard them today once already. Here is their single “Lifted Up (1985)” from their latest album “Kindred”
Passion Pit- Lifted Up (1985) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YeINWQDg7zg
12:15-1:30: Flume
The following is going to be extremely biased. I bought tickets to this festival strictly due to the fact that I saw their name on the line up. I love Flume and have been listening to him almost daily for the past two years. Despite potentially being dismissed as run of the mill Electronica, his tracks have a quality that I feel is hard to find elsewhere, and its difficult to put into words. I’ve included 2 videos which I feel best showcase his talents. The first is a remix of “You and Me” by Disclosure, the second is a collaboration between himself and Chet Faker called “Drop the Game”. Enjoy.

Thanks for reading! Hopefully I have converted a few of you that were on the fence about attending. I'll be posting updates of our adventures over the weekend, and for those going to the festival I will see you there.
