Fan art etiquette - AI scams

As a fan fic author, getting fan art of my stories is genuinely the best thing in the world. It is so unbelievably flattering and humbling that my art and my takes on characters can inspire someone else to make art. If someone makes art of an ongoing fic, you can bet it will be included in the next chapter with direct artist acknowledgment and thanks.

This doesn't apply to AI slop.

If you for a second think I will be happy that my work has been fed into generative AI to create 'art' with no soul or creativity, you are very, very wrong. It is an insult to my work, the original media and creativity in general. If you send me this 'art' and then expect me to pay you, that is even worse, and unfortunately, it is a scam many authors are facing.

Unfortunately, I faced this exact situation very recently when someone who I believed was a fan of my writing reached out to send me 'line art' of my fic. When I received the picture, it was very clearly AI and not remotely resembling the characters I had poured so much of myself into. The individual proceeded to contact me continuously for months, requesting payment to 'complete the work'. This is an insulting and dangerous scam.

To my lovely fellow authors: be mindful of guest accounts asking to contact you, do not give anyone money, do not give them actual contact information (I do all fandom communication through Tumblr, never Email or social media). Stay safe!

I love fan artists; I hate AI. Simple as.
